VN tx tags

VN tx tags are slowly being removed as progress is made; I assume it makes sense to do so. And there are plenty of one-line VN provincial capital city articles (at least 75% of them) that could be tagged as the extant VN tx category dwindles down. --Mr Accountable (talk) 15:26, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Check me if I'm wrong: (1) by looking at the map in the excellent Districts of Mekong Delta navbox, the complete districts of each included province are included in each provincial navbox section; no need for separate provincial district navboxes at this time (though a much more comprehensive navbox could emerge a ways down the road). (2) I am thinking to make Category:Mekong River Delta along the lines of other major heavily populated deltas; and since each delta province is more or less completely in the delta, one could simply place the entire province in the category w/o worrying about the very many individal districts. Along w/ major cities and gov't agencies like Vietnam Inland Waterways Administration. (3) Also thinking of Category:Red River Delta, it could be the only major delta of a "Red River" and might not need disambiguation with Red River Texas etc. Similar simple rules of district/province/major city inclusion could apply. The two categories could be squared away quite neatly and in quick time. --Mr Accountable (talk) 15:50, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, that template's really good, never mind whatever else I wrote about the district situation; just exactly the type of 'much more comprehensive navbox' I had thought of. --Mr Accountable (talk) 15:57, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
I will start to move the district pages. --Mr Accountable (talk) 19:30, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Using the full name for the district parses better in-article; as work and additions are done there should be a gradual improvement in the diction of the district articles. I'm starting with provinces in Category:Red River Delta. --Mr Accountable (talk) 19:39, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
You know, I started moving the districts in Red River Delta category, listening to the basketball game, and I comprehended that the idea was to use the VN name, as used in the VN article. If your'e looking through the already-moved-pages, I think I will go back and change the pages, it's quite simple to use the real name as the simple redirect works so well. --Mr Accountable (talk) 19:53, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I think I need to finish listening to one basketball game, and watching another, and then I will recommence, with the proper VN names. Providence College should really be able to get over at Rutgers, it's important for bracketology issues, PC's last game is at ranked team Villanova before the conference tournament. And there's also a nationally televised NBA game on American Broadcasting Company with local interest, Detroit and Boston. --Mr Accountable (talk) 20:08, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
This looks better: Category:Districts of Thai Binh Province. --Mr Accountable (talk) 20:46, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Progress: OK, all square with basketball, and working backwards in Category:Red River Delta, 3 province categories are completely named: Category:Ninh Binh Province; Category:Thai Binh Province; Category:Vinh Phuc Province. One of the cities/provincial capitals was already named to a district article. --Mr Accountable (talk) 21:13, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Mantis stub template

Greetings. You're apparently savvy about stub templates. Can you advise me how I'd go about replacing (or suggesting to replace) the pic in the {{Mantodea-stub}} template? The current pic just looks like a green rectangle when it's tiny, I think File:Large brown mantid white.jpg would look like a tiny mantis. Gracias. --Boston (talk) 23:37, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

VN regions

Checking here before going ahead and using proper VN regional geonomenclature to complete the subcategories for new Category:Regions of Vietnam. Provinces + major cities + government cruft + cultural items + .... --Mr Accountable (talk) 11:45, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Forward progress status report: of 5 regions in category, ] Mekong River Delta, Red River Delta, Tay Nguyen and Dong Bac regions are "districted". --Mr Accountable (talk) 15:16, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
I've run into a little trouble with the pagemoves I was doing yesterday - can you please look in at the WikiProject and see what's up with it? I thought the moves were cleared. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:11, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
I looked at the regional VN stub categories; I'll work on sorting those stubs. Though, I've never set up a stub category before, Red River Delta especially will have a lot of stubs, I'll be waiting on further stub category creation. --Mr Accountable (talk) 19:49, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
So what's going on with it? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:03, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, well, I may help out some more this afternoon. We'll see - I've got a couple of things to work up in userspace for later this month, too. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:13, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Glad to hear you're feeling better. OK, I'm going to do some more moving...hopefully it won't raise any more issues. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:32, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh! Almost forgot - you're going to want to change the category titles, I'm guessing. Remember that I can help you transfer articles with AWB when the time comes. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:35, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to leave Category:Districts of Hanoi for the time being - I don't know whether they should be listed as "{name}", {name} District" (like in the other provinces), or "{name}, Hanoi", like with other neighborhood articles. What would you say? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Same as above for Da Nang. Otherwise I'm done. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
OK. Now to do some retagging with AWB. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 00:02, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

I find King's storytelling nothing short of spectacular. I liked also the film versions of his books, The Shawshank Redemption, Dolores Claiborne and Misery being the best. Have you watched them? ShahidTalk2me 16:06, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Districts and Provinces

Is there a source that the official name is "X District" etc? People don't usually use "California State" "Tamil Nadu state" "Guangdong Province" etc, although for some reason everything in VN is tagged "Vinh Long Province etc". In the case of things like "District 1, Saigon", "5th Arrondissement, Paris" etc, the common nouns are needed but where do the Province and District come into most of the proper nouns. Hello! I'd appreicate your input to this discussion. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 08:07, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

You were spot on with your comment! And a quick search later reveals that Sophia Loren was an uncredited extra in the film. Expansion (albeit small), done. Lugnuts (talk) 12:25, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Retagging

I retagged a bunch of things with AWB yesterday - sorting German things for translation, basically. I'm happy to do more; just tell me what's needed, and when.

How are you doing? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:09, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

OK - I'll see what I can work on tonight, then. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:17, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
No - at the moment I've only retagged the things I tagged to begin with. There are still quite a lot to do. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:37, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
You can, sure - but I can save you a lot of trouble with AWB. And that would free you up to work on other things. Speaking of which...are you going to rename the Vietnamese provinces and then create new categories for them? AWB will help in transferring articles when you need to. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:40, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Whatever floats your boat. If you do, just tell me what needs tagging and what doesn't. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:45, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Right, then - I'll work on it tonight. Meantime I'm having some issues here, so I have to get a computer doctor to find out what's happening. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:06, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps - Lord knows I can understand that urge. Still, it's a pity to lose him. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:16, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

But of course. I have an engagement tonight, and most likely tomorrow night as well, but I'll do it ASAP. Probably later in the evening tonight, once I'm home. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:07, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I agree - it's great work you're doing. I'd be happy to help out, only I'm still having some computer issues today. We'll see what I can do later. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:09, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Invisible Barnstar
You are No.3 amongst Wikipedians as per the latest enumeration. The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 15:40, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! But they messed up the latest count. Check the November version I had 198,000 then and now have 225,000. For some reason they've now got me as 168,000. They seem to have added a version 6 months, Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:43, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Actually, they've replaced the latest count with the one made in June 2008. I was stunned to find that I was listed at 2,000+ with about 8500 edits.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 15:47, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
You have about 222,000, I guess. Well, by the way, how's life? I didn't message you all these days cause I did not want to trouble you considering the fact that pretty bad events had taken place recently-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 15:51, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, by the way, I was able to get that particular bloglink for Lakshmikanthan Murder Case, whitelisted. :-) And then, I'm nearing the 100 DYK mark. My enthusiasm in contributing is actually decreasing. I think I'll be quitting sometime within the next few months.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 15:55, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Look who's number 201! :-)
Sorry - didn't mean to disappear. I'm having terrific systems issues at the moment. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:01, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I surely am, thanks to AWB and my ham-fistedness in entering categories from time to time. The template looks good - it gets to something that I've long advocated, the creation of different-colored maps and templates for different countries. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:11, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Right - I may do some stubbing, too, once I've gotten a couple of projects taken care of. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:17, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree, it looks great.

OK, I've a big backlog to take care of, so I've got to set to it for a bit. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Doc, WP:EDITS is now back to the 25th Feb 2009 version, and I've taken the liberty of correcting your barnstar accordingly. WereSpielChequers 20:36, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it's nice to see the bots at work. Speaking of which...if you want to propose those other kinds (again, if need be), I'd be more than happy to back you in it. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:24, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Wish I could be of more help - alas, the backlog is still there. And I'm going to stick around later than usual to deal with it. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:38, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry - ended up getting home last night later than I expected. I might be able to do some tonight, though - hope that won't be an issue. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:29, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, we'll see how things go - I might be able to help out some today, depending on how things go. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:57, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah - 125 sounds about right. It's been warming up here, too; most of the snow has melted, by now. Vietnamese Wiki

You mentioned that your computer crashes when you try to visit the Vietnamese Wiki. Could you provide your operating system and browser information to see what we can do to fix this? DHN (talk) 18:55, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I'd like to know which operating system (and version number) you used, as well as the browser (and version number) you used to access Wikipedia, and which page the crash occurred in. DHN (talk) 19:02, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I assume that you're using the Windows XP operating system. Can you determine which version of Firefox you're using? (Open the help menu on top of the browser and select "About Mozilla Firefox", then copy the last line in the window that pops up. Mine currently says "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008120122 Firefox/3.0.5" DHN (talk) 19:07, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I know you had mentioned nominating this photo for FP a while back. I decided I liked it enough to do it myself. See Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Bareina. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:26, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I think this one's about 50/50. Technical quality could be better. Mostly sharpness is the problem. We'll see. Do you know about the new valued pictures program? This allows recognition of pictures that are valuable and encyclopedic but do not meet FP quality standards. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:36, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
No, that one doesn't have a chance. EV is low because it shows practically nothing about the city (all the buildings are black!) And sunset pictures would have to be ridiculously perfect to get FP because everyone loooooves taking phtoos of sunsets. Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:38, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Dear Dr Blofeld, I have written a message on talk page of a contributor who has added two text in japanese: アジャ・リンポチェ and mongol:Ажаа гэгээний танилцуулга at the end of the page Arjia Rinpoche I suspect that this contributor wanted to create the ja:アジャ・リンポチェ and uk:Ажаа гэгээний танилцуулга I am not sure this user sees his talk page as he only contributed twice Feb 7. Can you please try to see this, and copy and paste the added data to the japanese and mongol version where I am sure they will be able to see whether it is indeed wikipedia acceptable texts? Many thanks. --Rédacteur Tibet (talk) 21:26, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Core Contest Award

2008 Core Contest Winner Award
Let it be known that Dr._Blofeld was awarded First Place in the first Wikipedia Core Contest. This award is based on his outstanding work in starting and writing Deforestation in Brazil. Thanks for your hard work in making Wikipedia's core articles better. -Earthdirt (talk) 04:01, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou (but I actually "started" it from scratch too! Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:29, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Yeah, it has been awhile and it didn't seem that Matt Lewis or the organizers of the contest were ever going to make one of these so I went ahead and boldly made one and posted it even though I was one of the "winners" and it's kind of lame to give yourself a prize. Earthdirt (talk) 16:41, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
    • Absolutely, Proteins rocks for that. I wouldn't mind helping with another core contest. I personally think a lot of good came out of it despite the mess it turned into. Earthdirt (talk) 16:47, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I doubt it, I'm afraid - it's a great sunset shot, but not a very good photograph for Nouakchott, as you can't make out any of the individual buildings. Even so, looks like another one you suggested may make FP, and that's great. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:37, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh, absolutely, it is - incredible. Anyhow, I'll AWB those things for you in a bit, and then I've got a couple of things of my own to work on. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:31, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
They look great - do you want me to do some AWBing of talk pages? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:42, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Sure - I'll add 'em to the batch, then. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:55, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Starting now... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:41, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone are done - any other countries you need while I'm at it? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:01, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm ahead of you - I just did talk pages for whatever's in the category already. Anything else you haven't done I'll catch in another cleanup in a few minutes. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:26, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
All finished. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:52, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I'll do some more after dinner. I actually did a blow-by-blow comparison for Switzerland, and the two cantons I checked really don't need AWB; the German articles for those are pretty stubby, too. Now, German geostubs are another matter - those I think I'll work on some. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:03, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I'll give them another look, then. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:07, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
I know - I just thought it might be something that requires more by-hand sorting than semi-automated. Anyhow, as I say, I'll have another look after dinner and probably tag a few. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:08, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
I'll start with those, then.
Nope, nothing so exotic - I think I saw a roast beef waiting to be cooked in the kitchen, though I could be wrong. I had Burmese the other night, though - pickled bamboo with chicken. Very tasty. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:12, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
It's not quite the same, though - it's milder in many ways. Although the bamboo is very sour...still, I learned quickly to undercut the sour flavor with a little rice. They have mango pork at this place, too, but I've never tried it; I stick to either the bamboo or their black bean pork, which is excellent. A little spicy, but not too much. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:21, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Looks nice.
Weirdest thing I've ever eaten would have to be a grasshopper taco. Didn't care for it much; the grasshoppers were dusted in chili powder, which was too bitter for my liking. The accompanying cactus salad was good, though. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:56, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

He made one comment on my page and I made one comment here, nowhere else, and there is no way that I am under any impression that they are my articles. Take a look at the comment on my talk page below yours, User talk:CambridgeBayWeather#Map of Nunavut. What about using File:Canada location map.svg? Any new DYKs

Hi! Any new articles which can be nominated for a DYK?-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 06:59, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

That's okay! Do tell me when you write one-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 13:12, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Great! Max Penson is good. What sort of rewording? Max Penson is the guy's name, isn't it! I wrote an article on a village by name Sivapuram, 3 days back and nominated it for a DYK. There are still some articles for WP:INTN that need to be created. I'm also planning to revive WP:INOR-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 13:19, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, that's pretty cool! Bye! Good luck! I'm leaving now-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 13:30, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

I think I've more or less completed the rewrite of this section and would like a second pair of eyes on it. It replaces the two list-like sections that existed before, and now has non-blog citations for all the casting comments that were made. Fritzpoll (talk) 12:21, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Its looking a little better, funnily enough I was only thinking about that articles earlier and was going to ask how it was going. Would be usful to find some production notes on it though. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:24, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Heh, one section at a time! Frasier#Production will be rewritten soon! So far, beyond reorganising the article, I've only rewritten the Cast section Fritzpoll (talk) 12:28, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Argh! This page has some pretty detailed info, but isn't a reliable source - I've now spend £5.71 buying a used copy of the official companion ook to the series in order to get some notes. Fritzpoll (talk) 13:21, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Have you looked on Amazon to see if you can get hold of a cheaper copy of a Frasier guide? Sounds good anyway. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Delivery was free on this one, so it's all swings and roundabouts. Currently searching for interviews/transcripts, etc. Fritzpoll (talk) 13:28, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Cool. There might actually be something video related on it, the making of Frasier etc, behind the scenes dcoumentaries. Perhaps a DVD has it on a special features. I know I found the DVD behind the scenes videos immensely beneficial to thr FAs and GAs we have on Bond. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I have the first three series on DVD, but I'd like to find online transcripts. Are they acceptable sources for an FA article, do you think? Bearing in mind that I'll have few other possibilities for sourcing...? Fritzpoll (talk) 13:44, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Providing the transcipts are "official" and from a reliable site. The main problem is indeed finding reliable and detailed sources for articles like this, like with Bollywood the greatest content on the web is on fan related sites which are little more than blogs, with little professional credentials. Perhaps you might even think about emailing the production company. It might seem unusual to you but I wouldn't be at all surpised if you could get through to the producers by email and say you are writing an encyclopedia article on the series, could you please send by some information on production behind the scenes etc. Obviously there will be limits to how intimate the details they give you but I would think it likely they would be willing to help you especially as its wikipedia and it is providing information on "their series" in the media. A lot of organisations I'm sure would see providing information about their products on wikipedia as a positive thing. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:51, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Good thought - but what if I used the transcripts for the details, but cited the featurettes themselves (that is, the DVD extras) as the source? Fritzpoll (talk)

If they are cited in the DVD and you are sure the online transcripts are completely accurate and reliable I would go with that as for sure unreliable websites would be pounced on at FA. It is the primary source anyway, so go for that. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:25, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

What about one of File:Nunavut Qikiqtaaluk Region.png, File:Nunavut Kivalliq Region.png or File:Nunavut Kitikmeot Region.png? If the wording was removed and one colour, probably yellow but the light green and white similar to the southern Canada maps that you made, might work, especially if the overlay of North America could be added. Having said that I really not sure as to how it could be done and don't have the tools to do it. If that was possible then all of the Canadian locater maps could be the same. If you want to do them for some Spanish-speaking countries, I could help out with translations. I've decided that's what I should be doing more of on Wikipedia, because then I'm improving my language skills while i help wikipedia... Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:25, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I tried doing Costa Rican politicians, but a lot of them were colonial figures with esoteric titles neither I nor my boyfriend (who's from Spain) could figure out, so it got kind of boring. I think artists might be more fun. (Though I'd have to see how that vocabulary goes. Many art words seem to be cognates, but maybe I'd run into trouble.) I agree that we need to figure out how to do outreach and get more people involved in translation. I was thinking maybe of setting up pages like Wikipedia:Translation/Spanish for big languages, then spamming the people who are signed up (via userboxes) as translators, informing them of the new system. Maybe the talk pages (like Wikipedia talk:Translation/Spanish) could be a central place to ask for help with translation questions. Really the best place for editors would be all the people who are learning English throughout the world. (It's much better education to translate into a language you're learning than out of it.) Somehow if we could harness them as translators, we'd have an amazing army! Maybe I can ask my boyfriend's roommate (language and history teacher here in Cambridge, originally from Puerto Rico) if he knows any teachers back home that would be interested in such a project. BTW don't sweat the folks on ANI. As between these stubs and the tiny village stubs, I'd take (and I'm sure they'd take) these any day! :) Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:17, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Wow, that's a lot of work to do! Just noticed this page, also would be a good one to start stubs for. Hopefully in a few days I can start doing mass messaging for people who are signed up as translators, and perhaps for people who indicate they speak Spanish etc. I agree it's silly for people to criticize stub creation. When people say you're making work for others, that's simply false. The work has been there all along, they just didn't know it existed! I see you've fixed José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín, which is good. I did Rafael Ángel García this morning. Oh, and I relisted a modest bot request (automatically supplying the interwiki title parameter for the expand language templates) at WP:BOTREQ, and someone's actually doing it! Yay. I also created {{Expand other language}} for misc translation requests that don't merit their own tags and categories. (I found an old translation request for Papiamento orthology from Papiamento wikipedia, go figure.) I'm done for the day, and probably for a few days, because I have a paper to finish for school. Good luck with all the stub creation! Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh wait, i see José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín still isn't so good. It will be on my to-do list for later. Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:08, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

As you may have seen, I haven't left yet... :( I'll do the notifications soon. I'd like to have all the infrastructure in place first perfectly, though. Can you help clear out Category:Wikipedia featured articles in other languages? This project was kind of stupid, because they weren't discerning at all in what they tagged. For instance, why on earth should we be translating United Kingdom from Tamil? Most of the tags I'm just removing. some i'm replacing with our expand tags. When I do that I'm adding (or meaning to add) the parameter fa=yes so that they go into the respective FA categories. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:17, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if we should just remove them all. I guess we could ask on VP once the shitstorm dies down. I guess normally I wouldn't want to just dismantle a whole project like this, but it pretty much sucks and has no point. I think it will take longer to go through and evaluate all the ones currently tagged than starting from scratch with a list of FAs in other languages. Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:51, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I've suggested the bot removal of the FAOL tags at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 108#Bot detagging of Category:Wikipedia featured articles in other languages - a good idea?. Comment there if you'd like. I've come around to your view that sorting through them is more trouble than it's worth. Better just to go to each wiki's list of FAs and start from scratch. New message

Hello Blofeld, I need to ask you a quick question. Kareena Kapoor was recently featured on Filmfare Magazine's annual Power List, where she was the only woman on the list and was ranked at number 10. So far, this is what I am planning to add on her article: "During March 2009, Kapoor became the only woman to be featured on Filmfare Magazine's annual "Power List", a list of the 10 most powerful people of Bollywood." Since there isn't an article for this list like there is for Time 100 & Celebrity 100 [where people can click on the link to see what the list is all about], I was wondering whether adding the "bolded" part of the text was necessary or not. Please let me know what you think. If you have another way of rephrasing the text, please let me know as well. Regards -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 18:15, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Don't bolden it. I would put it in italics. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:16, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

LOL.. You misinterpreted my question. I was saying that since not many people know what the list is about, I was wondering if this part of the text [a list of the 10 most powerful people of Bollywood, which I also referred to as the "bolded" part] was necessary to add on Kapoor's article. =D -- Bollywood Dreamz talk 18:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Doesn't need boldening. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:25, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Mass-production of low-quality one-liners

I seriously question the usefulness of what you are doing in producing all these "articles" with nearly no content, or in the whole idea of translating articles of usually low quality from other Wikipedias rather than aiming at getting better and referenced articles from the outset. As the discussion linked above seems to have been closed, I am going to raise the issue at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy). --Hegvald (talk) 18:21, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Seriously disagreed with both opinion and disrespectful attitude. Everybody does whatever they can. Not everybody has expertise, desire or boldness to write articles about Geroge Bush or pornstars or pokemon. "Nearly no content" is better than no content. Writing new articles is a way better attitude than raking tens of thousands of edit counts with semiautomated tools. Dr. Blofeld, if ever someone starts bugging you at serious forums, please let me know. I don't want to waste time on a single opponent, but I will say a word or two in general discussion. - 7-bubёn >t 00:34, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Lithuanian bios

In response to you message in my talk page I translated one page, Liudas Vilimas. However, please know that while working on lithuanian surnames and bios I noticed that the threshold of nonability in Lithuanian encyclopedia is rather different from that of the English one. And this is quite reasonable when comparing the numbers of Anglophone and Lithuanian populations (kind of 100x). Hovewer you must pay attention to notability/verifiabilty while porting bios from lt: into en:. May I suggest you to do quick google checks. Otherwise the pages you created will be easy prey for AfD: deletionism and perfectionism is on the rise, for better or worth. - 7-bubёn >t 00:43, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Uh, I did do google checks, there were a number I didn't start from lithuanian wiki. Yes I can see that the Lithuanian encyclopedia look *very* detailed. Usually though if an artist has had works displayed in a national museum or gallery or has beenn involved internationally also this is a criteria for notability of artists. I ignored the ones I felt were not suitable for english wikipedia but as I say I don't understand Lithuanian so it was difficult to judge from initial content. ANI

My advice? Don't worry about it. There will always be critics, and there's nothing you can do about it. But as long as the majority on here agree with what you're doing, I see no reason to discontinue it.

Anyhow, here's what I've been working on for the past few days: Locust Grove (Dillwyn, Virginia). My great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather's house. I have a couple of photos to add in a bit. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:49, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah - like I told you, two of mine were speedy-tagged yesterday. One was kept; I had to reconstruct the other. I know it's frustrating, but like I said - don't worry about it.
Re: the house - I'm actually surprised by how little information is available online. Usually Virginia's NRHP nominations are a bit more extensive. I don't know much more than what's in the article; I assume it's 18th century because presumably Peter built it, and he wasn't even here before 1765. It's been very nicely restored; I have a photograph of what it looked like before, too. An absolute wreck. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:37, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey

Please see this discussion, Blof. It's very important. ShahidTalk2me 16:33, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for replying, but what completely strikes me as odd is what Yobmod said. He says he wants to know if generally FU images are permitted in BLPs or not because too many FAs like Diane Keaton and Cillian Murphy use them, and I don't know if I got it right, but does he actually suggests to take them all (or just Zinta) to FAR to get a broader number of opinions??? ShahidTalk2me 16:50, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
As I said, I also agree with that claim that we must have consistency. It's not the problem now though, the FAC was promoted with all these images being included and with BK's oppose standing there for Raul and Sandy to see, so either all the images remained or removed. The problem is the inclusion of FU images in FACs in general, and I don't know if I got it right, but does he actually suggests to take them all (or just Zinta) to FAR to get a broader number of opinions??? ShahidTalk2me 16:57, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
So what do you think? Did I get it right or he really intends to take them all to FAR? He says:
"I don't want this article to be demoted, just find out what consensus is... RfC maybe less drama, but i think a FAR is more likely to get input from a wider variety of people. I found this article from the Tolkien FAR, which has similar issues, and seems to be being opposed based on the images..."
What does he suggest? ShahidTalk2me 17:17, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Well spotted. I could not stop laughing. Hey I'm exhauted, see the change on the Filmfare Best Actress Award page!! ShahidTalk2me 20:31, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello Dr B. I have mixed feelings about this. I guess I would prefer not to see any more. Sorry. Lack of time, and I work kind of slowly - would like to think that it's because I feel the need to either vet them myself or AGF of an editor I know well. The LT project is in general short on resources...but maybe someday the stubs will get filled out. If I have any image upload questions, can I turn to you? Novickas (talk) 16:20, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Kathmandu

Hi there. You have contributed to Nepal-related articles. Have you been to Kathmandu? 202.79.40.131 (talk) 16:59, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately no. I think it is one of the most beautiful countries on earth, Bhutan also from what I've seen in pictures. I am just putting these places on the map hoping that people in Nepal such as yourself can expand all of the VDC articles!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:44, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Hopefully you will come to Nepal someday. Unfortunately, I don't edit Nepal-related articles! If you were to look at my contributions of my main account, you will not believe that I am from Nepal. I am more interested in what is going on the other side of the earth. Here in Kathmandu we have 1.5 million people. Most of them are young and English Wikipedia is becoming quite popular. Two years ago, not many people used Wikipedia. Now most college going young people use it for various purposes. Thanks you very much for you comment :) 202.79.40.131 (talk) 17:59, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Sounds promising. Perhaps one day there will be enough Nepali users on here to develop the articles to their full potential. I did have a book on Newar history for Christmas, I'll get around to seeing if I can create a few articles on it when I have time. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:10, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Newar history? I am not a Newar and I know more about California history than Newar history :) :)
I was introduced to English Wikipedia by a friend. I was involved with local wikis before. Here colleges give instructions in English language and more people are intrested in improving their English. And more people are using the internet. So, hopefully there will be more Nepali users contributing to Nepal-related articles.
You and Everyking are two people who are interested in developing articles related to developing countries. That's admirable. It is 12:12 AM here. It is time for me to go to bed. It was great talking to you. Good night! :) 202.79.40.131 (talk) 18:28, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou nice meeting you. User:Mr Accountable also does a lot of work on developing countries. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:32, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

More VN

Well, I'm up, it's the 4th inning of a preseason Red Sox game on the radio, perfect environment for rote work on the Wiki, little tired from working on Category:Provinces of Rwanda and for cities of DRC, including trying and failing to figure out which provinces are new, old, valid, newly replaced, etc. I'm sure someone more prescient than I will be able to organize the categories if I cannot.... I make maps myself on GIMP, including editing maps on which the names are too small, viz those of Regions of Mali which need it. --Mr Accountable (talk) 18:47, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Wonder if 202 has an idea of how to categorize the Brahmaputra River. --Mr Accountable (talk) 18:52, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Flags and stuff

Hi, just saw a bunch of your created articles. And no, for a change I don't disagree with you, I have no objections to small stubs. Although Jānis Fridrihs Baumanis is much better than the original of Vilmantas Marcinkevičius which was almost a candidate for speedy deletion.
I just removed a flag from the infobox on Flavio Herrera, per WP:Mosicon flags are discouraged from there. I think the same recently counts for film articles. The current consensus seems to be to no flags in infobox film. (I saw you created a bunch of film articles lately). Garion96 (talk) 19:08, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

OK but flags are the least thing on my mind at present. I was under the impression if you use the flag template those who dislike flags can have the option in their preferences to hide the flags. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:12, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

It's not as important as other stuff, but it is still the MoS. Regarding preferences, might be, but that only works for logged in users, not the "normal" reader. Either way, since you create so many articles it is easier to not add them then for someone to remove them later. Garion96 (talk) 19:21, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Ideally every new article I create would be like Charles Rufus Morey but there is only so much time I have to try to get these articles on their way. Of course I'd like every new article to be fuller, but there are many thousands of articles to be transwikied which will eventually be of great benefit to english wikipedia once they get traffic and people interested in them try expanding them. Creating them like Jānis Fridrihs Baumanis with a least some starter info is probably the best way to do it though. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:40, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree, Jānis Fridrihs Baumanis is a good stub and improves Wikipedia. I am still not convinced on these expand tags though, but I guess we'll see how it works out. Just don't use any flags. :) Garion96 (talk) 21:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps this might make you feel a little more comfortable with it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:46, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps, but it's too early to tell. I have no doubt that some editors will see the notice and improve the article. But I am not sure it weighs against the countless of readers who will see a huge tag on an ok article. I have already seen some quite decent long articles tagged with two of these tags, where it was unneeded. I am watching what will happen with them. I will let you know in a month or so. :) Garion96 (talk) 22:01, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Image requests

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I sent out requests for the images you requested but haven't heard any responses yet. It seems I've hit a wall, I must have over 20-30 pending requests for various people and so far nothing. I'll let you know if I hear anything. By the way, I just nominated Clint Eastwood filmography for FLC. Since I know you've been interested in Clint Eastwood-related material in the past, just thought I'd let you know if you want to take a look to see if you noticed anything missing/grammar issues. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 00:09, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I was feeling good a month ago when I was getting non-stop responses. I haven't been sending out any other responses recently since I've been focusing on other projects, including Toy Story. I feel old after seeing the release date of the film but still remembering the details of the film! I remember seeing it in theaters and being amazed. I'm planning on renting it just for the nostalgia. And the special features for the article... --Nehrams2020 (talk) 20:50, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't remember seeing those in theaters, but I have seen all of them on TV/VHS/DVD. I think the first film I remember seeing in theaters was Aladdin (pretty good memory for being five years old!). That's why I keep a list of all of the films I've ever seen so I can remember the great films I've seen and what I still need to see. I really need to keep working backwards and catch up with the classics. I'm in a Clint Eastwood phase right now and have watched quite a bit over the last month or so. So many films, so little time. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 21:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
He's definitely become one of my favorite actors (as well as directors). I'm currently waiting on The Outlaw Josey Wales in my Blockbuster queue. After seeing a few of his films, I was thinking of working on his article, but it looked like it needed a lot of cleanup and I didn't have the book sources I wanted to fix it. Instead, I worked on his filmography list, and hopefully it reaches FL soon. I may revisit his article in the future. I've only seen one or two of John Wayne's films, so I'll definitely need to take a look down the line. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 21:14, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
I watched all of the Dirty Harry films when they were shown on AMC a few weeks ago (thanks to my DVR!). I'll definitely need to add those to my DVD collection at some point. Gran Torino had me laughing at nearly every line he said, and really enjoyed his growls in the film. I've only seen Casablanca, so I have a lot more to see of Bogart's work. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 22:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I just started the page Wikipedia:Translation/Overhaul. You can edit it or add needed tasks if you'd like. Calliopejen1 (talk) 00:09, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I haven't been doing much substantive translation at the moment, just slowly making my way through the godawful WP:ECHO tag mess. I just left a new bot request here - what do you think of this idea? Calliopejen1 (talk) 15:16, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Geog divisions of VN

Well basically all the maps down to the commune maps can be seen here at this census website. I had a gmail chat with DHN which I can forward with some details on how to coordinate the bot. The commune stats are definitely there, area and popn for each commune - unfortunately not already in a table format. Genghiskhan (talk · contribs) likes to create lots of articles on geog settlements on vi.wiki (he usually doesn't bother logging in there, but most of the geo articles on vi are by him) and he can write English as well although he spends less time here nowadays. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Here is the gmail chat transcript. He agreed for me to print it. I cut out his real name though. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
  • me: do you know where all the population data for the communes used on vi.wiki comes from
  • DHN: not sure

10:48 AM if you want an authorative source, use the gov't website

 the gis application
  • me: that interactive map doesn't seem to have commune level stats
 does it
it isn't working for me atm
  • DHN: last time I checked it does

10:49 AM me: can you look at it for me

it basically doesn't work on mine
 takes ages anyway
  • DHN: seems really slow

10:51 AM see the "lop truy cap" dropdown box?

 choose Phuong/Xa

10:52 AM seems to work fine

it highlights the commune in the province and provide demographic info
 choose a province first
  • 10:56 AM me: did that
set it to phuong but I get the pictures of districts
  • 10:57 AM DHN: click somewhere in the map
  • 10:58 AM me: with the "i" choice?
 mode
  • DHN: yes
  • 10:59 AM me: it works now
  • DHN: when I select Phuong/xa mode, I see each commune colored differently in the map
me: wonder why it didnt last onth
all the data in a list
  • DHN: dont' think so, seems to be just an installer for the Java VM

11:05 AM you can also use the search function to find all the communes without having to click on each on the map 11:06 AM if you leave it blank it'll list all the communes 11:08 AM me: oh ok

I still have to click on all of them 1 by 1 though
  • DHN: yeah

11:09 AM me: it's still faster though

  • DHN: you can get someone to write a screenscraper to get all the info into a data file
maybe if I spend some time on it I might be able to do it

11:10 AM but it'll be faster if you can find a perl coder to help you

 and then it does?
  • DHN: no

11:26 AM only some numbers work

that's why if you write a perl program to do that, you'd be able to parse all the info in no time
  • 11:29 AM me: do you mind if I pass this discussion on to Blofeld and his bot consultant?
  • DHN: yeah

11:30 AM go ahead

  • me: on wiki?
I can cut the real name if you want
  • DHN: go ahead
me: ok
  • DHN: PROVINCENAME is the name of the province in lowercase, with no space

11:31 AM example of a correct page: http://gis.chinhphu.vn/MoreInformation.asp?pLayerId=angiang_pxa&pObjectId=2846

all the pages have the same format
just need to parse each field

11:33 AM but you can't just use any number. If the number doesn't work, it will give you a different type of page. We just ignore those pages.

So by going into phuong/xa mode, and by searching with a blank, it will list all the communes and you can go trhough and click to expand each of them without moving the map, which is really slow. However, DHN thinks a computer can autoextract them somehow. YellowMonkey (click here to vote for world cycling's #1 model!) 02:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

what I revert did not revert major of your changes, I did not remove pin point maps , i merely change the other maps and the size. i do not think guangzhou.png is better than chinaguangdongguangzhou.png or shenzhen.png to chinaguangdongshenzhen. It's better to have accurate size of prefecture city than or wrongly colored in like those of guangzhou.png.

I appreciated On overall changes you made as you did alot of updates in to city-info bar.--Lennlin (talk) 04:49, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

British Columbia location/regional district map

Please do not use this map further for location-maps for BC places/items, it's the wrong projection and the results are wildly mispaced as a result. I've spent the last hour or so removing the map from about half the articles you placed it on, there's still many left but I'm getting tired/irritated from having to do this. Please know what you're mapping before making maps for it, please; and for landforms especially geographic/terrain maps are far more suitable; nobody in British Columbia thinks in terms of regional district boundaries; only wikipedians from elsewhere seem to think they're relevant but within BC they're not, no moreso than electoral district or forest district boundaries; they're not like counties and shouldn't be used that way.Skookum1 (talk) 16:15, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Your're getting tired/irritated from having to do this? You have no idea. I'm thinking EXACTLY the same about the treatment I also get from people on here. All you had to do it revert the Location map British Colombia. You;ve now spent an hour wasting your time when you could have restored the old map or coporect the coordinates in two second flat. Yes - it would be nice. My interest at the moment, though, is achieving some kind of parity with other languages. Operatic coverage needs a lot of work - I used the template and stubbed Donna Diana the other day, and just look at what that's like in German. One of the more important operas of its day, and it's taken this long to get it on the English Wikipedia. *sigh* There's still a lot to do for Scandinavian opera, for instance. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:42, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Broken automatic(?) edits

Whatever you tried to do with edits like this one and that one, it didn't work ("The district capital lies at [[ ]]"). --Conti| 21:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Isn't there a way to add the full data in one go? Having incomplete sentences in article-space isn't exactly a good thing. But as long as those get fixed soon, I won't complain too much. :) --Conti| 21:35, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

If certian people were willing to run bots -yes. This sort of thing should be added by a bot. Having referenced data in a few days time will certainly be exactly a good thing though. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:36, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Blofeld - do you have an excel spreadsheet with the data? You can use fancy excel functions to autogenerate full articles, even without a bot. I've done this in the past. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:41, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

No I don't have a speadsheet unfortunately. Just trying to agian do a clean up job which should be done by bot. We really need to do a thing about bots on here as the priorities often seem all wrong. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:43, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Is all your data coming from that one website? Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:44, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

All the data is coming from one page here. This is why I'm miffed at doing it manually when "I know" it could be done very quickly with something a uto-assisted. Basically there are 500 and something articles needing this data inserted into text and in the infbox. SO far I've done about 60 odd. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:45, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Is your email enabled? I'll send you a spreadsheet that will let you generate the entire pages automatically. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:48, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

The articles already exist. Just need the data and referencing and expanding! Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:49, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

All of them? In any event, you need to learn how to do this for later! It's probably faster even to paste over all the currently existing articles than manually plug in the #s. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:50, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh I don't know I've already made a ton of edits to add things like infoboxes, the Vietnam transaltion templates. I'm also making districts maps so far I've made 47. By all means email it to me but I'm not very good with anything computer tech like that as surprising it may seem. Most of them though require exactly the same edit though. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:54, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Could you do it for me? Problem is a fair number already have lists of communes in. Most though have only the infobox in and no data as yet. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:54, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Okay, well it doesn't seem like I can email you attachments through the tool, but I just sent you a more or less empty email so you can email me and I can reply. See User:Calliopejen1/sandbox for what you can create pretty much just by copy/pasting one thing. Oh, do all of these articles have interwikis? And are the VN articles named consistently? If so, what are they? Will help me improve my templates. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:09, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I've replied. hopefully I can speed up the process! Hmmm yes the articles are mostly named consistently but they are not in the Vietnamese diuretics and have the word "DIstrict" after them. Remember though a fair number already have the lists of communes in. I don't want to overwrite any on Kiên Lương District for sintance. Also remember the area figure is km2 not square miles!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I meant the naming in Vietnamese wiki. Is it just the name of the district (without "District"), with diacritics? (Not diuretics - be careful!) I've fixed the template that had the sq mi problem. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:22, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah thats right though. Could you do this task for me? So far I've added data to The Cnetral Highl;ands region and Template:Districts of Mekong Delta as far as Kien Gang -Kien Hai. You can view the templates at Category:Vietnam district templates Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:24, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I think this is too tedious for me, so I think i'll have to decline. Did you get my email? Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:32, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah I don't get it. I have no idea to make a spreadsheet using data. I have no idea how you would convert or copy the data on that site into a spreadsheet and also how I could make it work, it sounds like a bot to me. Yes this task is very tedious indeed and its not just the population I'm adding! I'll get it done manually after some hard work. I know where I am then. Dr. Blofeld White cat 22:34, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Excel template tutorial

Okay I'm starting the explanation from scratch. Hopefully you can understand what I've done here, because this will make all your editing much, much easier. You don't need a bot to do this, just excel. (A bot would paste these articles into Wikipedia, but you'll have to do it manually.)

So my first step was to create a master article template. See User:Calliopejen1/VNdistrict. This is just based off of one of your articles. Wherever there is something that changes by article, I put in a variable (not sure if this is the technical term but whatever) that can be changed. These go in triple brackets like {{{this}}}. Don't worry yet about how you would make one of these master articles - I can help you later if you need.

Okay, so next, after I had made the article I went through and looked at all the variables I had used and made a helpful little template generator thing I put at the bottom of that article. It looks like this.

{{subst:User:Calliopejen1/VNdistrict
|districtname=
|provincename=
|population=
|capital=
|stubname=
|VNarticlename=
}}

This allows you to generate the whole article just by filling in those parameters and pasting that code in an article.

But of course it would be much faster if instead of filling in the parameters youself, Excel does it for you. That's where the spreadsheet comes in. The spreadsheet essentially just generates little blocks of code like

{{subst:User:Calliopejen1/VNdistrict
|districtnamewithoutaccents=A Luoi
|districtnamewithaccents=
|population=38616
|area=1229
|capital=A Luoi
|VNarticlename=
}}

and

{{subst:User:Calliopejen1/VNdistrict
|districtnamewithoutaccents=An Bien
|districtnamewithaccents=
|population=147297
|area=466
|capital=Thu Ba
|VNarticlename=
}}

that can be pasted to make articles. Do you see these in the fifth column?

The command I used to create these looks very complicated but really isn't too bad. It's

=CONCATENATE("{{subst:User:Calliopejen1/VNdistrict",CHAR(10),"|districtnamewithoutaccents=",A2,CHAR(10),"|districtnamewithaccents=",CHAR(10),"|population=",B2,CHAR(10),"|area=",C2,CHAR(10),"|capital=",D2,CHAR(10),"|VNarticlename=",CHAR(10),"}}")

Concatenate just means put these things next to each other, and CHAR(10) just means line break. The variables are A2, B2, C2, and D2. By dragging one cell down the spreadsheet, Excel replaces them with A3, B3, C3, and D3 (etc) so that you have all your nice little pre-made articles to paste.

Do you understand this any better now? Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:54, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh and one more thought - to get the data in excel, all I did was copy-paste from the website. Excel can generally divide things into columns and rows as needed. Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:56, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

RE: American films

To be honest I'm also a little surprised at how people make such a fuss over the American films template, when there is apparently no problem with using the likes of {{CinemaofHongKong}} in a Hong Kong film article (or any number of other such examples). Dunno what to say to be honest; ultimately I think having a "see also" link is the way forward, but it's just a case of doing it isn't it? AFAIK the template won't be deleted until the links have been removed from the 3000 or so articles that use it, but don't quote me on that. Regards. PC78 (talk) 16:13, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

There's a ton of stuff to migrate over here

Sometimes I just open a category at random in another Wiki - it's frightening how much, still, is left to start migrating over. I'll work on it some more tonight and hopefully add a few more things. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:29, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

It's OK - I'm not big on structured things, to be honest. I'm more of a transfer-as-you-go type. Thanks for the ones you've done - it's a big help towards finishing coverage. (Although I've actually got two or three to stub that aren't in the Finnish Wikipedia, either, so we can make things even more complete over here.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:20, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks. I can probably take care of a fair number with AWB, actually...let me work on it tonight. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:22, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah - there is that. Anyhow - if you think a WikiProject could be made out of it, why don't you propose one and see where it gets you? Couldn't hurt to formally get more people on board. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:52, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Tell me about it. I may have to give it up for the sake of my health. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 01:07, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Empty templates

I noticed you created some empty navboxes about Bulgarian municipalities, such as Template:Tutrakan. Could you fix them, or indicate a source that I could use to fix them myself ?(I would transliterate the "Villages" part from Bulgarian Wikipedia, but I have no idea what standard to use).Baltaci (talk) 23:15, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

I tried to fix the template mentioned above. The site doesn't work for me either, but luckily most of it was already cached by Google. There is a problem though: they seem to use a nonstandard transliteration. For example, the ж in Pozharevo is transliterated as "j", which doesn't appear as a valid transliteration in any of the systems used for the Romanization of Bulgarian (this is just an example familiar to me, there may be other nonstandard transliterations). Plus, there's the problem of the linking. For villages names that are found in both Bulgaria and other countries, I just appended ", Bulgaria" to the title, but I'm not sure what to do with the ones that are all in Bulgaria, but in different oblasts. Should I append ", <province_name> Province" or just ", <province_name>"? Baltaci (talk) 13:32, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Any DYKs

Hi! Any new DYK articles?-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 14:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Not really, grunt work I'm still doing. I did start a few articles though like Mining in Venezuela using PD material. It could probably be expanded an referenced for a DYK, I'm pretty busy though at present with geo templates and stubs. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:29, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Indonesian locator maps

Good morning, Herr Doktor. How are you - apparently working on Vietnam now. I haven't been very active lately, and then I decided to give a helping hand for an effort of cleaning some >1,000 copyvio pages. Regarding the maps: I think I'll rather do new versions for locator use, without latitude/longitude lines and labels. Also the inset (larger area map) should show much smaller region, as then it would be clearer where in Indonesia the islands are. I still have the command files and data left, so there is no extra effort required. – Sadalmelik 08:17, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Indian Highways

Yes, your work will be of help for me. Thanks! :) BTW, I am Helen... Paalappoo (talk) 13:08, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

I am from Thiruvananthapuram, not Wales. Helen is a common name in areas which have British influence in their culture. I know it is a popular name in Wales.
I don't have any pictures of the highways. Most of the details about highways and the places on the way have been gathered from people I work with. I am lucky to be working in a group of people from across the country. Paalappoo (talk) 13:27, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

The surname is so because of the naming convention in my part of the country. Usually, the father's given name is added to the child's given name. After marriage, most ladies remove the father's name and add their husband's given name. I still stick on to my father's name, Thomas. Paalappoo (talk) 13:35, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

My internet connection is an office-provided one. Practically everything is firewalled. I don't have access to flickr. In commons, I did'nt find any, except for Siliguri and Darjeeling. But those were removed by someone who edited the article. I have added pics in NH 43 Paalappoo (talk) 13:41, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Bulgarian templates

Greetings! My exams were quite successful if considering the small amount of time I spent studying :):) I am trying to fill templates but the progress is slow because as i explained in the talk page of Baltaci, many villages have the same name, others have names used in foreign countries, other have names of towns and so on. I hope that together we will cope with them. Regards, --Gligan (talk) 13:20, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

If you build it...

Yeah - I've always been in agreement with you on that. Anyhow, sorry I've been absent these past few days, but I've had a ton of work to do. And I was out yesterday evening - and I'm going to be again tonight. On the plus side, I should be available all tomorrow afternoon, at which point I'll probably do some transwiki-ing. Anything you need me to AWB? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:37, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure - don't see why I wouldn't be able to do something like that for you. I'll take a stab at starting some of them tonight and see where I can go from there. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:51, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Now, look. I've heard that I'm big as a house, but I think it's a bit thick to imply that I'm as large as a Colombian municipality...
(Sure, I'll start inputting them tonight.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:05, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Not a giant, exactly, no... --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:09, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, I was about 200 lbs or so, last I weighed myself. And I'm not 6 ft., either; I'm about 5'7 or so (that's what's on my driver's license, at least). So I could stand to lose some of it. The word I like for describing it is "paunch", which is sadly missing from the current American vocabulary, I think. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:29, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Average it may be, but I don't really wear it that well. The word "dumpy" comes to mind when I think of my body type.
Ah, well. Back to work - I need to get some of this stuff knocked out by the end of the day. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:54, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Excellent - looks good. I have laundry to work on, and then I'll get to work on AWB and such things. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:02, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I quite agree - it's nice to see things like that as they develop. Anyhow, I think I shall stub a few more Danish composers from the Danish Wiki, and then AWB those Colombian municipalities. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:01, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
OK - moving stuff like that isn't really something AWB would be good for. But I'll go ahead and start doing the moving myself. Then I can replace "district" with "District" in the text using AWB. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:12, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Moving's done - I'll work on the templates and things after dinner. (They need redirecting, after all...and there's the names to AWB to capitalize.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Yep - I'm doing that now. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 23:03, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, I think I've caught them all. I'm off for a bit - I'll do some more stuff tonight. (I want to get those Danish composers up to 60 stubs to properly populate the category.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 23:21, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I am just of the realisation that I have libelled you horribly at someones talk page regarding your bali maps - hey BTW thanks for them! - and dont mind me - the long white beard has been removed - the hair is back to very short but the mo is still with me - trust your hair is all still there - have a good week SatuSuro 13:36, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Greetings! I've asked user User:Sadalmelik to even create ones for the smaller islands. So far I've created Category:Indonesia location map templates. Sometimes I'll get around to starting lots of towns in the Indonesian islands. Regards, Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:39, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

I have been having very serious discussions with doseia (or close to that) whatever about making sure WP:RS or whatever are added for the islands that he/she whatever keeps adding - the potential for hoax/fraud island arts is very high due to the sheer number - and I must admit to questioning the ineluctable progressions towards comprehensive listing of the buggers (ie obscure islands and places) at http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Indonesia&action=edit&section=14 - oh well another day at the coal face :( SatuSuro 13:54, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Well it is a country, it has "some" notable places. Regencies of Indonesia should definately be started, you can't argue against their inclusion on wikipedia. Why not just let it progress gradually? I'd be willing to bet there are hundreds of missing places which have information in english and could be written beyond empty unreferenced sub stubs. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:05, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah Ill grant you that - I have no real probems really with any regencies at all (I have a subpage to fix some - just as long as we dont get too many villages and reefs in there :) SatuSuro 14:17, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Well a high proportion of my time is actually spent cleaning up and referencing and adding infoboxes/maps to existing articles these days on districts and places to spend too much time creating a bunch of useless hamlets. I am ploughing my way through Vietnam still adding 540 references to all with data for starters. Some time I'll get around to cleaning up existing articles and adding infoboxes to Indonesian places and hopefully improve upon any mess any has already created. Would still be nice though to add a couple of new articles on smaller towns, if there is something reliable to say about them. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:20, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

If I dig deep enough I think there will be some notable villages in Indonesia in a few places :) SatuSuro 14:58, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes in Bali and Lombok where I've been there are villages which specialise in certain crafts and customs etc and you can be damned sure you could write something encyclopedic about them. But those regencies are first priority when I get around to it... Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:22, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

How are you???? ShahidTalk2me 11:27, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh OK fine... WOWWWW she's hot!!!
One thing that made me feel very bad recently is this clip of Preity's new film.... Put it on 8:00... I was shocked and depressed to see Preity abused in this way. It's terrible. What do you think? ShahidTalk2me 11:48, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Actually the critic who criticised her was actually for this film. I mean, he praised her acting, but citicised Bollywood films basing his views on pure streotypes without even being aware of Zinta's body of work in India (after all it's a Candian film and the critic is Canadian). That's what made me angry. He wrote, "Preity Zinta, a big star in India, specializes in seemingly dozens of fluffy Bollywood crowd-pleasers in which her chief tasks are to look pretty and lip-synch convincingly. Her performance here is a revelation, infusing her role with surprising depth and pathos."
What do you think of this comment? Is it good or bad? ShahidTalk2me 12:00, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

I can do that, but it will take a while; more of my efforts are directed at filling out the year-in-poetry lists, and I tend to concentrate first on the larger lists, which are already mostly on the English Wikipedia. Creating the Swedish list was really more of a way of taking a bit of a break from that, so you can expect me to do some more, but it will probably take a while. -- Reconsideration (talk) 13:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh well more lists :( - but hey thanks! for at least tagging them with the project template - that really is appreciated :) SatuSuro 01:32, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - it is a much more level playing field after what you have done - i think in the end there will be a lot of positive things that will come out of it - oddly enough - there will be a coverage that will reduce hoaxes and some other things as there is something to refer to that is on wiki. I am very hopeful it is the way to go SatuSuro 12:58, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Hiya

Sorry for not having communicated in a while. You'd be surprised just how many articles there are out there that weren't apparently known about. I just in the past few days found out about 3 books of the Bible (well, a Bible), I'd never heard of before, the Meqabyan books. I've been trying to tag what I think of as being all the "top" importance articles for the various Christianity projects, and, well, that article probably has to count as one of them. Otherwise, generally OK, other than finding a few more regretably self-centered noobs out there. But that's par for the course, I guess. John Carter (talk) 15:24, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Work restrictions have become a bit more of a factor than they were before. And it looks like I'm going to have to do a bit more writing, which involves spending a lot of time in dry old libraries finding obscure books, particularly ones on Scientology and the like. But some of the more, well, highly-charged content has to get addressed by someone, and it's kinda clear that the number doing it right now ain't quite enough. As long as I can avoid too many people with a personality similar to that of someone I don't think I have to name, the health per se shouldn't be as much of a factor. Heyy

Blofffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff why are you vandalising my page LOL? ShahidTalk2me 16:46, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

I DID... REALLY!!! It was great!! Oh I thought I told you, but I forgot hehehe!! ShahidTalk2me 16:58, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Heehehehe LOL!! How dare you??? Don't you ever dare vandalise my talk page. Consider it a warning. I have to vandalise yours now: cjkjhkhjdhgdfj. Draw. ShahidTalk2me 17:04, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: My Disapproval

Thank you for your comments, I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I agree that my condescending comments were somewhat out of line and I apologize. It's just that lazy and carelessly written English annoys me, and some days I'm just not in a tolerating mood. I only counted 5 of my last 50 edits to be "mocking" and maybe two or three in the previous 200 edits. I'll try to keep my disapproval out of my edit summaries in the future. -Jaardon (talk) 17:30, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Jóannes Patursson

Hi there. And thanks for the hint about the translation project. Actually I've been active there before, creating some articles on demand or proofreading other people's work. Might well be the time to resume work there :) De728631 (talk) 19:06, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello

I noticed that you were creating many articles about certain animal species. If you are interested I have a script that can automatically create multiple pages with similar content. LetsdrinkTea 21:10, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

I can do that sort of thing with AWB, too, if you'd like. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:20, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

That'd be cool there are zillions of articles that needed to be started. Dr. Blofeld White cat 21:22, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Oop, sorry. Anyhow, I'm off...if I get home at a decent hour tonight I'll AWB fix it, and maybe AWB some new ones; just tell me which to do. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:43, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry - the hour isn't decent. Can it wait 'til tomorrow, do you think? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 04:18, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Further thought - to save you trouble, I can AWB the rest of the articles on those lists. It might be easier, it would save time, and it would free you up to do more translation-related stuff, if you'd like. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 05:47, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
OK - I'll get on it tonight. See what kind of headway I can make. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:41, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Excellent, good to see.

I got as far as "C" on the moths last night, and filled in some of the smaller letters as well. I have, however, hideously overslept, which means it'll be a while before I get to it again today. Sorry about that. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:19, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Well...it's just that I'm ashamed of sleeping as long as I did; there's no excuse for it. I should have been up at least an hour earlier. Thanks for the compliment. :-)
Hrm...OK; I'm about midway between the Bureau of Engraving and Printing Annex and the Maine Avenue Fish Market (which is under an overpass, but which is still about a five-minutes' walk from the office). I can actually see the Central Heating Plant from my office's kitchen window, but that doesn't have an article. As yet - give it time...
Anyhow, I'm off to hopefully complete those moths today. Then, we'll see; with luck I'll have the time to complete their talk pages as well. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:52, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
The first of those. There's actually a picture of the neighborhood I took in the article on Southwest Federal Center; I need to go back and redo it in better light sometime. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:08, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Not quite - I'll e-mail you. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:11, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps in a bit - soon as I'm done with these it'll be time for dinner. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:32, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words. I really don't mind the comments I've been getting, especially because I can understand that a bunch of new articles like I've been creating does tend to screw up newpage patrol a bit. Anyhow...yes, AWB makes things go nice and quickly, so with luck I should have the rest of the articles finished by this evening. Then we'll see if I can get some talk pages started.
Sorry to hear about the virus - I hope you can purge it soon. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:32, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Maybe you should take a little time off away from it, let the issues work themselves out. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:23, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, we all need a wikibreak now and again. Goodness knows working on this project can be a daunting task. Anyhow, I hope to have those moths finished by the end of the day today. Talk pages, we'll see; I don't know how far with those I'll be able to get. Any other lists of moths you want me to look at? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:32, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps that's what I'll do, thenk. Thanks, take care. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:36, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure

Sorry, I didn't see that, thanks!

Re: Infobox Germany design

I've made some changes to Template:Infobox German location/sandbox; is that sort of what you had in mind? Kirill [pf] 02:56, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

I've changed the CoA size and added the map label, but I'm not sure what's generating the extra space between the CoA and its caption. Kirill [pf] 03:20, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Infobox Germany

Hi the proposal is almost done at User:Dr. Blofeld/Germany using Template:Infobox German location/sandbox. Just need to shrink the COA to around 80px and get the map to display the title like with France. What do you think? Let me know on the template talk page thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:01, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Seems fine to me, good work! Stifle (talk) 11:56, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Hi Stifle! The box has been drawn up at Template:Infobox German location/sandbox. Let me know when you can update the actual template Template:Infobox German location. We even have a nice anenetated place name on the map now! You are an admin right? Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:42, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
I've posted a message at the template talk page saying that I am considering replacing it. If there are no objections in the next few days, I will do so. Stifle (talk) 10:06, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the appropriate stub. I, however, am not sure about the "notability" tag. --Docku: What's up? 17:10, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Image

Hey no I removed this image which is a copyvio. ShahidTalk2me 11:20, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

I was sure the guy replaced the image. I reverted him and I thought the free image was now there. But as I see now, the guy who reverted him before me (whose revision I reverted the article to), did not make a revert. He just removed the copyvio and left the article without an image.
