Janata curfew (transl. People's curfew) is an effort to combat coronavirus spread, introduced by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, in the wake of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in India.[1] The Prime Minister implored all citizens of India to observe a self-imposed 'curfew' from 7 am to 9 pm IST on Sunday, 22 March 2020 to help reduce community spreading of coronavirus disease in India.[2]

Action plan

The Janata curfew will happen for 14 hours on 22 March 2020. Everyone except essential services such as police, medical services, media, home delivery professionals and firefighters are needed to take part in the curfew. At 5 pm, all citizens are encouraged to stand at their doorways, balconies or windows, and clap their hands or ring their bells in appreciation for the professionals delivering essential services.[2] People belonging to National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme to enforce the curfew in the country.[3] The Prime Minister also urged the youth to inform 10 others about Janata curfew and encourage everyone to observe the curfew.[3]

However, while supporting the Prime Minister's Janata curfew call, K. Chandrashekar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana appealed to the people of Telangana to stay indoors from Sunday morning 6 a.m. to Monday morning 6 a.m. in order to contain the possible spread of coronavirus.[4]

Support by other Organizations or Unions

Some auto and taxi unions in Delhi have stated that they will not be providing service during the Janata curfew.[5]

Precautions and actions taken by states during curfew

Some states have taken further precautions like the shutdown of Metro Trains, Suburban trains, Buses, Trams and Monorail services.[6][7] Tamil Nadu will not allow visitors in jails during the Janata curfew, nor fishing is allowed.[8][6] Only employees that work for essential services are allowed to board local trains in Mumbai, and the rail service has been cut back by a lot causing cancellation of more then 3,700 trains, these actions will start when the curfew takes effect however will end on March 31st.[9][10][6]

Social Media Reaction

Some people in India have misunderstood the reason for the Janata curfew. Those people believe that observing the curfew will kill the coronavirus in those infected with it or that the government will distribute a cure to citizens during the curfew. Sadly, nether of those are true. Observing the curfew does however prevent more people getting infected because people staying at home by themselves cannot infect others.

The reaction to the Janata curfew on social media has caused to be a trending topic on some platforms worldwide. On Twitter, the hashtag #JantaCurfewMarch22 tagged many times that it was listed as one of the trending topics of the day in India and around the world.[11] Some famous people have taken to social media as well to spread the news of the Janata curfew.[7][12] A tweet by actor Rajanikanth claiming that a 14-hour stay at home can stop the coronavirus disease going from "stage 2" to "stage 3" was classified as misinformation and was taken down by Twitter for violating community guidelines.[13]

Misinformation that the government is spreading "anti-corona" drug in the country during Janata curfew went viral on social media.[14] Film actor Mohanlal and many others shared the fake news that, the vibration generated by clapping together during Janata curfew will kill the virus.[15] One viral message says that the lifetime of coronavirus is only 12 hours and staying home for 14 hours during Janata curfew break the chain of transmission.[16] Another message claimed that observing Janata curfew will result in the reduction of coronavirus cases by 40%.[16]
