England

  • Cumberland - no problem, historic county & former admin county
    • admin Cumberland did exclude Carlisle but not a problem. otherwise no notable border changes.
  • Westmorland - not a problem - historic county & former admin county
    • all these had identical borders
  • Rutland - not a problem - historic county, former admin county, former shire district, modern unitary district & ceremonial county
    • all these had identical borders
  • East Riding of Yorkshire - covers historic riding, former admin county modern council area and modern ceremonial county
    • historic riding and admin county should be treated in same article
    • council area and ceremonial county should be treated in same article
  • Herefordshire
    • whilst herefordshire was abolished and restored, the boundaries are identical so there is no need to split
  • Worcestershire
    • there may be a case for a separate article about the pre-1974 and historic Worcestershire. this needs examining. note though that Worcestershire remained a postal county after 1974, with the post-1998 borders, so splitting would probably be unintuitive.
  • Huntingdonshire
    • we have Huntingdonshire the historic and former administrative county, and also
    • Huntingdonshire district, which was briefly known as Huntingdon district
      • there might be a case for splitting an article Huntingdonshire (historic) off, about the former admin county & historic county. however, the differences between the pre-1965 boundary and the post-1974 district boundary are relatively small (Old Fletton) and this is probably not worthwhile
  • Cambridgeshire
    • this is very tricky
      • historic county of Cambridgeshire = former administrative county of Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely
      • former administrative county of Cambridgeshire (excluding Isle of Ely))
      • 1974 county of Cambridgeshire, ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire
      • 1974 Cambridgeshire excluding Peterborough

if we are to split Cambridgeshire it should be three ways

  • Middlesex
    • no case for splitting under principles
