Which language?

Which language does this word come from? Badagnani 02:12, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is a Swahili woccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc.';lfplsls[ksdlfdslc[slc[x;zzzzc'\lxlxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx′rd. I don't know, but it may have its etymological origin in some other language. --Ezeu 20:43, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What's the Swahili word for the spoon they use? "Mwinko" or something like that? --In Defense of the Artist (talk) 03:03, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believi its 'Mwiko' Kimemia Maina (talk) 00:21, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ugali sounds very much like Swahili and is used as a term throughout the area, where S. is used as a lingua franca, also by people who always use their local language (different from S.) among themselves. "Spoon" in general is "Kijiko" in Swahili, if you ask, though that does not belong here. Ugali is not eaten with any sort of spoon anyway: traditionally Africans use their hand (the right one) (and water and sabuni are handed to guests before the dishes are served for that reason, so they can wash them before); I was equipped with kitchen knife and fork in the East African household where I lived for a year ("Peace corps sort of style") as a European.

The word is derived from Swahili. Hence, whoever wrote it as Kirundi word, she/he's not correct. The East African people knows the word as it is their own - and I don't even think if that is true the word is Kirundi. We need to prove it otherwise we have to remove the sentence which says "Ugali is Kirundi word" and add it as Ugali is Swahili word! Typically Swahili word and not Kirundi word.--Mwanaharakati(Longa) 07:02, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Possible duplicate

See: Pap (food). Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:23, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes IMO, it is a duplicate of Pap (food). Could we merge the two articles? Uwanja Talk to Me. Email Me. 13:28, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We can indeed merge if they are the same topics. Are we sure? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:48, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nshima? It also seems to be the exact same thing as ugali. Perhaps pick the one that is most common and merge them all into that one.41.204.145.13 (talk) 09:13, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

Hello! It seems like Nshima, Pap (food), Phutu, Sadza, Ugali, and Uphuthu are different names of a same dish. They perhaps should be merged.

  • Nshima article lists bugali, buhobe, chima, couscous de Cameroon, meliepap, milli pap, ngima, nguna, nsima, pap, poshto, saab, sadza, sakora, sakoro, sima, tuozafi, ubugali, ubwali, ugali, upswa, and xima as different names of nshima.
  • Ugali article lists arega, bogobe, bugali, buru, chenge, chima, dona, isitshwala, kaunga, kimnyet, kuon, kwon, mealie pap, mogo, ngima, nkima, nshima, nsima, obokima, obusuma, oshifima, pap, phuthu, posho, sadza, sembe, sima, and ubugali as different names of ugali.
  • Pap (food) article lists akamu, bogobe, isitshwala, mieliepap, nsima, ogi, phaletšhe, phuthu pap, sadza, ugali, and vhuswa as different names of pap.
  • Phutu article lists putu and uphuthu as different names of phutu.
  • Sadza article lists bogobe, isitshwala, nsima, pap, phaletšhe, ugali, and vuswa as different names of sadza.

I don't know much about African foods, and I hope someone conversant in the relevant cuisines could help. Thank you. --Herbeater (talk) 16:37, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, but what name would they be merged under? Park3r (talk) 13:24, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Currently Ugali has the most (19) interwiki links, followed by Nshima (5) and Pap (food) (5). So, perhaps "Ugali"? --Herbeater (talk) 18:23, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Both versions are used in the article. Would it increase clarity to adopt only one version for this article? Okro or Okra. 50.173.240.146 (talk) 15:17, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
