Gary William Capo is an American filmmaker, cinematographer, and second unit director.

Life & career

A Southern California native, Capo started his career shooting and directing commercials, TV news and two Olympic Games for Warren Miller Films. Around 1990, he got his big Hollywood break when one of his projects caught the eye of director Randal Kleiser, who brought him aboard his White Fang project as second unit director and cinematographer.[1]

In 2003, Capo photographed and directed second unit filming on The Last Samurai under Edward Zwick. According to main unit cinematographer John Toll in a 2004 interview about the film, he recommended Capo to Zwick as to serve as director and cinematographer for the second unit filming shoot. Capo oversaw a lot of the climatic battle sequence between the Japanese army and the samurai.[2] Zwick later invited him to work on his next film, the 2006 political war thriller Blood Diamond.

Capo is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) as of 2015.[3][4]

Capo has worked with David R. Ellis, usually serving as his cinematographer for his directed works, either main unit like Final Destination 2, Cellular, Asylum, and Shark Night 3D, or second unit like The Perfect Storm, The Negotiator, Deep Blue Sea, R.I.P.D., and Winter's Tale.[5]

Other films he has worked on include The Thin Red Line, Dragonball Evolution, Charlie St. Cloud, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Captain Ron, Fly Away Home, Message in a Bottle, and The Incredible Hulk.[6]
