"With You" is a song by American DJ Kaskade and American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor, released on June 14, 2019, through Columbia Records.[1] The song was written by Robert Gerongco, Samuel Gerongco, Sarah Aarons, Finn Bjarnson, Richard Beynon, Ryan Raddon and Thomas Shaw, and produced by the latter four.

Background and promotion

About working with Meghan Trainor, Kaskade said that "when the opportunity came to work with her it was an easy yes for me. I knew we could put something together that would be fun, meaningful and above all, sticky enough that people can’t help but sing it after one listen".[2] While the former stated that "it was a dream come true".[2]

Kaskade announced the collaboration in a post to social media on June 10, 2019.[3] A snippet of the song was previewed a few days later.[4]

Composition and reception

Idolator's Mike Wass wrote that the electropop song finds Trainor "in a typically feisty mood as she lays down the law to a no-good boyfriend", adding that "by the time we reach the chorus, Meghan has had enough".[5] Bella Bagshaw of Dancing Astronaut opined that "Kaskade kicks his digestibility up a notch on" it, and that "the track's ricocheting synth line and fluttering, pitched-up vocal chops ensconce the track like celebratory glitter".[6]

"With You" reached number 15 on the China Airplay/Foreign Language chart.[7] In the US, the song peaked at number 22 on the Adult Top 40 chart,[8] and numbers 12 and 31 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and Mainstream Top 40 charts respectively.[9][10] It earned a number 46 placement on the Year-end Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, and additionally charted at number 7 on the weekly Venezuela Top Anglo chart.[11][12]

Promotion

Music videos

An accompanying animated video for "With You" was released on July 8, 2019. The visual sees Trainor and Kaskade explore a psychedelic outer space. It commences with a woman controlling a spaceship and crashing on rocky terrain which is populated by three-eyed cats. The former two have mystical superpowers, and Trainor can cast rainbows from her eyes, which grow trees, flowers and streams on the barren planet.[13] Kat Bein of Billboard described it as "a psychedelic trip through the single's bouncy synth rhythm", and the pair's characters as "colorful, extraterrestrial super friends" and "alien superheroes".[14] Entertainment Tonight Canada's Aynslee Darmon called it a "technicolor dream".[15]

Directed by Romeo Salazar and choreographed by Charm La'Donna, the official music video was released on August 15, 2019. Idolator's Mike Wass described the visuals as "striking" and "seriously fierce", adding that Trainor "serv[ed] slinky choreography and sexy looks" in the video.[16] Darmon wrote that Trainor looked like a "bejewelled goddess", as she was "blinged out and dancing around to the catchy tune".[17]

Live performance

Kaskade and Trainor performed "With You" for the first time, on Today, on September 13, 2019.[18]
