First GP in US in 23 years (Daytona in 1965 was previous).

Rainey on pole. Through the hairpin it’s Gardner, Mackenzie, Rainey, Schwantz, et al.

Lawson down in 6th place, with Magee and Gardner up front. Lawson works his way through the field, and passes both Gardner and Magee on the inside of Turn 2 (hairpin).
