Mat-Su Career and Technical High School is a public secondary school in Wasilla, Alaska, United States. It is part of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District.[3] The school is focused on preparing students for postsecondary education and the workforce using branches of study called career pathways.[4]

History

Mat-Su Career Tech is the second-newest high school in the valley after Redington Jr-Sr High School.[5] The plan for the school was approved in 2003, and the original section opened to students for the 2007-2008 school year, starting with five career pathways.[6] In 2015, work was completed on a 33,000 square foot extension, allowing for the addition of three more pathways.[7]

Admissions

Students in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough seeking to attend Career Tech must complete an admission process which consists of an online application, a one-page prompt essay, and an interview with the school's principal or vice principal. Students are scored on their essay and interview quality as well as their grades and MAP scores.[8]

Academics

Mat-Su Career Tech's career pathways include Building, Business, Fitness, Health, Hospitality and Tourism, Human Services, Natural Resources, and Transportation. Students choose a pathway related to their profession of interest as if they were to choose a college major, except that these can be changed at relatively little cost. [9] There are no "traditional" electives such as art or band; the electives are centered around career pathways such as Industrial Safety and First Aid in Health, Technical and Architectural Drafting in Building, and Diesel Hydraulics in Transportation.[10][11][12][13]

Career Tech also has no athletics. Students can participate in sports and some electives at other schools.[14]

To graduate, students require 4 credits of Language Arts, 3.5 credits of Social Studies, 3 credits of Math, 3 credits of Science, 1 credit of Gym, 0.5 credits of Health, and 9.5 credits of electives.[15]

Activities

CTSO

Career Tech contains a variety of Career and Technical Student Organizations, groups typically found in vocational schools that aim to generate and develop important skills for the workplace in both the individual and community.[16] Career Tech's current CTSO's include BPA, HOSA, NTHS, and SkillsUSA.[17][18][19][20]

Academic Competitions

Career Tech participates in the Battle of the Books, Science Olympiad and Ocean Bowl.[21][22][23]

Student Government

Career Tech's Student Government coordinates school dances and other school-related events, as well as participates in community service.[24] It also sends a delegation twice a year to the Alaska Association of Student Governments (AASG) conference, a statewide meeting between student governments to discuss school, district, and state-related issues and opportunities.[25]

Enrollment

Mat-Su Career Tech has a higher percentage of freshmen than other grades, as enrollment for the 2019-2020 has increased to 730. [26][27] Career Tech is the least diverse high school in the Mat-Su Valley, with a 74.9 Non-Hispanic White population compared to 66.2-71.1% for other Valley schools, and the largest minority enrollment is Alaska Native.[28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]

52.1 percent of the student body is female, and 25.4 percent of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch. [36] The graduation rate is more than 95%, the highest in the state.[37]

Recognition

Mat-Su Career Tech has been rated by Niche as the best school in Alaska.[38]

COVID-19

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mat-Su Career Tech shifted to online learning in March 2020 after an extended spring break.[39] Career Tech reopened the following school year under the 2020 Alaska Smart Start, a set of COVID-19 processes issued by the Alaska Department of Education.[40][41] On October 14, 2020, a student at Career Tech contracted COVID-19, but school continued the following day. However, the school reported several more cases on October 16, 2020, leading to a 2-week building closure. The cases contributed to the highest weekly rate of COVID-19 the Mat-Su Valley had ever seen.[42]
