Pimcore is an open-source enterprise PHP software platform for product information management (PIM), master data management (MDM), customer data management (CDP), digital asset management (DAM), content management (CMS), and digital commerce.
The Community Edition of the Pimcore Platform is freely available under the GNU General Public License. The company also offers a commercial version of the software, called Pimcore Enterprise Subscription, which includes a proprietary license and commercial support for the product. The commercial version extends the capabilities of the open-source core with additional features.
History
Pimcore was originally developed by the digital agency elements.at New Media Solutions GmbH. The first public beta version was released on January 21, 2010. In 2013, the company Pimcore GmbH was founded. In 2015, Pimcore launched a global partnership program for system integrators and digital agencies. It has partners in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
Pimcore follows the guidelines and definitions of the PHP Framework Interop Group (PSR 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7). The company has been a member of this PHP standardization body since August 2016. In 2018, Pimcore received $3.5 million in Series A funding by German Auctus Capital.[1]
Technology
Pimcore makes heavy use of existing open-source projects as part of the platform. It is a web-based application and uses the PHP programming language and the MySQL/MariaDB relational database management system. The core application is extensible through plugins, and by utilizing APIs.Pimcore includes an administrative back-end interface for system configuration and managing data. It makes use of the following components:[2]
- Symfony, a web application framework
- PHPUnit, a unit testing framework
- Twig, a templating engine
- Swift Mailer, an e-mail library
- Composer, a package manager
- Ext JS, a JavaScript single-page application framework
Features
Since Pimcore is based on the complete Symfony Full Stack Framework, developers can integrate any Symfony extension (i.e. bundle) into Pimcore to add more functionality. Pimcore adds features such as:
- A graphical data modeling tool for creating object classes and interfaces for data management
- A user interface to manage hierarchies, structure, validations, classification, syndication, and for enriching master data with attributes, descriptions, and other related data
- A content management system with multilingual capabilities, versioning, scheduling, behavioral targeting, and personalization
- A digital asset management module for tagging and sharing digital media assets such as images, videos, and documents
- A digital commerce framework including order management, search, checkout, and payment provider integrations for creating B2B and B2C e-commerce applications
- A customer data framework for rapidly developing applications for customer data management, customer data segmentation, personalization, and marketing automation
- REST and GraphQL[4] APIs for interacting with the data and content using JavaScript or other clients and for exporting and importing data in formats such as JSON or XML
- User and permission management to control access into the platform
- Integrated Elasticsearch search engine for performance and search features
Usage
- Northgate Markets, a retailer with more than 40 locations in the US, developed an end-to-end ordering system an overhauled its website with Pimcore [5]
- BlueLine Rental, a subsidiary of United Rentals, developed a PIM, DAM, CMS, Order Management and eCommerce solution with Pimcore [6]
- Alshaya, a Kuwait based international franchise operator, implemented a PIM and DAM to manage data for 1.8 million products[7]
- Itsme, a distribution company, manages 7 million products with Pimcore [8]
- AUDI built a B2B commerce portal with Pimcore to ensure its brand consistency [9]
