Overview

Philadelphia transplants, also known as hipsters, transplants, trannys etc. Commonly a suburbanite youngster who travels from a suburban community to live in the Northern Liberties or Fishtown section of Philadelphia, PA. Often financially backed via weekly stipends from their parents (who still reside in suburban communities), the Philadelphia transplant is considered to be a financial burden upon the city of Philadelphia by many. "grifter-types" and thier lifestyle have been frowned on since the beginning of human settlement.

Lifestyle

Philadelphia transplants generally do not work; if they do work they usually hold menial part-time jobs as resturant servers, bartenders, record store clerks, and manual laborers. They are generally drawn to low paying/low responsibility jobs due to the fact that they migrate to Philadelphia for an 'adventurous lifestyle'. Commonly they will reside in gentrified sections of the city. For their own personal safety they usually hang out in groups of three or more called 'packs'. When they are alone they travel on vintage bicycles. The vintage bicycle allows them to escape situations they consider to be dangerous.

Dress & Culture

Dress is generally confined to vintage, or thrift shop clothing. Usually this clothing is tight. Hair is usually unkempt and scruffy for both males and females. Common to the Philadelphia transplant is a satchel type bag, that is almost always carried. This bag is carried by both males and females and resembles the common American female purse or pocketbook. Transplants also wear large pseudo-fashonable sunglasses. Some transplants may wear a baseball cap that is netted in the back similar in style to what modern day hipsters wear.

Diet and Drink

Food diet varies the most among transplants ranging from American food such as pizza and hamburgers to trendy Mediterranean food such as falafel balls and hummus to a strictly vegetarian or vegan diet. Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) is far and away the beer of choice. This is a bit of a stereotype, however, given PBR's known connection to rock/punk/hipster and local live music scenes. For liquor, Jim Beam whiskey is a popular choice.

Public Opinion / Impact

Many will disagree on whether or not Philadelphia transplants are good or bad for the City of Brotherly Love. Many of these newcomers experience discrimination similar to racism. In choosing such a lifestyle, they are commonly vulnerable to being exploited for their cheap -- sometimes free labor. Unlike past Philadelphian immigrant groups, transplants do not migrate for money but for a particular lifestyle. Some are taken care of financially by their parents in the suburbs.
