YouTube links
This article is one of thousands on Wikipedia that have a link to YouTube in it. Based on the External links policy, most of these should probably be removed. I'm putting this message here, on this talk page, to request the regular editors take a look at the link and make sure it doesn't violate policy. In short: 1. 99% of the time YouTube should not be used as a source. 2. We must not link to material that violates someones copyright. If you are not sure if the link on this article should be removed or you would like to help spread this message contact us on this page. Thanks, ---J.S (t|c) 05:17, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
United Controversy
Does anyone else believe that more should be made of the way in which he left United? I also believe that the scale of impact that he had at United hasn't been highlighted enough. Kanchelskis was an awesome player in his pomp and from the article it indicates he was more successful at Everton than United. Siralexf 15:05, 30 January 2007 (UTC)siralexf
- The article claims that Kancheskis and SAF fell out and "he was promptly transfer-listed". This assertion cites no sources and I feel it requires substantiation given that it runs contrary to all the extant information about this notorious transfer, and it is a matter of record that SAF did not wish Kanchelskis to leave, nor did the player himself. It rather looks like an attempt to sanitise was was certainly perceived as, let me say, a problematic, to say the least, transfer. Tarquin Q. Zanzibar (talk) 05:38, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Nationality/citizenship in lead
I am sorry, but this (as I have just found out, rather frequent) removal of "Russian" from the lead is as unjustified as it is ludicrous. The idea that he played for three national teams and hence cannot be described as Russian is just absurd as the three national teams in question are considered succesors of one another (at most we can say Soviet and Russian footballer, if it makes anyone happier). The second and third arguments raised, that this is because he was born in Ukraine or because he had a Ukrainian mother, are not any better. First of all, he was not born in Ukraine – he was born in the Ukrainian SSR of the USSR, in territory that is now part of the country of Ukraine, not a trivial distinction considering that he represented the Soviet Union internationally. Secondly, ethnic origin or family background is no reason to object to his nationality in the lead (good luck removing French from Mbappe's lead!).
Most importantly, with very rare exceptions, such as a player being declared ineligible or giving up their citizenship, we consistently describe footballers or sportsmen by their sports nationality: for example, Sergei Semak, born in the USSR in territory that today is in Ukraine, played for the Russian national team, works in Russia, correctly described as Russian; Artem Yashkin, born in what today is Russia, took up Ukrainian citizenship, played for Ukraine, described as Ukrainian in the lead; Oleksandr Aliyev, born in territory that is today part of Russia, represented Ukraine, lives in Ukraine, is described as Ukrainian (and rightly so); Artem Milevskyi, born in what today is Belarus, represented Belarus at youth level, naturalised Ukrainian, represented Ukraine at a senior level, is described as Ukrainian (again, correctly so).
The case with Kanchelskis is very straightforward as he did not even naturalise, he just chose Russian citizenship after the dissolution of the USSR. This is also not a borderline case like a Brazilian playing one game for East Timor, as Kanchelskis played for Russia over an extended period of time, he continues to live and work in Russia (as does, for instance, Aliyev in Ukraine), is consistently described as Russian by the sources, and does not even have Ukrainian citizenship as far as I am aware. The fact that we ended up with a long and convoluted lead because a handful of editors insist on gatekeeping the article, against both logic and MOS, is evidence of the silliness of this all. I will be restoring my changes and likely return to clean up the lead. If this stonewalling continues I am afraid this will end up at one of the noticeboards. Cheers. - You keep referring to the "tp" even though you’ve had a discussion with only yourself here. That isn’t how "see talk" reversions work. Seasider53 (talk) 18:58, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- I do not think I need to explain that it is rather complicated to hold a talk page discussion when users proceed to revert instead of looking at an open talk page discussion and commenting on it. Furthermore, this need not even be a discussion, as a handful of users seem to be applying and ad-hoc policy to this article that ignores sources, precedent, policy and MOS considerations. I have no idea of why this is being done, but this is certainly problematic as soon after being reverted I noticed that this same issue has occurred in the past, and the justifications have not gotten any better with time.
