The 1988 Maldivian coup d'état attempt[d] was a failed attempt to overthrow the government of president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on 3 November 1988. Led by a group of Maldivians and assisted by armed mercenaries of a Tamil secessionist organization from Sri Lanka, the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam, the coup was thwarted with assistance from India during Operation Cactus.
