History

Prior to the creation of Rockstar India, Rockstar Games had collaborated with Technicolor India, the Bangalore-based studio of Technicolor SA, on various games, including Red Dead Redemption (2010), L.A. Noire (2011), and Max Payne 3 (2012).[1] In October 2012, Technicolor and Rockstar Games announced the opening of the "Rockstar Dedicated Unit" within Technicolor India, which was to size around 80–90 people and work solely on games published by Rockstar Games.[2][3]

Rockstar India was established as a subsidiary studio for Rockstar Games in Bangalore around August 2016.[4] Rockstar India was part of the development team on Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released in October 2018.[5] In May 2019, Rockstar announced that it had agreed to acquire a majority holding in Dhruva Interactive, the oldest game developer in India, from Starbreeze Studios.[6] Dhruva's team was to be integrated into Rockstar India.[6] At the time, Rockstar India had approximately 500 employees led by Daniel Smith as studio director.[6] The acquisition of Dhruva closed on 22 May.[7]
