Hi I hope this is ok. I thought the original did no justice to Newton's approach to the problem.
Even its application of the Euler-Lagrange equation was not too pretty since it produced a complicated expression that simplifies to the differential equation:
It is my intention to add Newton's method of proof to this article, if that is deemed desirable.
