History
Natural Gas dominated as the primary fuel source in the early decades of Bangladesh. The first Hydrocarbon exploration in East Bengal took place in 1911 by Burmah Oil Company[3], and the exploration ranged from Surma Basin[4] to Chittagong Hill tracts, and the first Gas reserve was discovered in 1955[5]. The use of Natural Gas in industrial sectors began in Bangladesh in 1955. In 1968. The piped Natural Gas connection was introduced to households of Bangladesh.[5]
The Current picture of Natural gas production in Bangladesh is a downslope in the curve. 56% of household demands in Bangladesh are still being complemented by natural gas through piped gas connections. However, with 23 Operational Gas fields, the gap between productions to supply and demand is widening every year, [5]which led the Government of Bangladesh to put suspension over the piped natural gas connection to households in 2009 till now.[6]
