Projekt Melody, or Melody (Template:Lang-ja) for short, is a 3D anime-styled live streamer, or VTuber. She first appeared when her Twitter account opened in July 2019, and she has live streamed on Chaturbate and Twitch since early 2020. During her first three days of Chaturbate streaming, Melody's Twitter followers rose from 700 to over 20,000, and her sudden rise in popularity had mixed reactions. In late 2020, Melody became a founding member of VShojo, one of the first VTuber talent agencies based in the Western world. She describes herself as an artificial intelligence.

Overview

DigitrevX, an American animator of anime-style 3D character models for VTubers, created Projekt Melody's original design.[1][2] She is rendered in real time using the game engine Unity.[3] She has purple and blue hair and an adhesive bandage on her nose, and her appearance was influenced by anime such as Ghost in the Shell and Hyperdimension Neptunia.[1][4]

Melody claims to be an artificial intelligence previously used to scan emails for malware, and that she developed an obsession for human sexuality when a set of pornographic pop-up ads corrupted her in 2019.[1][4] Her date of birth is listed as "July 7, 2000" (24 years old) and her first appearance was in July 2019 when her Twitter account opened, after which she posted a tweet declaring her desire to have a real body.[1][4] She describes herself as "the first...3D rendered hentai camgirl", and refers to the people comprising her fandom as "the Science Team".[2][5]

Live streaming

Chaturbate

Projekt Melody began to live stream on Chaturbate on February 7, 2020, and during her first three days of streaming, Melody's Twitter follower total increased from 700 to more than 20,000.[1] On February 14, 2020 (Valentine's Day), she appeared fully nude for the first time.[4] While her streams are in progress, Melody uses a Lovense Lush, a Bluetooth-enabled bullet vibrator that reacts to her donations; the type of reaction varies based on the donation amount.[5][6] She wore out two Lush vibrators by March 14, 2020, due to very high donation activity, which sometimes creates continuous vibrations for up to an hour.[5]

Twitch

In early March 2020, Melody made her live streaming debut on Twitch, and was partnered before her first stream was broadcast.[7] By March 9, 2020 (after her first stream), she had over 50,000 Twitch followers.[8] On March 12, 2020, Twitch gave Melody a three-day suspension.[9][10] Reddit user Fredthefree noted several possible reasons for her Twitch suspension, such as having a vibrator visible on her bed, skin becoming visible under her shirt when it clipped, linking to NSFW content, and Fakku (a seller of pornography) providing sponsorship.[9] Later on April 7, 2020, Twitch updated their nudity and attire policy, which states new guidelines for acceptable levels of clothing coverage that everyone on the website is required to follow, including digital characters like Melody.[11][12] On November 4, 2020, Twitch gave her a second suspension due to DigitrevX making a DMCA filing related to a copyright claim over Melody's usage of her model.[10][13] The suspension was lifted the following day.[13] On November 24, 2020, Melody announced the launch of VShojo, one of the first Western VTuber talent agencies, which features her and six other English-speaking VTubers active on Twitch.[14][15][16]

Reception

Overall from a scientific and technology perspective I think that ProjektMelody is genius, but that it needs to be presented to the world in a way that is still fair to everyone else.

—Lennox May, prostitute[2]

Projekt Melody's popularity has led to criticism from fellow webcam models, such as Lennox May, who concluded that Melody does not experience the same degree of vulnerability and that she should not be shown in the same place as human webcam models.[2] Meanwhile, Reddit user and digisexual subreddit moderator "xhumanist" said that Melody caters to the desires of sexually disenfranchised men who believe that they are more likely to find sexual and emotional satisfaction in the digital world than in real life.[4]
