Why Baron? Presumably this was not a British title. Nor, using the given name Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, was he the Baron. It looks like some kind of Frenchified Austrian title. --Henrygb 12:32, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- you are right -- Frenchified Austrian says it all! Family was granted nobility by Emporer of Austria-Hungary, hence the Baron, and then the French branch adopted the "de" nobility mark, and many used both at the same time. I think there is a term in linguistics for this... a bit like river avon meaning "river river". Baron F certainly always referred to himself with both elements together. --mervyn 21:35, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)
