WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  • England Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, Denmark MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Regarding your signature

Hello, it's rather difficult to see your signature. It might just be me, but the light green and the shadow make it tough. Would you mind changing it? Don't want to appear intrusive or anything, Thanks, Thanoscar21talk, contribs 22:05, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Thanoscar21: Yeah, I apologize regarding the signature, would changing the colors help? Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 22:36, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
red? Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 22:39, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Geekpotato24, anything really would help - check some of the colours recommended at MOS:ONWHITE. Ed6767 talk! 20:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Came here for the same reason - Lime green on white is a surefire way to trigger my migraines. Have a read of WP:SIGAPP, MOS:COLOUR and MOS:ONWHITE. Cheers. -- a they/them | argue | contribs 19:48, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thanoscar21 and Alfie: Is this better? Again, I apologize for the incovenience. Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 20:15, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Close, but no cigar - your talkpage link is still primary green. -- a they/them | argue | contribs 20:32, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Switched to dark green which meets MOS:ONWHITE qualifications. Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 20:36, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Flawless, thanks! -- a they/them | argue | contribs 20:40, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, it's great! Thanoscar21talk, contribs 23:08, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry!

To anyone who might be coming to my talk page for the reason that I violated WP:3RR, sorry, I got confused then reverted myself several times. Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 20:53, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Emily Carr House

Hi, you just reversed the edits that I made on the Emily Carr house page. I made the edits because I am the new site manager. You can verify this by going to google maps. You will see that the new website I put in the wikipedia page is the new website that is connected to the business page and is my website. Do I need an account to make changes without it getting reverted?

NEW The website that's there right now is no longer the website that's associated with the location. In fact, it leads to nothing. There's no conflict of interest because I am now the number one authority on Emily Carr house. I was simply trying to remove information that's irrelevant and no longer represents the location.

@2001:569:BD7C:2500:58AB:E885:3C:3E58:Are you talking about the website in external links? I tried it and it works perfectly. https://www.emilycarr.com/ Even if you are the number one authority on the house, please provide reliable sources. Usage of "dead position"

Thanks for reverting this edit! The revert is a bit a coincidence; in fact, it is wrong to speak of "dead position" here, I only realized afterwards. "Dead position" meaning both players have no mate, but here the focus is on one player having a mate with the help of the other. So in that respect, thanks! I have observed that different pages phrase the same condition with different words. Like "when there is no possibility of checkmate for either side with any series of legal moves" on rules of chess, or "as long as the player has a theoretical possibility to checkmate the opponent" and "and the opponent has no theoretical possibility to checkmate the player" on chess. I find this all confusing; then I would prefer quoting the rules all the time. For this reason, I made the edit using "dead position", for not writing this in different variations. This seemed promising, but I fell into the trap of using the wrong term. Dlbbld (talk) 23:44, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DlbbldI reverted it because some casual readers may not understand the term, try not to use technical terms but rather explain them. I didn't realize you used the term in a incorrect way so thanks for explaining. Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 23:56, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I understand and agree that an explanation should not be technical. However, there is also a problem when a comment is unusually long, like "When a player runs out of time, and his opponent claims it, and he himself did not run out of time, and he still has a theoretical possibility of checkmating the opponent, then it's a draw; otherwise it's a win". I am trying to work around such long descriptions, which are mindboggling, so let's see if there is something else to address this. Dlbbld (talk) 08:35, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
dlbbld Yeah, in those scenarios, link to the chess glossary.Geekpotato24 (talk to me!) 15:28, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RedWarn 15 trip-up on Squirrel and Hedgehog

I got tripped up by RedWarn 15 just now, I'm just posting here 'cause I wouldn't like to get IP banned for "vandalism", heh. Anyway, the edit was on the article about the Korean series Squirrel and Hedgehog, regarding the page's usage of the term "manga", which is actually a Japanese term. The correct term for a Korean manga is "manhwa", which was what I was trying to fix. Anyway, RedWarn probably detected it as vandalism because I made more than one edit about it (because, for some reason, I kept misspelling it as "manwha"). So, I'm just giving you a heads up about this. Thanks, and good luck with RedWarn! 190.193.171.57 (talk) 22:26, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Review

CompassOwl, you are literally the only person I have encountered that has shown an ounce of kindness or has tried to help me since I started, and I appreciate it!!!! Could you please look at the page Conservation CATalyst and edit/ let me know what needs to be revised? I put the page under construction (I was not aware that was an option before). I am sure you are busy but would greatly appreciate your expertise and recommendations so I may improve. Thank you for your time and consideration.ALLBN (talk) 17:16, 31 July 2020 (UTC) ALLBN[reply]

@ALLBN: I would advise you not to put it in WP:Sandbox because the page is cleared regularly and may be vandalized. Instead move it to draft:Conservation CATalyst. I would be glad to help. Cheers, CompassOwl (talk to me!) 17:34, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CompassOwl is not retired from Wikipedia, but he is affected by a ip adress hard block. He will be back as soon as he gets the ip block exempt flag. He put the template there as an just-in-case. ~~Snom2008 Snom2008 (talk) 23:02, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

IP block exemption granted

I have granted your account an IP block exemption for a period of six months. This will allow you to bypass hard IP blocks that are affecting your account. When it comes close to the time that the exemption period expires, you may contact me or checkuser-en-wp@wikipedia.org to apply for an extension. Mz7 (talk) 18:30, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email.
