WikiProject Biography Assessment

I'd like to see more citations and a top picture, but technically a B.

The article may be improved by following the WikiProject Biography 11 easy steps to producing at least a B article. -- Yamara 14:20, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life

Somebody has added (with no source) that McGann came out as bisexual. I think this is plain and simple vandalism. There is no citation and if true this would have sparked more discussion amongst fans of McGann and of Doctor Who (McGann would be the first openly LGBT actor among the 11 "official" Doctor Who lead actors). I am LGBT myself so I'm all for it, but this is an extremely big claim to make with no support. Sevenofrhymes (talk) 16:47, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is Annie McGann here. I have corrected information on this page and someone has changed it back again. I am fed up of journalists using this page with its inaccurate information as a source. Paul McGann is still married to Annie McGann (that's me) and you have got the dates all wrong. Shall I bother to edit it or is someone just going to change it back again? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnnieMcGann (talkcontribs) 23:41, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Information re: marriage is still wrong. 86.26.100.105 (talk) 07:30, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Unfortunately you would need to cite a reliable secondary source in order for the information to be changed. The current content already cites two sources. I'll check them for verification as soon as I can. Regards. DonQuixote (talk) 12:27, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just checked the two sources and whilst The Independent says "divorced", DWM says "separated". Admittedly The Independent's blurb on the matter is questionable (in my opinion) without further sources. I'll look further into this as soon as I can, but providing additional secondary sources can help speed up matters. Regards. DonQuixote (talk) 12:46, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Married 20th July 1991 - date is wrong on the page and therefore all over the internet, 86.26.100.105 (talk) 21:25, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That needs to be attributable to a reliable secondary source. DonQuixote (talk) 00:48, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
After a little search, I found this source which states July 1991: [1], but I'm a little hesitant to use it because it's the Daily Mail. DonQuixote (talk) 17:34, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Annie McGann here: May I say that the citations from elsewhere are simply copying what is on this page. It is going round in a circle of wrong. I can't supply a certificate of not divorce can I? Having to prove a negative is famously difficult. 86.26.100.105 (talk) 22:34, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How about this link? Is this any good to verify us as a married couple? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwk8nbwgo58 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.26.100.105 (talkcontribs)
Although the video itself can't be cited (it's mainly about politics), it casts huge doubts on the original Independent article. And, if you check this article, other editors have made the corrections. DonQuixote (talk) 01:37, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@DonQuixote: Why can't the video be cited for non-political claims? Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 11:16, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Emir of Wikipedia: Because the video is mainly about politics. If it's not mentioned in the video, then it can't be attributed to the video. DonQuixote (talk) 13:37, 28 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The part about Paul's family is wrong. it is true that his mum had twin boys but they were born prematurely and sadly they both died. They were called Joseph and John. Paul's brother Joseph was born in 1958 and obviously named for his dead brother. Paul's second name is John. Seems incredible that someone would take it upon themselves to make something like that up and give Joe a dead twin! — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnnieMcGann (talkcontribs) 23:58, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to read about the family history is is now in my brother in law's book. Here's a nice citation for you: https://www.itv.com/loosewomen/call-the-midwife-actor-stephen-mcgann-my-twin-brothers-tragically-died-at-birth 86.26.100.105 (talk) 22:34, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Annie McGann again (sorry can't figure out how to do signature) Paul and his family lived in Birstall Road in Liverpool 6 as they were growing up and Liverpool is on Merseyside and NOT in Lancashire as someone keeps insisting on writing in (basic geography) Paul wasn't born in Birstall Road though; he was born in a house at the end of Lark Lane which is the area of Liverpool known as Sefton Park. If you need a citation for this I suggest you ask his mum. Not sure that is good enough for wikipedia - for his wife and his mum to correct information. Maybe I'll have to get someone to write an article so you can quote it. Hurmph. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnnieMcGann (talkcontribs) 01:32, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Shame About the Boy

Regarding 'Shame About the Boy' - Paul is not on either side of this record. He did not take part in the recording. If you look at a copy of the record you'll see this is so. It is therefore not a quartet but a trio. It has no reason to be mentioned on Paul McGann's page. Annie McGann — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnnieMcGann (talkcontribs) 20:05, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: The above comment about Shame About The Boy. PAUL DOES NOT SING ON THE RECORDING. The post cited as a reference is WRONG. Just sayin ... Annie McGann 11:24, 30 September 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnnieMcGann (talkcontribs)
@AnnieMcGann: The citation for the bit of information was added by Theroadislong with this edit . If you feel that the information posted is incorrect then you might try posting on User talk:Theroadislong and expressing your concerns to them directly. There's a more formal process you can try as well (See WP:PSCOI#Steps for engagement). Personally, I am not sure if the source citing that particular bit of information satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for a reliable source for biographies about living people because it not only seems to be questionable, but it also seems to be a user generated page with no evident editorial control based upon the "Whom do I contact about abusive and/or legal matters related to this board?" statement shown here. It is best, however, to assume the source was cited in good faith and try and discuss things to reach an amiable resolution if possible. - Marchjuly (talk) 14:07, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The content in question didn't actually say that he sang on the record? I've removed it in any case as it's very minor trivia. Theroadislong (talk) 14:14, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Inaccurate Catherine Zeta Jones section

McGann was already living (I think?) with Annie Milner at the time the press reported him to be having a relationship with Zeta Jones, which all parties denied entirely. McGann reacted very badly to all this, I believe he started refusing to talk to the press following it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.28.13.51 (talkcontribs) 11:31, August 23, 2006 (UTC)

Well spotted. The entry was completely inaccurate and misleading, reporting the tabloid rumours without giving any indication that they were false. The cited Guardian article gives the real story, but the article cited it while presenting the tabloid story as truth! Thanks for the heads-up on that. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 17:16, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

I changed the infobox from celebrity to actor, it has a few more useful things there. It seems that the celebrity one is used a bit, for some reason... which is preferred? El Zoof 00:37, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

mcgannbrothers website

I run a website for Mark, Paul, Stephen and Joe McGann which has, for over a year, been an external link on their respective pages on wikipedia. The links were removed on 18th/19th January. I believe it is an appropriate link as it keeps interested parties updated on what the brothers are currently working on. I receive nothing for running this site and it contains no advertisements, it is purely an information site. I also update their wikipedia pages when I can. Please could you reinstate the link if possible. Micharris (talk) 17:55, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doubtful film

The filmography lists a 1998 version of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (done by Orson Welles in 1975ish) so I'd like to see that. Trouble is, it doesn't show up in Mcgann's IMDB list, and the hyperlink in the filmography links to Coleridge's poem the film would be based on. This film just doesn't exist, so who put it there and why?82.43.250.74 (talk) 23:24, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why wasn't Paul McGann used in the 2005 revival of Doctor Who?

Was he offered the job, or did the BBC just not want him?108.38.34.26 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:12, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As Stuart said in Queer as Folk, "Paul McGann doesn't count". --Redrose64 (talk) 14:47, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

I have slightly altered the text concerning Paul McGann's place of birth because although the family grew up in Birstall Road Liverpool 6, Paul was actually born in a house near Lark Lane L17. No need to add trivial detail so I have slightly reworded the sentence. As you have a clear conflict of interest it would be better to make suggestions here and let others do the editing. All good wishes Theroadislong (talk) 15:56, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Right you are :-) Thanks Theroadislong

I'm not editing here and I haven't looked closely at any details, but I'd like to toss out a thought. Any significant change would of course need a Reliable Source to support it, or other Bio justifications, but editors could always decide that some particular detail in the article was so totally insignificant that the article would be improved by dropping it.

References

In Special:Permalink/629577764 I placed an embedded link to the BBC documentary Cosmonauts: How Russia Won the Space Race. This was replaced with a reference. It's not a citation, though, because the BBC page doesn't list the narrator (it lists only the producer, director and executive producer). The only reference to McGann is in the credits at the end of the programme itself (available on iPlayer for the next four weeks only).

I also made the Apples, Pears and Paint programme in Special:Permalink/606202617 an embedded link, but this was changed into bare text without even a reference. There are several other examples of programmes without links. I think this does a disservice to the reader, who might want to follow up a link. The reader is able to do so if there happens to be a WP article, but not if there isn't a WP article (with the current exception of Cosmonauts). This seems inconsistent. The justification for the WP:CS#Avoid embedded links guideline is that embedded links are highly susceptible to linkrot. I think BBC programme pages are an exception to this general rule (maybe there's a BBC page detailing this). I think the rubric at the top of WP:CS applies, and an occasional exeption should be made here to allow embedded links to BBC programmes. (I don't know about non-BBC programmes.) Name in bio

Hey everyone,

I am having a debate with someone about placing McGann's full name in the bio but it continually gets retracted. I would like to see his name present but do not know how to reach a compromise. What do I do?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JackWhovian (talkcontribs) 21:26, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
