The Future Bites (stylised as THE FUTURE BITES™) is the upcoming sixth studio album by British musician Steven Wilson. The album was initially set for release on 12 June 2020 through Caroline International,[1] but later was pushed back to 29 January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the marketing and production related to the album.[2] It was co-produced by Wilson and David Kosten and recorded in London.[3] Wilson announced the album on 12 March 2020,[4] also sharing the lead single "Personal Shopper", inspired by Olivier Assayas' 2016 film of the same name starring Kristen Stewart, which Wilson noted was his favourite film that he saw in 2018.[5]

Background and themes

The record deals with "two recurring themes" of Wilson's musical output, identity and technology, with a press release noting that it "picks apart our 21st century utopia, while also allowing for moments of personal growth and optimism".[6] It was also called "less a bleak vision of an approaching dystopia, more a curious reading of the here and now", and "Personal Shopper" was noted to expand on the electronic elements of Wilson's previous work, "fully diving into dance and neo-disco while somehow keeping a rock edge".[7]

Marketing and promotion

The lyrics of Personal Shopper, a song about consumerism, seem contrary to limited edition items and box sets: "Buy the box set and the kind of stuff you've bought before a million times. / Buy in green, buy in blue. Buy in patterns 'cause I tell you to"[8]. Ironically, it will be available to purchase an alternative red version of the vinyl[9] and a limited edition deluxe box set of the album, which contains "high concept packaging including multiple inserts", the original cd and the instrumentals, 6 additional songs, and 4 extended remix versions of songs from the album, including a 19-minute extended version of Personal Shopper, a blu-ray disk with videos for Personal Shopper, Eminent Sleaze and King Ghost and all the tracks in high resolution stereo 5.1 surround sound, plus a cassette with 4 exclusive demo versions[10].

As part of the album's concept, on the official store of the artist, there are also some fake sold-out products with creative descriptions.[11]

The official website contains an organigram with eight people (one of them is the woman on the Personal Shopper single cover art: Susannah Griffin, corporate resonance liaison[12]) and shows quotes (called "deluxe inspirational sentiment"[13]), which change when the user refreshes the page and which are linked to the topics of the project.

Track listing

Note that initial announcements featured a slightly different track listing with "Man Of The People" and "Personal Shopper" swapping places and "Anyone But Me" being the final track.[14]
