The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the Map workshop. Anyone can make a request for a map to be created or improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.
You are encouraged to share information and request advice from others. Also see possible conventions toolbox, map tutorials and topographic map tutorials.

Advice to requesters
What do we do?
  • Sourced requests: If possible, please try to provide a reliable source to create a map. This includes a map already on Wikipedia with a reliable source or an external link.
  • Please check: Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • Direct collaboration: Some mapmakers are especially interested by one topic area. If you notice a mapmaker fitting your needs, consider asking on their personal talk page to request maps.
  • {{Reqmap}}: To request a map, you can also tag the talk page of the article in need of a map with or {{Reqmapin|Australia}} (articles then appear in Category:Wikipedia requested maps)
If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

Independence from Britain

Article(s)
List of countries that have gained independence from the United Kingdom
Request
Okay, I've noticed a few inaccuracies with the above-left map that should probably be fixed:

1) The flag of the Dominican Republic is incorrectly shown for Dominica (above-centre), a completely different country.

2) Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence in 1979, not 1931.

3) There's no arrows linking the flags of Myanmar and Sudan to their respective countries.

4) The flag of Malta is wrongly shown to be linked to the Balearic Islands, not at Malta itself.

5) Nauru gained independence in 1968, not 1957.

6) The Maldives gained independence in 1965, not 1982.

7) The flags of Tonga and Tuvalu are actually shown pointing to Fiji, and the flag of Fiji itself is linked to Vanuatu (the actual locations of said countries are provided on the above-right map).

8) The flag of Qatar is wrongly shown to be linked to the United Arab Emirates, not at Qatar itself.

9) The flag of Jordan seems to be pointing more at the West Bank than at Jordan itself.

10) Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia in 1975, not Britain, hence it should be removed from the map (otherwise you'd have to include all other countries that gained independence from former British holdings, such as Namibia, Bangladesh, South Sudan, etc.).

Improvements to IATSE District map

Article(s)

I could use some help fixing up this District map for an entertainment industry union. There are two main issues I see:
* Color scheme - there are 13 districts, so finding colors that are unique but not irritating is difficult. It feels corny right now.
* Labeling - Having the key on the left doesn't look good, but i couldn't find a way to place the number directly over the districts without smothering and hiding some smaller states. The labeling style also doesn't feel right, and it would be great to make it consistent with the rest of wikipedia.
I'm willing to try and do some of these changes given the right guidance. Is there a cleaner way to represent this? Thanks! -- Strangerpete (talk) 18:37, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I hacked away at a new version, modifying the colors slightly from Area maps, and using the legend template. I think its better, but not sure if the large font is acceptable; any feedback is appreciated -- Strangerpete (talk) 15:37, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nepal had political map change in Indian controlled area. Add in light green the disputed area to the Nepal map. The color light green should be similar to India's orthographic projection see here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:India_(orthographic_projection).svg . Manabimasu you appear to have already updated the map yourself. Is there anything further that needs doing? CMD (talk) 10:31, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Chipmunkdavis: I tried myself but the claimed area looks a bit too big. I didn't use GMT when I used inkscape so the claimed area was more of a freehand. If anyone can fix it or show me a tutorial on using GMT with Inkscape then the map can be properly done.Manabimasu (talk) 14:42, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Specific map of the recent India-Nepal dispute

Description of the image
Article(s)
Territorial disputes of India and Nepal, Kuthi Valley, Kalapani territory
Request
A map is needed to show the claims of Nepal over some parts of Indian-controlled territory. There are two separate but neighbouring claimed areas, the Kuthi valley and Kalapani. An external example showing the differences between the two territories would be this Nepali times map. However, that map is not 100% correct, see this official Nepal map which includes the disputed territory in the top left (although it doesn't distinguish from undisputed territory). One difference is that the official map has a little hook in the top-left not present on the Nepali times map. The Kalapani territory article also has an open street map link which has the disputed borders coloured in orange, and clearly shows the river which divides the two claimed areas. I think a map showing the area somewhere between what is visible on the 5km and 10km open map scales would be the best, but I don't know of a good base map for the area already on Wikipedia. At that scale the map would include 5 areas: China, rump India, rump Nepal, the Kuthi valley, and Kalapani. Thanks to anyone who can take a look at this. -- CMD (talk) 10:56, 24 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update Kansas City Metro map

Article(s)
Kansas City Metropolitan Area in multiple languages
Request
In light of the 2020 census and the most recent delineation files the map for the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area is out of date. It only needs a small change, Franklin County, Kansas was removed from the metro area in 2013 as you can read on that page. Any touch up to the borders of Kansas City, Missouri is optional, but appreciated. The Kansas City GIS has the most recent city limits Thanks! -- Grey Wanderer (talk) 06:28, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This map cycles through a number of years, showing border changes in each year. In 1825, there's a reference to "Van Diemens Land" in the large letters saying what happened, although the correct "Van Diemen's Land" appears next to the location in question. Could you change "Diemens" to "Diemen's"? Thanks! Nyttend backup (talk) 12:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Democracy map

Article(s)
Democracy Index and pages on dozens of other wikis
Request
Could you replace the current colour scheme with one in which the scale just goes from darkest to lightest, or lightest to darkest? The current Democracy Index rankings put Australia and the DR Congo at opposite ends of the scale, but to my somewhat colourblind eyes, they're virtually identical. Because this is used by more than fifty wikis, and because they may include captions indicating colours (this is the case at Democracy Index, for example), changing colours could mess up tons of captions, so please upload under a new filename. Nyttend backup (talk) 17:03, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PS, both on this map and the new upload, could you give French Guiana the same colour as metropolitan France? Right now it has the no-information-available colour. For some circumstances it makes sense to distinguish between them, but not here. Nyttend backup (talk) 17:06, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

I suspect French Guiana was left blank because it is blank in some Economist maps (eg.). However, it is coloured in other Economist maps (interactive). The other DOMS should similarly be filled in. CMD (talk) 07:16, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed RE: color issue. A better colormap would be a sequential one. I created a draft of this map but need to bin the colors. Note that the data table color (Table #1) would need to be changed also to reflect a new colormap. Moderngraphite (talk) 15:15, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the above maps could do with a few updates, in accordance with the changes brought about by the Irish Local Government Reform Act 2014, including:

1) The removal of the former border between North Tipperary and South Tipperary, which were merged into a single entity of County Tipperary under the Act.

2) The removal of the former border of the Limerick City Council area, which the Act merged with the area covered by Limerick County Council to form a single entity under the name of Limerick City and County Council.

3) The removal of the former border of the Waterford City Council area, which was merged with the area covered by Waterford County Council in order to form a single entity under the name of Waterford City and County Council under the Act.
