Is this codec patented?

Voip: G.726 and faxing

Does fax qualify as a "modem" in the context of this article even through fax is half duplex? I just wanted to point out that I have my ata setup to not try and change the codec to ulaw when a fax goes through. So that both voice and fax calls use the same settings. The reason why is I had trouble with high network jitter breaking up the call audio, and switching to g.726 reduced the jitter due to it using fewer packets. Well anyway I routinely send 9600 faxes over g.726 with the 24kbps data rate. Tech info I found while browsing the net

G.726 makes use of a 6-th order backward adaptive predictor as well as adaptive differential coding. This substantial extra complexity is implemented to get tones, especially DTMF ones, through without serious quality degradation, and to avoid repeated degradations in tandem operation.

In contrast, IMA ADPCM does not have the adaptive predictor, which makes it a much simpler algorithm, although the quality suffers especially on the stationary signal. 87.97.49.34 (talk) 09:32, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
