Cordova

Likely named for Rancho Cordova, California which is near Intel's Folsom plant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.25.84.238 (talk) 18:50, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Harpertown

Harpertown - eight or quad core?

Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_future_Intel_Xeon_microprocessors#.22Harpertown.22_.28standard-voltage.2C_45_nm.29

it is listed as quad-core, but in this section (and on main Xeon page) it says it's 8-core. I beleive it should be listed as quad-core, regaldless of 2P configurations.

Family/Model/Stepping

The Family/Model/Stepping column seems totally unnecessary given that only two entries out of dozens make use of it. I will remove it in a few days if there are no objections. 208.66.208.200 19:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

adding column with year of introduction?

I think that a column should be added with the year of introduction. Andries 11:46, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not a bad idea. Two remarks: 1) Some codenames relate to products that were never introduced. 2) Good luck on finding all the dates. It must be possible but it's going to be a lot of work (but then again so was composing this list in the first place). The Seventh Taylor 13:12, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely agreed, I actually came here to point that out when I read this. :) Sorting on that would suddenly make this list a chornological history of codenames as well, and also assist users in finding the codename for recent technologies. But yes, it'll take some work of course. — Northgrove 12:05, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with having the year, but so far the few entries in this column have full dates. Are the month and day really worthwhile? Also, what does the date mean? Is it the first public mention of the code name? Snoofer (talk) 03:04, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adding sortable column of prodct?

Wouldn't it make sense to add a column of what product the codename corresponds to, such as Processor, Centrino Platform, Chipset, etc., and thus have it sortable for users? I'll see what I can do later today. Suigi (talk) 00:39, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Almador core

There is no such county as "Almador" county in california. There is an "Amador" but that's all. Thus to speculate that the Almador codename is a CA county is incorrect.149.136.17.253 (talk) 16:05, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is according to List of school districts in California. Do I misunderstand something here? The Seventh Taylor (talk) 06:49, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, the peril of relying on Wikipedia for accurate information :-) Good to see you've changed the "Named after" to "Reference unknown".

Aliceton

As a successor of Tigerton, it may refer the the film "Alice in Wonderland". A Tiger appears to her from time to time, and explains the strange world. --Ddeml (talk) 11:37, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most of "Named After" entries should be removed?

According to WP:NOT: "Wikipedia is not a collection of unverifiable speculation...Articles that present extrapolation, speculation, and "future history" are original research and therefore inappropriate." None of the text in the "Named After" column is referenced and a good portion of it is entirely speculative - e.g. "Possibly Lake Windigo, Minnesota" - so it shouldn't be in this article right?

Thoughts? -- Hux (talk) 18:07, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

––

I concur. This is not what I'd call encyclopedic, it's mere speculation without citation. Perhaps if someone could get some docco from Intel to verify this it'd be more "useful" information, but until then... well, what's the point? I can run a google search on a name as well as anyone else and say "Possibly named after...".

Yes, please remove them, a) Unless someone from Intel confirms, in a verifiable manner, what a codename is named after this is all original research, aka guesswork b) is it actually useful even if we had all the references ?--Flibble (talk) 14:15, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Creeks

What can be said about codenames ending in "creek"? (Bridge Creek, Rock Creek, Salt Creek, Soda Creek) Can anything be generalized about them? The Seventh Taylor (talk) 10:20, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And what about recent names ending in ~son? I guess Kittson, Madison, Paulson are all Itanium family members but where does Robson fit in?
Also, what about the "ville" suffix? (Diamondville, Lyndonville, Millville, Paxville, Postville, Sodaville) The Seventh Taylor (talk) 07:20, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Missing entries

The following codenames (mostly recent but not all) are yet to be added:

  • Romley Done
  • Polaris Done
  • Waimea Bay Done
  • Patsburg Done
  • Oak Trail Done
  • Canoe Lake Done
  • Tunnel Creek Done

I will add them later on but feel free to do so already. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 00:34, 16 September 2010 (UTC) Plus:[reply]

  • Lyndonville Done
  • Postville Done
  • Soda Creek Done
  • Glen Brook Done

The Seventh Taylor (talk) 22:27, 5 October 2010 (UTC) Thanks Snoofer for all the work done. I was going to suggest Oak Trail, Stellarton, Tunnel Creek, Cedar Trail, Lyndonville, Ramsdale, Larsen creek, Cherryville, Paint Creek, Elmcrest, Airmont and Silvermont but I noticed all of them are done already. The only new one yet missing then seems to be Brickland; see [3] The Seventh Taylor (talk) 00:00, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. I have added Brickland to my list of missing codenames, which has about 45 names on it. Currently I am doing a sweep through the list cleaning up the descriptions, adding an interesting detail or two about each one, and putting in the years. Snoofer (talk) 01:42, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

More impressive work today! The Seventh Taylor (talk) 01:12, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IDF 2011

New codenames so far:

  • Clover Trail Done
  • Red Ridge [4] Done
  • Knights Ferry Done
  • Knights Corner [5] Done

The Seventh Taylor (talk) 23:42, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would add Clover Trail, but I can't figure out whether it's a SoC in its own right, like Medfield, or a platform that includes the Cloverview SoC. Snoofer (talk) 22:30, 20 September 2011 (UTC)"[reply]

This article [6] suggests the latter. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 13:48, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That article states that Cloverview is the platform and Clover Trail is the processor. And this one [7] states the opposite! Snoofer (talk) 00:23, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This official Intel presentation [8] mentions Clover Trail as a platform (slide 30) but then again so it mentions Medfield in the same chart... The Seventh Taylor (talk) 15:10, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Skylake microarchitecture

Also missing:

  • Skylake Done
  • Skymont Done

See Intel Core (microarchitecture)#Technology or Skylake (microarchitecture) The Seventh Taylor (talk) 12:09, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've found a few more

  • Groveland - Part of the SoC chip platform. Done
  • Roe River - An Atom N (Diamondville) and 945GSE (Calistoga) reference mobo
  • Crown Beach - An Atom Z and US15W reference mobo[1] Done
  • Sunset Valley - A ULV Celeron and 854 chipset reference mobo.[2]
  • Red Fort - A Core i5 (Arrandale) and QM57 (Ibex Peak-M) reference mobo
  • Moon Creek - A Atom D (Pineview) and NM10 (Tiger Point) reference mobo
  • Crown Bay - A board with a Shell Bay and Little Bay Done
  • Shell Bay - An EG20T (Topcliffe) board Done
  • Little Bay - An Atom R660 (Tunnel Creek) board
  • Humphreys Peak - A Xeon (sossaman) and 3100 chipset reference board[3]

Ones I'm less sure of

  • Fort Sumter Done
  • Emerald Lake Done
  • Los Lunas
  • Palomar

I own a 'Sunset Valley' so I know that one exists :)

Puma

Is Puma [14] a codename (that should be included) or a commercial product name (that may or may not qualify for inclusion here). The distinction does appear to become somewhat of a grey area, with codenames inclreasingly gaining use as eventual product name. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 15:51, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More predictable codenames

It's silly. One can make up Intel codenames, and when you google them find out they already exist but are still missing in this list. This is how I find the following:

  • Cloverfield; see [16]
  • Diamond Peak; see [17]

Actually there's an interesting overview of announcements here: [18]. Too bad then The Inquirer hasn't maintained it since mid-2005. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 06:25, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another Cave and Creek

Announced this week:

  • Highland Forest, successor to Crystal Forest
  • Coleto Creek, successor to Cave Creek

Edison...

Two more missing entries, apparently unrelated?

  • Edison: a miniature computer with the form factor of an SD card, based on a 22nm Dual Core [20]
  • Edisonville: former name of Microserver DDR3L SoDIMM [21]

Of the first one, I'm not sure whether this would count as a codename or a commercial product name, though sometimes the one transitions into the other. It's probably just a concept and not a commercial product yet so I'd include it. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 03:45, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On a related note: Although now based on Atom, originally the Edison was supposed to be based on the Intel Quark -- another codename or a commercial name? The Seventh Taylor (talk) 19:53, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Moorefield

New codename:

  • Moorefield: 64-bit enabled SoC; 22nm quad-core Z35XX Atom, based on Silvermont microarchitecture. [22]

Just a thought: Wouldn't codenames with Moore (Moorestown, Moorefield) and with Grove (Walnut Grove, Groveland) be tributes to Gordon Moore and Andy Grove? If so, are there more key Intel people referred to in codenames? The Seventh Taylor (talk) 10:14, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Spring 2014 IDF

New names:

  • Brasswell - 14nm architecture for entry systems; successor to 22nm Bay Trail processors [23]

The Seventh Taylor (talk) 22:51, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Some more names that surfaced meanwhile:

  • SoFIA (Smart or Feature phone with Intel Architecture)
  • Goldmont
  • Denverton
  • Broxton
  • Cherry Trail
  • Willow Trail

The Seventh Taylor (talk) 23:02, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Union Bay

I added Cannon Lake to the list. Yet to be added: Union Point, and the platform that these two form together, Union Bay. The Seventh Taylor (talk) 10:28, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A few more place names

I was simply reading this article when a few codenames jumped out to me as familiar. As a resident of Chicago, USA, I thought I'd offer these as possible sources for Intel's names. I have no proof.

I've also spent a great deal of time in Denver, Colorado, USA. A few more may be from that area:

This inspired me to look at other potential sources based on places, mostly using Google Maps:

  • Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland.
  • Anchorage,_Alaska is that state's biggest city.
  • Bear Point is at Lolo National Forest, Montana.
  • Bighorn Peak is a place in Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming as well as in Glacier National Park, Montana.
  • Canyon Peak is a place in Bitterroot National Forest, Montana.
  • Grand County is a city in Utah as well as Colorado.
  • Taylorsville is a city in Utah.

Given Intel's other codenames, these are more likely:

Angel Blue01 (talk) 18:31, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Devil's Canyon

Codename adopted for Haswell Refresh microarch. Should appear at some point after Haswell. 82.21.171.200 (talk) 21:48, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Probable/possible origins

  • Chandler, AZ (East Valley) area names: (Chandler is the location of two of Intel's major sites)
    • FYI: Sossaman and Val Vista are both major north-south roads in the Gilbert, AZ area just east of Chandler.
    • Picket Post: (alt. Picketpost ) this is a well-known mountain right near the Boyce-Thompson Arboretum, a common place to visit.
    • Devil's Canyon: there's a Devil's Canyon just east of the Boyce-Thompson Arboretum on US 60

Although unless someone from Intel steps up and says "That's why we named it this" in a publication, you're not going to get confirmation. My guess is some technical architect gets to pick a name as long as it's geographical.
