The Cape Coral Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the City of Cape Coral, Florida. The department covers 120 sq. mi. and a population of 200,000. Additionally, the department covers over 400 miles of canals within the city.

History

The Cape Coral Fire Department traces its roots back to 1962 when a series of fires led to the citizens of the community to create an independent fire district. Cape Coral incorporated in 1970 and the fire district was abolished. The City of Cape Coral took over fire services as a City department in 1971. From 1972 to 2017, the city would construct 10 additional fire stations to better serve the community.

Operations

The CCFD operate 11 fire stations strategically located throughout the city.

Special Operations

The CCFD operates a Hazmat unit and a marine unit. These units are cross staffed and can respond outside the City if need be.

Hazmat Unit

The Hazardous Materials Team is comprised of 48 technicians who are trained in areas of hazard pre-planning, chemistry, event mitigation, hazard analysis, and decontamination. Their equipment includes air/gas monitors, radiation detectors, protective clothing, leak stop devices, and decontamination equipment.

Marine Unit

The CCFD Marine Unit consists of 96 members and 3 boats. They respond to incidents such as fires, search and rescues, and vessels in distress, and are part of Lee County's Marine Emergency Response Team (MERT).

Dive Unit

With over 400 miles of waterways, the CCFD responds to calls such as cars and animals in canals, boating accidents, and drownings. All firefighters are rescue swimmers. Additionally, the CCFD has 50 divers who have advanced training and use equipment such as dry suits and full face mask communications.

EMS

The Cape Coral Fire Department contracts with Lee County EMS for transport services. The county has 7 medic units at the fire stations along with 2 medic units located at EMS stations.

The CCFD also operates 4 BLS Rescue units whose main responsibility is EMS response.

Future

Fire Station 12 is starting construction in early 2021. Fire Station 13 will start construction the following year.

Fire Station 2 is to be rebuilt this year.

Fire Station 5 is being expanded to house additional personnel during a storm. This is due to the station being one of the few located outside a flood zone.

The Cape Coral Police and Fire Departments are planning on building a joint training facility to help better train its personnel. Currently, firefighters have to use other departments facilities to train.

Two new engines and one new ladder will be purchased from Sutphen this year.
