Ampère Seamount

Ampère Seamount is a seamount in the Atlantic Ocean, 410 km south-west of Portugal and 470km west of Morocco.

It is located at 35°02’N and 12°54’W, the nearest above-water rock is at 380 km southwest - Rocha do Nordeste also known nowadays as Ilhéu de Fora of Porto Santo Island of the Madeira archipelago. The closest point in Europe is at 410 km northeast - the Lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente, the most southwestern point of Portugal and of the mainland of Europe. The closest point in Africa is at 430 km east - the Pharo El Beddouza Morocco, at 630 km is Tangere and 650 km to Strait of Gibraltar. This seamount is about 90 x 40 km, it rises from ocean depths of about 4500 m well into the euphotic zone. The summit topograhy is rather disturbed with a summit plateau ~ 6 x 3 km in about 120 m and a peak reaching up to 55 m below the water surface.
