Where to put this article

Google returns more hits for "Toadfish Rebecchi" than it does for "Toadie Rebecchi", but Toadie Neighbours returns a lot more hits than Toadfish Neighbours. I think that shows that people are more likely to recognise "Toadie" than they are "Toadfish". Also, the name used on the character's profile on the Neighbours website is Toadie Rebecchi. He is named in the credits as "Toadfish". I thought that was how we were naming articles. If we're using the abbreviations then we may as well move "Stephanie Hoyland" to "Steph Hoyland". Kogsquinge 23:21, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

No, article names should use what English speakers are most likely to recognise. If Steph Hoyland is more recognised than Stephanie Hoyland, that article should be moved as well. J Di 17:54, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

The character has (at various times circa 2002) been credited onscreen as Toadie in the beginning credits, however always Toadfish in the ending credits. Personally, I think that the article name should stay the same, as it's more "proper," however a redirect from "Toadie Rebecchi" would be appropriate. --HillbillyProfane (talk) 05:53, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Why is this tagged for possible deletion?

The article lists that the notability of the subject is in question, yet there is no discussion of it here. People are always tagging things and not backing it up, it's all rather silly. I feel this article has a place on Wikipedia. This character is in a leading role in an internationally-known television program, screened in more than 60 countries. What is he named after?

The article said his name "derives from the Toadfish." However, my understanding is that in Australian usage, "toadfish," "toado," or "toadie" does not refer to the fishes described in that article, but to the smooth toadfish, common toadfish, or banded toadfish. Those small fishes are very common in Australia coastal waters, but are poisonous to eat. The connection with his brother Stonefish Rebecchi, makes me think a poisonous fish is intended. I've changed the article on that basis, but it would be good if any fans who are fishermen could double-check this. -- Radagast3 (talk) 07:30, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I think the name Toadfish is just a Rebecchi family thing, like you pointed out his brother is Stonefish and other family members have included Stingray, Gemfish and Tadpole. To be honest if there isn't a reliable references explaining what he's named after, the sentence should probably be removed. - JuneGloom07 Talk? 22:17, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Oh, I wouldn't remove the reference. It's pretty clear that he's named after a fish, and almost certainly after what Australians call a "toadfish" (all the "fish names" are Australian fish). One hardly needs a reference for that. And since the Toadfish page has changed, my original point doesn't matter anymore: we don't need to know the exact type of fish.

As you point out, without reliable references one shouldn't speculate, but I'm still sure there's a connection between the characteristics of the fish and the characteristics of the character. Stingray Timmins sounds like a troublemaker, for example. Tadpole Reeves just sounds young. "Gemfish" has a more positive sound, and I'm guessing that's a girl. There's something quintessentially Australian about the whole thing.

An interview with Anthony Engelman confirms that "Stonefish" was initially "an ugly name for an ugly character ... the stonefish is the deadliest fish in the sea ... lethal if the stonefish is stepped on" but doesn't discuss the other fish names except to say "the producers had no idea ... that they would be forced to come up with ... so many other fish names." -- Radagast3 (talk) 23:17, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Gemfish or Gemma is a female cousin of Toadie's, I don't think she was seen on-screen. Her mother's name is Coral, which is her actual name and not a nickname. I like your theory about the nicknames being linked to the characteristics of the character though.
