Gorgama is a small village in Samastipur District, Bihar, India, near Shahpur Patori. The village is surrounded by the Baya River on both the Northern and Western sides. With a population of approximately 1,800 people consisting mainly of Bhumihars, residents of the village are primarily dependent on agriculture. Both Scheduled Caste (SC) and Muslim people live on the Western side of the village. Settlers, who are often poor or experiencing some level of poverty, are driven to migrate to bigger cities with greater opportunities such as Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata in order to find better opportunities and support themselves and their families.[2]
Gorgama village is known as the home of local wrestling legend locally known as 'Jila Keshri'. 'Jila Keshri' gained notoriety throughout the 1990s as a wrestler, putting Gorgama on the map across the greater region.
Gorgama has two primary schools: 'Rajkiya Kanya Madhya Vidyalaya, Gorgama' and 'Rajkiya Sankul Pradhmik Vidyala, Gorgama'. Both schools are close one from another and can be found on the Northern side of Baya (riverside).
In other areas of the village, adjacent of the Baya River, there is a large open field known as 'Kochar' which is approximately the size of a football field. This is Gair Majarua land owned by the Bihar Government and is commonly used by locals for activities such as festivals.
Fish farming is the main occupation for those working across Western regions of the Baya River. This can be noted by the presence of artificial ponds within the region. Other key agricultural drivers within the village includes the harvest of crops such as maize, tobacco, wheat, pulses, and other vegetables. Breeding animals like goats and cows, is also a common occupation in the village. This occupation helps increasing peoples income as well as using animals residues for crops as natural fertilizer.
In October 2019, a 25.5 dhur(2422 sq-ft) mosque opened to the village. The mosque, also known in Arabic terms as a 'masjid' (meaning, 'a place of ritual prostration') was rightfully named 'Madina Masjid' and became a place of prayer and worship for local villagers of Muslim faith.
