I am Gloria Stuart's daughter. Her only child. I have long wanted to edit my mother's Wikipedia entry. It has been filled with errors and--as has been commented elsewhere--is not only skimpy but out of balance. I realize that when I cite "SVT" as a source, no published record backs up the statement, it is only my testimony. But I was exceedingly close to my mother and knew her intimately. With the exception of when my husband and I lived abroad in 1959, wherever I was, my mother and I talked on the phone every day. After my husband died in 2001, I lived close to my mother and saw her every day. Then mid-2003, I went east but returned to Los Angeles in September, 2004. I lived with my mother for awhile, then moved three blocks away and walked over to see her every afternoon. We had dinner together many times a week and shared friends--I was always included at her dinner parties. In 2010, wanting to concentrate on my work, from February till early September I lived 1-1/2 hours away in Ojai, but again we talked every day and saw one another every couple of weeks. I came home to be with her the last two weeks of her life. In addition to being the person extant who knows the most about Gloria Stuart, I feel I am qualified to write about her because I have been a professional writer for more than fifty years. I have published eight books, countless magazine articles, had a syndicated column in four newspapers and have pieces included in a number of collections (and I was a contributor to the 1997 edition of "The Joy of Cooking"). I also acted as the in-house editor on my mother's autobiography, and have the co-author credit, although none of the writing is mine. As a matter of fact, I am working on a memoir about my mother and me as we speak. I now live in Santa Cruz, California. Please contact me with any questions or comments: sylviavthompson@gmail.com.
