Texas Christian University features 18 varsity sports teams. The school's mascot is the Horned Frog and it's women's athletics teams are referred to often as the Lady Frogs. They participate in the NCAA's Division I and in the Div I-Bowl Sub-Division for football competing in the Mountain West Conference. The University's current athletic director is Dr. Daniel Morrison.

Varsity sports

Texas Christian University began its athletic life as an independent program with a six year (1914-1920) stint in the Texas Intercolligiate Athletic Association interjected before eventually joining it's long time home, the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWC), in 1923. TCU remained a member of the SWC until it disbanded after the 1994-1995 academic year due to Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor defecting to the Big 8 Conference to form the Big 12 Conference. An earlier defection in 1992 by Arkansas to the Southeastern Conference also helped destroy the former SWC. The Horned Frogs no longer having a conference to call home after 72 years, joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), along with SMU and Rice. TCU called the WAC home from 1996 through 2000. In 2001, TCU joined Conference USA (CUSA) and remained there through 2004. TCU joined its current home of the Mountain West Conference (MWC) in 2005.

Rivalries

University of Arkansas

Arkansas leads the football series dating back to 1920, 43-23-2. The two schools played regularly until Arkansas left the Southwest Conference to join the Southeastern Conference in 1992. They are scheduled to pick up this series again with a game in both 2008 and 2009. Last meeting: 1991 Arkansas 22 - TCU 21

Baylor University

Baylor leads the football series 49-48-7. This rivalry harkens back to 1899 in the early days of TCU football when TCU was know as AddRan Christian University. When the series started TCU and Baylor were both located in Waco, Texas. It is one of the most played rivalries in all of NCAA College Football. The two schools are scheduled to conclude a home-and-home series in 2007, with another home-and-home to be held in 2010 and 2011. Last meeting: 2006 TCU 17 - Baylor 7

University of Houston

Houston leads the football series dating back to 1976, 13-11-0. While Houston won 9 of the first 12 meetings, TCU has won 8 of the last 12 including the last 7 straight. Houston was the one school that was left behind in the breakup of the Southwest Conference that didn't move to the Western Athletic Conference to continue it's SWC rivalries, opting instead to join Conference USA where it and TCU reunited in the 2001 season. It was thought that the 4 SWC schools left behind in 1996 would be reuinted in the western division of the lastest incarnation of Conference USA starting in 2005, however, TCU was invited to and joined the Mountain West Conference after SMU and Rice accepted their invitations to CUSA. This once again left at least one of the schools, in this cast TCU, away from the other three, Houston, Rice and SMU. Last meeting: 2004 TCU 34 - Houston 27

Rice University

TCU leads the football series dating back to 1914, 41-35-3. The two institutions shared a common bond as a fellow private institutions in the now legendary former Southwest Conference. As of now there is no plan to renew the football rivalry. Last meeting: 2000 TCU (10-2) 37 - Rice (3-8) 0

Southern Methodist University

TCU leads the football series 40-39-7. Since 1915 when SMU was founded and subsequently started playing football there have been only three seasons that the two schools didn't meet on the football field (1919, 1920 and 2006) and in which both universities fielded a football team. The schools are scheduled to meet again starting in 2007 through at least 2010. Last meeting: 2005 SMU 21 - TCU 10 (TCU's only loss of the 2005 season.)

University of Texas

Texas leads the football series dating back to 1897, 60-20-1. TCU has only won 4 of the last 35 matchups with the last occuring in 1992. The two schools are scheduled renew this rivalry for the first time since the breakup of the Southwest Conference, with only one future game scheduled when TCU visits Austin in 2007. Last meeting: 1995 Texas 27 - TCU 19

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M leads the football series also dating back to 1897, 56-29-7. Texas A&M was the first of the 4 schools that left the Southwest Conference to form the Bix 12 Conference to play TCU but not because of any agreement between the two schools. They met in a 2001 matchup in the galleryfurniture.com Houston Bowl and their is no current plan to renew this rivalry. TCU has lost the last 24 contests between the two schools with TCU's last win coming in 1973. Last meeting: 2001 Texas A&M 28 - TCU 9

Texas Tech University

Texas Tech leads the football series dating back to 1926, 28-23-3. Texas Tech was the first of the 4 Southwest Conference schools that left to form the Big 12 Conference to schedule a game with TCU in the regular season in 2004. The two schools are next scheduled to meet in the 2009-2010 seasons. Last meeting: 2006 TCU 12 - Texas Tech 3
