Professor L. Gordon Flake is an internationally recognised specialist and an authority on the Indo-Pacific region. He is also the cousin of Republican Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ).[1]

He is considered a leading expert on International relations between Australia, the US and Asia.[2] He has previously served on the Board of the United States Committee of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (USCSCAP) and as Co-Vice Chair of the Board of the US Committee for Human Rights in North Korea. [3] His expertise in the Korean Peninsula and North East Asia has been called on in relation to a number of major international news events[4][5][6] including the imprisonment of Australian Alex Sigley in North Korea.[7]

Perth USAsia Centre

Professor Gordon Flake is the CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre, an international relations think tank, located at the University of Western Australia.[8]

Early Life

He received his BA degree in Korean with a minor in international relations from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.[9] He completed his MA at the David M. Kennedy Centre for International and Area Studies and speaks both fluent Korean and Laotian.[10]

Gordon Flake has served as Executive Director of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.[11] He was a Senior Fellow and Associate Director of the Program on Conflict Resolution at The Atlantic Council of the United States.[12] Prior to joining the Perth USAsia Centre as CEO, Gordon Flake served as Director for Research and Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute of America.[13]
