American placenames in Europe

[edit]
  1. Longyearbyen
  2. Maine St, Manchester, England

Note that the many Californias in Europe cannot all be attributed to American influence, because the name originated in Spain. However, at least some are likely to derive from the American California. There is also a Kalifornien in northern Germany, near a place named Brasilien. Both are likely borrowings from the Americas but do not seem to be official names of populated places.

Possibly Florida in Bergen, Norway.

Native American placenames outside the Americas

[edit]

Philippines

[edit]
  1. Mexico, Philippines
  2. Tabaco, Philippines — from the Spanish word for tobacco, which may derive from a Native American word or from Arabic

European-origin placenames in Asia

[edit]

This excludes Russian placenames found in nations bordering Russia.

  1. Trump village, Israel
  2. Abbottabad, Pakistan
  3. Jacobabad, Pakistan
  4. Jamesabad, Pakistan
  5. Lawrencepur, Pakistan
  6. Warburton, Pakistan
  7. Bougainville
  8. Glenmore, Banyuwangi, Indonesia
  9. Kennedy Town in Hong Kong seems to be the only English-language placename in China that does not have a Chinese alternative with a semantically different meaning.

English-speaking countries:

  1. Wellington,_Tamil_Nadu, India

Sri Lanka has many listed at List of locations in Sri Lanka with a British name but few seem to be towns. Colombo is not named after Columbus. Cambodia is not named after the ancient Roman town of Cambodunum.

List_of_Philippine_city_name_etymologies, List_of_Philippine_place_names_of_English_origin, etc show so many more that I'm just going to post the link and leave it at that. (But Mexico gets its own entry because it comes not from Spanish, but from Nahuatl.)

others:

  1. Port Arthur, China (historical)
  1. Mali_London, Serbia
  1. BIllings, Russia
