Yip Sai Wing (Chinese: 葉世榮; Jyutping: Yip9 Sai3-wing4; born 19 August 1963) is a Hong Kong musician and best known for being the drummer in the rock band Beyond, where frontman Wong Ka Kui and he were the founders and rooted members.
Life and career
Early years and Beyond
Yip was born in British Hong Kong, on 19 August 1963, and his ancestry is Taishan, Guangdong. He was exposed to British rock music when in secondary school and began to learn to play drums with friends. After graduation from New Method College, he started working as an insurance agent. One day he knew Wong Ka Kui in the piano company. They shared their passion for David Bowie music, keeping in contact with each other from then on. In 1983, they formed the band Beyond to participate in a band contest with guitarist William Tang (鄧煒謙) and bass guitarist Lee Wing Chiu (李榮潮).
Following a few changes of the band's lineup, Ka Kui's younger brother Ka Keung replaced Lee on bass and Paul Wong replaced Tang, completing the band's final lineup. Afterwards manager Leslie Chan (陳健添) showed his appreciation for the band and had them changed to popular images. Although Lau Chi Yuen (劉志遠) joined Beyond in 1986 to play guitar, he had stayed in the band merely until 1988.
Yip was in charge of financial affairs for Beyond. For the band's sake, he once lied to his parents that he needed a flat of their estates for his future family. As a matter of fact, he hoped the flat became their domain to write music and rehearse for shows. The flat was called "The Second Floor (二樓後座)".
He focused on drumming and background vocals, seldom singing lead vocals on Beyond tracks. Since Wong Ka Kui died in the accident in 1993, the quantity of songs which feature his solo vocals had increased. The examples of his compositions include "Alright, Alright (無事無事)", "Adore (崇拜)" and "Helpless (無助)", "Helpless" gained a lot of praises from their fans.
Solo career
In late 1999, Beyond announced their disbandment in order to launch their solo careers. Yip formed the band with William Tang to make his debut solo album. He often played shows as a drummer in various countries. From then on, he started to aim at the market in Mainland China and in 2004 established the company for producers and managers called Dayang Chuangyi (大洋創藝).
In 2006, he signed the contract with Feile Records (飛樂唱片), a Chinese record company, switching his main workplace to the Mainland.
Family
Yip's previous girlfriend was Cynthia Hui meeting each other in 1995. On 1 October 2002, Hui died suddenly in their apartment for cohabitation while taking a shower or a bath, at the age of 28. He held a ceremony for their nuptial marriage. He made the song "Remember You" to mourn for his deceased wife when 1st anniversary of her death had came. The song "Wind, Rain (風雨)" from the album The Leaf Gets Red (葉子紅了) originates from his wife's demo.
On 27 December 2011, Yip got married to Zhang Weiling who is 22 year old younger than him, but neither Paul Wong nor Wong Ka Keung attended their wedding ceremony.
