The Wrecks are an American alternative rock band from Thousand Oaks, California. The band is currently made up of Nick Anderson, Nick "Schmizz" Schmidt, Aaron Kelley, and Billy Nally.[1]

History

The Wrecks were initially formed by friends Nick Anderson and Aaron Kelley.[2] A mutual friend introduced them to Nick Schmidt and Billy Nally, who attended school together in New Jersey.[3] Schmidt and Nally, interested in the opportunity, met with Anderson and Kelley to record an album. All of the band members were in their early twenties; Anderson is the only member native to California, the majority hailing from the east coast. In regards to their band name, Anderson has stated, "Someone just said it one day. Coming up with a band name sucks."[4]

In 2016, Anderson gained access to a professional studio, albeit without permission, and the group self-recorded their debut EP, We Are The Wrecks, in just three days, with sound engineer Andrew D'Angelo serving as co-producer.[5] In December 2016, the line-up signed with Another Century Records. Soon after, their debut single "Favorite Liar" received significant airplay and charted in the top forty on alternative radio.[6] The single obtained five million Spotify streams within a year of its release[7]; as of December 2020, it has over twenty-five million streams.

After their record deal, the Wrecks attempted to record their sophomore EP in Los Angeles[8]; however, discontent with its sound, the band abandoned the project to start from scratch. Having depleted their budget, they continued to fund their endeavors by participating in medical studies[9] and working minimum wage jobs.[10] The band temporarily moved into Anderson's grandmother's home in Wellsville, New York and finished their next EP, Panic Vertigo, at the barn studio of friend Patrick Barry. Throughout the process, D'Angelo remained the band's sound engineer and co-producer.[11] The recording process took one and a half years[12], and Panic Vertigo was released on February 16, 2018.

At some point during 2017, Westen Weiss joined the band but subsequently left in 2019 to pursue a career in producing, once again making the Wrecks a four-piece ensemble.

The Wrecks released their debut album, Infinitely Ordinary, on May 1, 2020 via Big Noise Music Group.[13] On December 18, 2020, the Wrecks released their third EP, Static.[14]

Touring

The Wrecks have toured with bands such as All Time Low, SWMRS, Waterparks, and the Struts.[15][16] Additionally, the Wrecks have opened for Nothing But Thieves, New Politics, and Paramore on nationwide tours.[17]

The Wrecks have also performed at music festivals like the Bunbury Music Festival.[18] After performing as an opening band for All Time Low's "The Young Renegades Tour", the Wrecks embarked on their first headlining tour, the Robot Army Tour.[19] In 2018, the band headlined their second tour, the Panic Vertigo Tour.[20]

Artistry

The Wrecks draw influence from the likes of the Pixies, the Strokes, Weezer, and Vampire Weekend.[21] Their music has also been described as "energetic" and "pop-punk".[22] It has been noted that the band engages and interacts with the audience during live performances.[23]
