Did You Know A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on July 2, 2008.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the first modern time capsule was Thornwell JacobsCrypt of Civilization at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta, Georgia, due to be opened May 28, 8113?
Current status: Delisted good article

Untitled

I'm just being curious about one thing that I couldn't find anywhere on the Crypt's website, how is it supposed to only be opened in 8113? Because it seems that the purpose is written somewhere, but, it seems that basically nothing prevents it from being opened anytime before, right?

Technically, you're correct. *Any* time capsule could be opened at any time before the date the capsule's creators have specified. But the reason the Crypt's creators selected 8113 as the opening date for the Crypt was because they figured that if the Crypt was created at 4000-some years after the beginning of historical fixed date recording ---- and what the Crypt represents is everything that has been achieved up to that point -- then why not have the Crypt be opened 4000 years later? That would place the Crypt chronologically at the half-way point on the gigantic master timeline. This point is addressed on both the Crypt's official site as well as here in the Wiki article.OUPetey 16:58, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spacing between sentences

Any particular reason for the extra spacing between sentences and paragraphs? Should it not be single space?--Doug Coldwell talk 23:37, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When was the crypt sealed?

When was the crypt sealed? This should be stated explicitly in the first paragraph. One part of the article states that the crypt was converted from a swimming pool to a storage space between 1937 and 1940, but a later section states that the crypt was sealed in 1936. J. Finkelstein (talk) 17:44, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been corrected to 1940 as the sealing date.--Doug Coldwell talk 18:23, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thornwell Jacobs made a mistake in the calculation

There was no 0 year between 1 BC and 1 AD. It means that there is a period in 6176 years between 4241 BC and 1936 AD. Therefore, 6176 years since 1936 AD is 8112 AD. Nicolas Love (talk) 18:23, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
