History

According to the Forman Family Papers in the Yale University Library,

Charles William Forman arrived in India in 1847 and two years later settled in Lahore in north India (now Pakistan). He was the founder of the Rang Mahal School in Lahore, the first English-speaking school in north India. This school added a college department in 1865, which was later known as Forman Christian College. Forman was very influential in developing the educational system of the Punjab area. He served on nearly every committee on education appointed by the Punjab government during his lifetime.

Dr. James C. R. Ewing (later Sir James) served as Principal of the college for thirty years, retiring in 1917.

In 1902, the college became the first institution of higher education in the Punjab province to admit women.

In 1972, the college was nationalized, as were other private colleges, by the avowedly socialist government of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. In 1987, after a prolonged legal struggle, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled that the seizure was illegal. The college is now considered to be in the private sector.

In 2003, other legal claims to the college or its property were eventually defeated and the control of Forman Christian College was transferred to the Presbyterian Church (USA). The responsibility for the financial and administrative management of the college was entrusted to the FCC Board of Governors, whose members are nominated by various Christian communities in Pakistan. Dr. Peter Armacost, President Emeritus of Eckerd College in Florida, assumed the office of Principal of Forman Christian College on March 20, 2003. The FCC Board of Governors plans to revamp the method of instruction on campus and develop a four-year degree program that meets U.S. accreditation standards.

In September of 2004, Punjab Province granted full university status to Forman Christian College. [1] The name of the institution remains unchanged.
