O-aew
O-aew (Template:Lang-th,[a] RTGS: o-eo, pronounced [ôʔěːw], from Chinese: 薁蕘) is a shaved ice dessert known as a local specialty of Phuket, Thailand. Introduced by Hokkien Chinese settlers, it is known after its main ingredient, a special jelly made from seeds of the o-aew plant (a variety of the creeping fig, Ficus pumila var. awkeotsang), an ingredient now most commonly found in Taiwan where it is known as aiyu jelly.
History
O-aew originally came from Penang, Malaysia. The first man who sold o-aew in Phuket is Chinese refugee named Pa Eng. Until today his family still continue this business. They said that this dessertused to be called Bun Tau Bie in Penang, but the name changed because of the accent and became o-aew till today. Others say that the name o-aew is also a kind of dessert in Taiwan and very popular in the summer time, then was imported to Phuket by Chinese workers.
Ingredients
O-aew is a clear jelly with no color that is made of banana and jia kor (Chinese herb). Thai people used to eat it without any other toppings, but nowadays o-aew is adapted and developed to eat with shaved ice with Toppings, such as boiled red bean, grass jelly and red syrup.
Availability
O-aew can be found in Phuket and mostly in Phuket old towns. On Thalang and Krabi roads.
Variety
O-aew is made to order. You can choose the topping by yourself. Red-White means o-aew with red beans. White-Black means o-aew with black jelly grass and White-Red-Black means to put in everything.
