The Marāthās is a collective term referring to an Indo-Aryan group of Hindu, Marathi-speaking castes of warriors and peasants, hailing mostly from the Indian state of Maharashtra. They created the Maratha Empire which covered a major part of India in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Marathas constituted an extensive and eclectic class of warriors and peasants. Their clan structure may therefore be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists and historians. Several lists and taxonomies of the Maratha clan structure are available. One such version is presented here.

Origin of clan system

The main clans and their sub-clans or lines tended to differ from time to time, and by book to book. Some clans lost their glory and kingdom while others gained prominence.

Past political conditions were harsh and chaotic. Name changes occurred for many reason. People changed their name to shield themselves from military conflicts, or from religious, political, caste-wise persecution and discrimination. Others did so to hide from a criminal past. Some people chose to go underground, or migrated to a different region and changed their name in the process. Evidence suggests [citation needed] that some people or an entire clan changed their name but did not change their caste when they migrated to new region or came a under government. It is difficult process to identify and prepare clans lines that are completely correct and some Maratha surnames and clans are missing from this list.

The list in this article was created by the great sage Vyasa rishi with the help of other rishis such as Vamdev, Shuk and others. They established that the Great Maratha clans are descendants of all 56 Royal Houses of India. According to Arya, the Hindu religion in India was divided into 56 sub nations. The Mahabharata war was destructive and left these nations in general disarray. [citation needed]This was the start of the Kaliyuga (sinful terrible age in Hinduism). In order to keep the religion alive, the rishis linked the Kshytriyas, warriors, and Royal houses with a strong bond by creating the Maratha Clan System from the 56 Royal houses of India.

Apart from the Marathas, a well defined clan system is also found among the Rajputs, Scots, Germanic Tribes and Iranians. All these groups belong to the Indo- Aryan population.[citation needed] The cognate of clan is Kul or cul, cognate of kshatriya is shah(Iranian), Shah-nav(Maratha), satrap(European). There exist a lot of similarities between the names and social customs of these clans during the ancient times e.g. Royal Insignia, Worship of the Fig tree, Code of valour and the art of fortification. It seems that before the compilation of the Rigveda, these clans scattered in different directions from their homeland. In general, all these clans have got a history of chivalry and have enriched their respective country's history. It is a matter of research for sociologists as to why even after changing their religions these clans did not change their clan system.

Birth of the certain clans

Following legend throws some light on origin of certain clans. It is interesting to compare it with the famous Norse Saga Norse saga.

When there was no plough to earth, bad signs were hanging on the tree and eighteen demon dogs were attached to the tree then there was no king to the earth. Gods and Sage’s (rishi) came together and had a talk that to perform Yadnya (a Hindu religion fire ritual) so that from the Yadnya’s holy fire (Homa) a statue will born and he will became the king as so gods and rishi made the future . Then they brought sandalwood (Chandankashtha) and Belkashtha (Wood of bilva or wood apple (Aegle marmelos)) and began the Yadnya. In those days horses use to have wings. Horses showed the future and began to say that he who will ride (sit) on horse will become the king, so as the divine statue born from the Yadnya’s holy fire sat on the horse and went out of the Yadnya, soon after the Gods and Rishi demolish the Yadnya and went away. As so there was great outcry (Aakant). Afterwards Shree Sadashiv (God Shankar ) came and calm down the Sage (rishi), and brought back the group of Sage (Rishi) and again proceed the Yadnya. All gods made a dog from their sweat dust and kept the dog to protect the Yadnya, the dog made very great barking. That dog barking was so enormous, great that from that holy fire like barking (Homa) gave birth to second divine statue, the statue had four hands, in one hand had a plough and in other hand had Musal (big wooden club), third hand had Dhanushya (bow) and fourth hand had Khadag (big axe), so like that the statue was born with grate, divine fire (Homa). Nobody could stand, bare his divine light, fire so Shankar with Mantra sprinkled divine water from his pot and had edge around. From that edge grate edge like Darraw Pawar was born, and he stood as so that in his hand he had Khadag (big axe), then after Suva was born. Khandagale was also born in the Khadag (big axe) plough hand. Like that Chandralabh was also born. Lord Shankar made a divine fire round and from it Kawda was born. Chavan made Pawar as prime minister and told him that have an arrow to his bow and cut the wings of horse. Pawar obey the order and cut the wings, from it was bleeding. From that bleeding Pawar made his sign and then after the earth had a king. So the earth was ploughed and then Lord Shankar sprinkled divine water and ends the Yadnya. When the divine water was sprinkled from it Nikam was born. When found Kardam, Kadam was born, Vigal was born where Vigal found, as like this is expansion of divine fire (Homa) born statue.

Historic role

Historically Maratha clans played a major role in preserving Indian culture and religion.[citation needed] India, like China, is a civilisation which is almost unbroken as no invader was able to wipe out indigenous Kshatriya clans. As a result a foreign culture could not be imposed, save for a few minor pockets which ultimately broke from India and formed new nations. The Marathas are either founders or descendants of the following list of empires.
