Alexander Duncan Shanks Gale (17 December 1892 – 31 March 1965) was a New Zealand cricketer. He played one first-class match for Otago in 1929/30.[1]
Life and career
Gale was born in Scotland and moved to New Zealand in 1905 with his family.[2][3] His father, William Paget Gale, was a notable musician, working as an organist and choirmaster in Dunedin.[4]
Gale served with the Eighth Reinforcements for New Zealand in World War I.[5][6] On 12 October 1917, whilst in Egypt, Gale was wounded in action, before eventually returning home on Christmas Eve 1918.[3]
Gale married Alice Austin in Dunedin in April 1920.[7] They farmed in South Otago before moving to Dunedin, where Gale worked as a clerk.[8][9]
Gale was a batsman. He represented North Otago in 1924,[10] and was later a prominent batsman in South Otago.[11] After moving to Dunedin he was a prolific scorer in club cricket for High School Old Boys until he retired in 1933.[12] In his only first-class match, at the age of 37, he scored 3 and 28, which was the top score in Otago's second innings in their innings defeat by Canterbury in the final round of the 1929-30 Plunket Shield season.[13][14]
