W This article is suffused with emotive words in the 'Leadership' section, making it sound like a campaign profile and not a balanced Wikipedia entry. I'm going to try to 'tone it down' a bit.

Avoid Edit Warring

I advise both of you to cease edit warring on this page and discuss the changes on the talk page before you decide to add anything, to prevent any unneeded work for the administrators which could lead to blocks or bans for the both of you -- febtalk 22:24, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, please use references. The last good edit i can see in the history was made by User:Weggie[1]. He is correct. Any unreferenced material will probably be removed.Gab.popp 10:40, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have found references for the trade union poll i think its toned down enough thanks

Spelling and grammatical errors

My firefox spell checker has spotted dozens of spelling errors and i have spotted several grammatical errors. Gab.popp 10:36, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is not clear what is meant when the article says that "McDonnell has claimed that he is aware of mistakes made by previous Labour oppositions during the 1970s and 1980s. He has vowed that an Opposition led by him would make no such mistakes." Does this mean that McDonnell expects to be party leader only when the party is in opposition? And what exactly are the mistakes as McDonnell views them? -- james.

To update on the above, I can't find anything on the website about "past failures". Unsurprising perhaps, who would dwell on the negative? But the question of McDonnell as opposition leader is still open for clarification. - james

Finished copyedit. Some misspellings and a lot of incorrect punctuation. Removed Copyedit tag. Lexi kate (talk) 15:21, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:John McDonnell gategourmet.jpg

Image:John McDonnell gategourmet.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Support for Campaign for a New Workers Party?

To the best of my knowledge, John has never spoken in favour of the SP campaign for a new workers' party. He has spoken at events they have organised - but by and large his comments have been to say that there needs to be a broad front between those to the Left of Labour and the Left in Labour. This would include the SP initiative, but importantly John is not recommending people join the CNWP or vote for them. He would face serious questions within Labour if that were so, not to mention within the Labour Representation Committee. The LRC is vehemently against association with those who run electoral campaigns against Labour - as evidenced by its refusal to allow such groups to participate within its youth group, Socialist Youth Network. - DS (20.57, 26.10.2008)

candidate?

It is being claimed that he is a candidate for the 2010 labour party leader election, any support for this claim? Off2riorob (talk) 22:17, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

IRA support

Should McDonnell's support for the IRA have its own section? It was what he was most famous for until becoming Shadow Chancellor last year. (92.4.12.161 (talk) 15:17, 5 January 2016 (UTC))[reply]

New page

Should we move this page to John McDonnell? McDonnell, as Shadow Chancellor is surely notable enough now to be the person most people think of? Absolutelypuremilk (talk) 20:31, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 28 June 2016

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Moved per consensus — JFG talk 06:06, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

– Overwhelming primary topic per page views on English Wikipedia. The Shadow Chancellor received just above 12K views at the peak in the last year (probably due to news surrounding Osborne's Fiscal Charter) and only 66 of the 275 days in that period following the September gap did page views here fall below 250. None of the other persons came close to that even when maxed out:

  1. businessman
  2. coach
  3. association footballer
  4. producer
  5. playwright

If support for a double move is weak I would obviously support a redirect. CaradhrasAiguo (talk) 15:32, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Trotskyist

Is there any source where he explicitly claims to support Trotskyism? I can't seem to find it in the article anywhere. If no source can be provided, then I feel it would be appropriate to remove the "British Trotskyist" category. (As an aside, I do think he has claimed to be a Marxist, so perhaps it would indeed be appropriate to replace "Trotskyist" with Marxist, so long as his supposed Marxism is mentioned in the article itself and can be sourced) PatrioticProletarian (talk) 06:14, 10 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
