Sir Spencer Thomas Pitre I (22 February 1597 – 28 June 1662) was an English landowner and a soldier in the English Civil War. Being my 13th great-grandfather in my male-line, he was the elder surviving son of Ulrich John Pitre (25 March 1569 − 2 January 1624; née Ulrik Hans Patrise) by his wife Hannah Thomas (12 April 1573 − 16 February 1641). He was also extremely tall for his era, being nearly 6' 8 (203.2 centimetres) tall.

Out of Spencer's 14 siblings, 12 died before reaching the age of 10, one died at age 23, and his only living sibling by 1631 was his younger sister, Elizabeth. Spencer and Elizabeth were reported to have an extremely strong bond, them and their younger brother Algernon (1607 − 1631) being the only surviving children of 15 children of their parents. Spencer and his younger siblings were born and raised in Somerset, an area in southwestern England. Not much is known about Spencer's adolescent days in his life, although he reportedly saved his cousin's life during a visit at his uncle's estate.

Marriage

At or around 1617, Spencer met his future wife Margaret Thorne (16 June 1600 − 27 November 1637) for the first time. Margaret was very open about what she felt when she first saw Spencer, saying he was "the most gorgeous looking man ever" and "he made my heart melt". They were engaged by late 1617 and married in London around late October the next year. Soon after they married, they consummated the marriage and their eldest son and child, Jasper, was born in July of 1619. Spencer and Margaret had a happy marriage and regularly went to the theatre to watch plays. Their next child and eldest daughter, Elizabeth Hannah, who was named after her paternal aunt, was born on 3 August of 1620. However, she died in childhood, as did five other children. Only two sons survived; Jasper Henry Pitre (1619−1671) and Ulrich Edward Pitre I (1624−1661). Despite the loss of most of their children, Margaret and Spencer had a happy marriage up until the very end. Shortly after the betrothal of her son Jasper to Mary Clyde, Margaret died at age 37 from smallpox, devastating her husband and her two sons. Spencer made a promise to Margaret that he'll never marry another woman after she died, which stayed the case until Spencer's death in 1662.

Later years and death (1640-1662)

In between the years 1633-1642, Spencer served in the Army of England, and later the Royalist army. However, just before the English Civil War started, he was knighted by Charles I of England. During this time, his first two grandchildren were born, twin boys named Spencer Thomas Pitre II (1643 − 1652) & Thomas Frederick Pitre (1643 − 1708).

On 15 July 1652, Spencer was sentenced to death by hanging, after plotting a plan to restore the British monarchy. However, he escaped to Virginia to escape the execution, where he spent the next eight years of his life.

In 1660, Spencer was allowed back into England, following The Restoration, which Charles II allowed him back to his homeland. Soon after, he learned that his sister contracted smallpox, a then deadly disease. She died on 2 December 1660, leaving Spencer devastated, since they were very close their whole lives.

By 1661, Spencer's health began to decline, which was drastically escalated by the death of his younger surviving son Ulrich on 31 December of that year. His health furtherly deteriorated in the beginning of 1662. By the beginning of May, his health reach a point so low, his son Jasper had to stay there with him, and by June 1662, he was mostly bedridden. Spencer died later that month, on 28 June 1662 of arteriosclerosis, at the age of 65. All of his land was inherited by his sole living child, Jasper.

Elizabeth Hannah Pitre (1601-1660)

Elizabeth Hannah de la Louvre-Noale (nee Pitre; 15 November 1601 − 2 December 1660) was an English art collector who was the younger sister of Sir Spencer Pitre (1597−1662).

Elizabeth was born in 1601 to Ulrich John Pitre by his wife Hannah Thomas. She recieved her first name from Elizabeth I of England, and the other one was Hannah, after her mother.

Elizabeth had a very close bond with her older brother Spencer, to the point that she initially didn't want to have children, and live closer to him. However, Spencer ecouraged her to marry a man, telling her that "Dad will be proud". Elizabeth decided to marry after all, falling in love with a guy named Issac Percy (5 May 1598 − 11 January 1672), a very distant male-line relative of the Percy Earls of Northumberland. However, her father Ulrich was already arranging a marriage between his daughter and a French landowner, Henri de la Louvre-Noale (9 December 1599 − 12 August 1658), the heir to his father, Étienne (1566 − 1628) lands.

  • Charles Émile (14 May 1628 − 12 September 1637) died aged 9 from smallpox.
  • Anne-Marie (26 August 1631 − c. 1700) married in 1654 to Albert de Brun, had issue.

  • miscarried daughter (1637)
  • miscarried daughter (1638)
  • miscarried daughter (1640)

Both of their sons and one of their daughters died before reaching 20 years of age. Euwiaidj is descended from the marriage through their eldest daughter, Élisabeth.

Jasper Henry Pitre (1619-1671)

Jasper Henry Pitre (1 July 1619 − 26 November 1671) was an English landowner. His only surviving sibling was Ulrich Edward Pitre Sr. (12 February 1624 − 31 December 1661).
