MicroSurgical Endodontics is that aspect of endodontics which was developed after the introduction of the Surgical Operating Microscope (SOM) to endodontics in the early 1990's. The recent addition of SOM's to endodontic therapy can allow better visualization and management of the surgical field by endodontists and general dentists during endodontic procedures. Recent studies [1] have demonstrated higher success rates in surgical procedures using SOM's when compared to older techniques. However, they have a steep learning curve and require practice and patience to learn and master. Use of the surgical operating microscope routinely for all endodontic procedures is not considered the standard of care by the American Association of Endodontists.
