- Is their a way to exclude the results before 2014 as it would not prove anything if the results included pre-2014 results? @In ictu oculi: -sarvajna (talk) 20:00, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
- Google News searches pretty well do that automatically, most of those are recent. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:25, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

- Support My peep into Google Map shows that indeed when we look for Gulbarga, you get Kalaburagi. And, the renaming is quite well documented. A search for gulbarga city corporation and kalaburagi city corporation shows that the city corporation is indeed called Kalaburagi. Aditya(talk • contribs) 03:35, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- All of that is irrelevant unfortunately. The only thing that matters is whether common usage (usually tested by news sources) have picked up the official change. These changes often take years. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:37, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- The Wikipedia policy is WP:MPN - use modern names, like using Istanbul, Dubrovnik, Volgograd and Saint Petersburg instead of Constantinople, Ragusa, Stalingrad or Leningrad. Aditya(talk • contribs) 00:53, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

- Oppose Searches show up results in both Gulbarga and Kalaburagi. Most of the renamed cities in Karnataka go by their old names here. Though the official names were changed in 2014, repeated surveys at moving Belgaum, Bellary, Bangalore, Bijapur, Chikmagalur, Hubli, Hospet, Tumkur and Shimoga have yielded no consensus. - I can get search results for Bombay as well. -sarvajna (talk) 22:19, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
- Support per WP:MPN. Latest sources including news, use "Kalaburgi" now. Lorstaking (talk) 05:45, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Comment the original post proposed a move to a less common variant Kalaburgi when it should have been to the official name Kalaburagi. The latter is much more common in news searches, and is also more common than Gulbarga. The search quoted by In ictu oculi is of little value to the wider question of renaming to the official name. There should be a new discussion. Imc (talk) 07:57, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Alternate name
The city is in all official documents and local language is known as Kalaburagi[1]. The more historical name is Gulbarga so we will keep it as prime name but why revert the parameter other_name= to Gulbarga in Infobox settlement template when the main name parameter is set to Gulbarga already? Discuss before reverting. JayB91 (talk) 23:01, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Proposal to move from Gulbarga to Kalaburagi - Discussion till 31st May 2020 before formal request to move
Except Wikipedia article, everywhere the city and district is referred as "Kalaburagi" or in a colloquial dialect "Kalburgi". Isn't it time to update Wiki articles and make it consistent with common usage to remove confusions? --Bmmanjesh (talk) 10:36, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- What reliable sources can you cite to show that, world-wide, it is more commonly referred to as Kalaburagi, not Gulbarga?
Although only a vague indication, Kalaburagi has 1.29 million Google matches, and Gulbarga has 14.6 million matches - more than 11 times as many - Arjayay (talk) 11:27, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
--- While your observation on Google results for "Gulbarga" and "Kalaburagi" is correct, I believe more appropriate criteria would be Google News rather than generic Google Search. Because, generic google search results will fetch historic web pages as well. Here is what you'll find in Google News. "Kalaburagi" returns 119K results with lots of relevant and up-to-date news about the city/district whereas "Gulbarga" returns 24.2K results but mostly about "Gulbarga Institute of Medical Science" while the main article even in those cases refer to the place as "Kalaburagi"

Arjayay Your example of Vienna is quite misplaced. Unlike Vienna, there are no two different names for Kalaburagi. It was Gulbarga both in local language as well as English. Now it has been restored its original name Kalaburagi. It is a change similar to Madras --> Chennai. Bombay --> Mumbai. We don't see Chennai page named as Madras, do we?
Here's another clarification from the official tourism website of the state. Both in Kannada and English the place has the same name "Kalaburagi". Karnataka Tourism. I hope this clarifies.
Moreover, all the news articles pan India and even the foreign dailies use the name Kalaburagi. Sticking to Gulbarga here in Wiki is not only misleading, but also futile and defeats the purpose of Wiki.

I changed the section heading. This is a proposal and I encourage all those who are interested in participating the discussion to pitch in. Based on the responses in support and against till 31st May 2020, I'll initiate a formal request for the page move.
--Bmmanjesh (talk) 04:29, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
- And I've changed the title back again - you can't arbitrarily change an existing discussion and set your own closing date.
As with the previous discussions, You need to follow the procedure at Wikipedia:Requested moves.
When you have done this properly, the proposal will automatically be included in the official proposals list, a banner will be added to the article page, and relevant projects will be informed.
When the discussion has run its course, which may require it to be relisted to generate further input, an uninvolved editor will close the discussion and decide on the proposal.
Please note that currently there is a considerable backlog, so this could take some time - Arjayay (talk) 10:20, 16 April 2020 (UTC)- I see you have changed the title of this section again. I will assume good faith, and that you are trying to gauge whether it is worth your while starting a debate at Wikipedia:Requested moves.
Having already failed two debates at Wikipedia:Requested moves, it must now pass a proper debate there, in order to be renamed.
FWIW, in case you had not guessed, I will be opposing the move - Arjayay (talk) 09:20, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- I see you have changed the title of this section again. I will assume good faith, and that you are trying to gauge whether it is worth your while starting a debate at Wikipedia:Requested moves.
Arjayay Yes, you're right. I didn't want to start a Wikipedia:Requested moves unnecessarily when there have been previous attempts which agreed to maintain the status quo for time being at the time decision was made. However, last such formal debate happened 3 years ago. It has been considerably long duration since. This change is due for a while considering how the name has picked up across the globe in all media, tourism etc. Keeping Wikipedia out of sync with the world defeats the purpose of the Wikipedia article.
Of course, you're most welcome to oppose. I'm sure you would have sources supporting that view which I and others who support the change might not be aware of. Please feel free to share 'em here -- Bmmanjesh (talk) 11:45, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

- Support: Yes. It is high time that the city name should be renamed. Most of the English News sources have started addressing as Kalaburagi since quite sometime. Even the Railway station is also renamed a couple of years ago.[2]. Don't understand why this outdated criteria of number of Google search results being followed only when restoring the Karnataka places names. -Vijethnbharadwaj (talk) 12:27, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
