List of districts of Tamil Nadu
The South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, also India's southernmost state, is bordered by the Union territory of Puducherry, and the states of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. The state is divided into 38 districts.
History
After the Indian independence in August 1947, the former British province of Madras Presidency was renamed Madras State. Following states reorganizations in 1953 and 1956, the present state boundaries emerged. It was officially renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969. In 1956, Madras State was made up of 13 districts: Chingleput, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Madras, Madura, Nilgiris, North Arcot, Ramnad, Salem, South Arcot, Tanjore, Tinnevely and Trichinopoly. Since then, the districts have been divided as follows:
1961 - 1970
- 1966: Dharmapuri district was split from Salem district
- 1969: Madras State was renamed as Tamil Nadu
1971 - 1980
- In 1974, Pudukkottai district was formed from the parts of Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur districts.
- In 1979, Erode district was split from Coimbatore district.
1981 - 1990
- In 1985, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts were split from Ramanathapuram district.
- In 1985, Dindigul district was split from Madurai district.
- In 1986, Thoothukudi district was split from Tirunelveli district.
- In 1989, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts were split from North Arcot district (District ceased to exist).
1991 - 2000
- In 1991, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts were split from Thanjavur district.
- In 1993, Cuddalore and Viluppuram districts were split from South Arcot district (District ceased to exist).
- In 1995, Karur and Perambalur districts were split from Tiruchirappalli district.
- In 1996, Theni district was split from Madurai district.
- In 1997, Namakkal district was split from Salem district.
- In 1997, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts were split from Chingleput district (District ceased to exist).
2001 - 2010
- In 2004, Krishnagiri district was split from Dharmapuri district.
- In 2007, Ariyalur district was split from Perambalur district.
- In 2009, Tiruppur district was formed from the parts of Coimbatore and Erode districts.
2011 - 2020
- In 2019, Tenkasi district was split from Tirunelveli district.
- In 2019, Kallakurichi district was split from Viluppuram district.
- In 2019, Tirupattur and Ranipet districts were split from Vellore district.
- In 2019, Chengalpattu district was split from Kanchipuram district.
- In 2020, Mayiladuthurai district was split from Nagapattinam district.
Now Dindigul District is the Biggest District in Tamil Nadu in terms of Area
