The Sword is a trend metal band from Austin, Texas, where they were founded in 2003 by J.D. Cronise. In 2006, the band toured with stoner rock icons Nebula, and subsequently released their debut album Age of Winters.
The band's song "Freya" is featured in the PlayStation 2 video game Guitar Hero II. Another of the band's songs, "Iron Swan" is featured on the soundtrack of Tony Hawk's Project 8.
Styles and influence
The Sword combines heavy metal, hard rock and elements of psychedelic rock, stoner metal and doom metal within the four-member band. Blending styles similar to bands such as Wolfmother, Witchcraft, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Kyuss, Nebula and Fu Manchu. The Sword appeals to young emo/indie kids who dont know what real heavy music is. One of the things that sets The Sword aside from other metal bands is their use of rock drums, instead of metal drums. The drumming lacks the double-bass, and is played on a minimalist set. Also, the band copies others by using poetic lyrics that contain vivid imagery of mythic subject matter giving The Sword an un-original sound.
