They returned to Korea in 2007, moving into the province of Gangnam, where Jaehyun's family still resides. He legally changed his name to Jung Yoon-oh when he was fourteen, before he became a trainee.

Jaehyun attended Shindong Elementary School and Shindong Middle School. In 2012, he was scouted by an SM Entertainment employee whilst on his way home from school, subsequently passing an audition at the company and becoming a trainee. Jaehyun graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in 2016, majoring in Broadcasting Arts.

On December 10, 2013, Jaehyun was announced as a new member of trainee project SM Rookies via their social media channels. He featured frequently on related content, such as videos on the SM Town YouTube channel and on the Korean reboot of Mickey Mouse Club, and was one of the SM Rookies on boy group EXO's Exo 90:2014. In January 2015, Jaehyun was announced to be a co-presenter of Show Champion with fellow rookie Doyoung, which he hosted weekly until July of the same year. He promoted as SR15B Jaehyun in dance and vlog-style videos throughout 2015.

The series was filmed in Fiji.

In January 2017, NCT 127 returned with the EP Limitless.[4] In June, the group released their third EP, Cherry Bomb.
