Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

re-edited Raid (2018) movie page

The word "crores" is not commonly known to readers of English (at least, not to most of such readers outside of India and Pakistan who do not know Hindi or Urdu), but it's obvious from context that it means a large number (of units of money). My insertion of the parenthetical "(tens of millions)" was intended merely to allay the jarring effect of encountering an unfamiliar foreign word in an English sentence, without further disrupting the flow of the synopsis by inclusion of further distractants.

In response to your elision of that insertion, I re-instated it, adding wikilink brackets around the word "crores" to reference the wikipedia article, and copying the Encyclopedia Britannica citation from that article.

I suppose I could have included a reference to the wiktionary etymology: Hindi करोड़ (karoṛ) and Urdu کروڑ‎ (karoṛ), from Sanskrit कोटि (koṭi), but that would in my view have been a trifle sarcastic.

Thanks for your courteous message.

Mabuhi nga dugay ug magmauswagon (Live long and prosper) -- I don't know Cebuano, but I know enough German to know what "mauswagon" means:

John

American men's basketball players

I see that you have been adding Category:American men's basketball players via AWB. I noticed that you added the category to Alfred Aboya, but I see no indication that he is American (unless I am missing something?) Perhaps it's a one-off error. Otherwise, it's just a minor tweak in your AWB algorithm. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 08:54, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Bagumba Yes, it is an error. I am adding cats for a while now and that's why I overlooked the page and clicked "Save". Thanks for noticing and reverting. Babymissfortune 10:25, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Blks

Hi , I have changed quite a few "Blks" in basketball articles. So you can revert if you like. But if you want to do so can you please add the meaning of "Blks" to wiktionary here? Graeme Bartlett (talk) 04:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Quick note... not vand

This was probably not vandalism; although I can fully understand why you reverted the edit (and I might too have made the same mistake). But leaving the note as I've now allowed the editor's request to be incorporated in the article, post their note at the Help desk. Thanks, Lourdes 07:10, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

@Lourdes: Thanks for noticing. It was supposed to be an AGF revert instead of a vandalism rv, but I clicked the wrong button. Babymissfortune 07:13, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Columbian Dyip colors

Hi Babymissfortune, can you please change the colors of Colubmian Dyip from Blue/Red to Green/Dark Blue with green as their dominant color? This is the link of their color change. https://www.spin.ph/basketball/pba/fresh-look-new-hope-as-columbian-switches-to-green-jerseys-to-start-perez-era-a793-20181219. Thank you. Gayviewmahat (talk)

Edit to Judo

I don't care who you are. If anything before you removed my edit just like you sent a message telling me you took it down. You could have sent a message telling me to add a citation. Btw the rule set you sent said I didn't really need to reference anything. If you want to know my source. I am my source. I am the founder of Shiloah Judo and next time ask before you jump on your high horse with this foolishness. Hell I just got on the dam thing wasn't even finished with the edit and you start with this trash lol Theeldersofshiloah (talk) 15:41, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Instead of accusing other editors of "foolishness" and "trash," try actually understanding the policies and guidelines first. Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. Verifiability is a policy, and unless you can provide a reliable source, the edit in question does not belong on this encyclopedia. --Kinu t/c 18:06, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Aieshalaine Gannaban

Depressing to see that whilst you are happy to work on US male players of team sports, you're nominating female members of non-US team sports for deletion. Do you maybe want to go off and have a long think about that? cf. Aieshalaine Gannaban. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:29, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

@Tagishsimon: I filed the page for deletion because it fails WP:GNG. This has nothing to do with gender, sport or nationality. Babymissfortune 13:32, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Reaction for your marking for deletion the page: List of Formula One wet weather races

A wet weather race is very important parameter of F1. Race. It is important for statistics, race conditions. Wet weather also changing the regulation of race. Some of the drivers are real specialist for wet races. Windy races has no real influence for motor racing, but rain so much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brankom (talkcontribs) 16:20, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
