Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is a public business school and Institute of National Importance located in Bangalore, India. Founded in 1973, it was the third IIM to be established, after IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad.[2]
IIMB is a globally ranked institute as per the QS World University Rankings and Financial Times Global MBA Rankings. It was ranked India's best B-School in the NIRF 2019 rankings[3]. It was also ranked as the best business school in Central Asia in 2019 by EdUniversal[4]. In the same year, it topped the Outlook ICARE Rankings for India's best management education institution[5].
The institute offers Post Graduate, Doctoral and Executive Education programmes. The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), a two-year, full-time residential MBA programme is the flagship programme, offered to candidates admitted through the highly competitive Common Admission Test.[6] IIM Bangalore offers the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP), a one year full time MBA programme for candidates admitted through GMAT [7]. IIMB also offers two year part time executve MBA programme for working executives [8] and a 2-year full time MBA programme in business analytics.[9]
In addition to its main academic programmes, IIMB is also engaged in facilitating research, offering consultant services, conducting seminars and academic conferences and publishing journals.
History
In 1972, a committee headed by Ravi J. Matthai, seeing the rising demand for graduates of the first two IIMs namely IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad, recommended the need to have two more IIMs. While the first two IIMs were oriented towards the private sector, it was decided that the new institutions shall be oriented towards public sector to cater to its growing needs of management graduates. The Institute at Bangalore was consequently set up next year, designed to cater exclusively to the needs of public sector enterprises.[10] For the proposed institute, the Government of Karnataka offered 100 acres (40 ha) of land free of cost and a contribution of ₹3 million (US$35,000). T. A. Pai and N. S. Ramaswamy were appointed as chairman and director respectively. The institute was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on 28 October 1973. The institute was started in St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and some other buildings, which were rented on the Langford Road. The new institute came up at Bannerghatta Road in South Bangalore.[11]
Motto
The motto derived from Sanskrit तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु (pronounced as tejasvi nāvadhītamastu) is an extract from the Shanti Mantra recited in Taittiriya Upanishad, Katha Upanishad, Mandukya Upanishad and Shvetashvatara Upanishad. The motto translates to Let our study be enlightening.[12]
Academics
Prior to 2018, IIM Bangalore awarded diplomas instead of degrees because IIMs were not set up as universities through an act of parliament but as societies under the Societies Act.[13] The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 enacted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in December 2017 declared IIMs as Institutes of National Importance, thereby allowing IIMs to award degrees to their students instead of diplomas.[13] Consequently, in 2018, IIM Bangalore became the first IIM to award MBA degree to the graduates of the Post Graduate Programme in Management.[13]
Degree Granting Programmes
IIM Bangalore offers five degree granting programmes: a doctoral programme, 3 MBA programmes, a programme in public policy and a programme in business analytics. [14]
The Doctoral programme is committed to training individuals who will excel in their area of research by publishing quality work of international standard. It promotes inter-disciplinary research in all areas of business management and public policy, including Decision Sciences, Economics & Social Sciences, Entrepreneurship, Finance & Accounting, Information Systems, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resources Management, Production & Operations Management, Public Policy, Strategy.[15]
The MBA degree is offered through three programme formats - the two year full-time programme (PGP), one year full-time programme (EPGP) and the two year weekend executive programme (PGPEM).
The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) has been the flagship two-year residential PGDM programme since the institute was founded. Now recognized as the two year full-time MBA of IIMB, the PGP programme is recognized globally as one of the top 'Master's in Management'. The two year full time MBA ranks amongst the global top 20 Masters in Management Programmes and listed alongside MIM from top B-Schools like HEC Paris. It is designed to equip students to take on leadership roles in an increasingly complex and dynamic global scenario. Admission to this programme is through the highly competitive CAT examination that scores a candidate on the bases of Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA) and Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR).[6]
A decade ago, IIMB started a one year full-time MBA programme (EPGP) for experienced candidates professionals, on the lines of global MBA programmes. The one year full-time MBA programme has climbed rapidly in global rankings and has catapulted IIM Bangalore to the position of a top 30 global B-school. Currently, the one year programme is ranked #27 amongst the top global full-time MBA programmes in the world, listed alongside MBA from top B-Schools like Harvard, Stanford, INSEAD and NUS. It is an intensive one-year residential programme created specifically for professionals with remarkable track records and 5 to 12 years of work experienced in a wide range of industries. The EPGP provides students with the same solid foundation in key management concepts and disciplines as a two-year MBA, with similar rigor, range of electives, and grading criteria and builds on the diverse work experience of the candidates. Admission to this programme is highly competitive and is based on globally followed norms of GMAT, essays and interviews. [7]
IIMB started its executive MBA programme in 1998 meant for working professional who wished to take up business education on a part time basis over the weekends. The Post Graduate Programme in Enterprise Management (PGPEM) is a two years part-time executive MBA programme of IIMB. The PGPEM is a weekend programme designed for working mid-level and senior executives with minimum of four years of work experience after graduation.[8]
