Managing a conflict of interest
Hello, JSDSJ. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Daniel Berrigan, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Hello! I notice that you claim to be the executor of Daniel Berrigan. This shows that you have conflict-of-interest with the person in the article, and according to Wikipedia guidelines you have to declare it. Can I give you assistance on how to declare your conflict of interest? The guidelines are WP:COI. Thank you! SunDawntalk 03:56, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

- Hi, I don't understand any of this. Yes, I am a priest and Dan's executor. All I'm trying to do is to add the website about Daniel Berrigan to Daniel Berrigan's wiki page. Is that a problem? I hope not. The website is: www.danielberrigan.org It should be fine, thank you for your consideration, all the best, John Dear JSDSJ (talk) 03:59, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- I have taken a look at John Dear and note that you claim to be him. While this is not a problem, according to Wikipedia guidelines you must declare on your userpage that you have a conflict-of-interest on both articles, on John Dear and on Daniel Berrigan. I can help you to declare it to comply with Wikipedia guideline, do you need help for that? I have also edited John Dear, please do not put links all over the article, unless it is used as an inline sourcing. Is this site the official site? Thank you! SunDawntalk 04:04, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Considering Daniel Berrigan, I have fixed the issue and it should display on his article that his official site is www.danielberrigan.org SunDawntalk 04:05, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding the dan b. website.
- Otherwise, being technically incompetent, I don't understnad what you want me to do, or what wiki needs me to do....
- It's strange having people write about me, and say false things about me on wiki, when I've published 40 books etc. But I don't know how to manage all this or what to do. I don't understand why I have a conflict of interest in updating my site, when so much stuff is outdated or wrong. I think my page is better now, and I would definitely update Daniel Berrigan's wiki page, but now you scare me from even trying to do it, even though I'm his literary executor and best friend!
- Thanks for any help you can give me, blessings of peace, John Dear JSDSJ (talk) 04:14, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Please do not be discouraged. I can help you declare your conflict-of-interest to comply with the guidelines, just say so. SunDawntalk 04:24, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. Ok, please help me.
- But you are saying you don't know who I am.... how do I know who you are?
- But ok, please help me comply with wiki guidelines, even though I don't understand, and don't know who you are.... thank you, John Dear JSDSJ (talk) 04:28, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- No problem. We don't need to know each other to help out each other. Please check this page where I have placed a declaration of COI from you on your userpage, if you want to change the text of I am John Dear and I am acting as the executor for Daniel Berrigan you can edit it or you can ask me. The purpose of this is to show that you may have a conflict of interest on both articles. While it is not generally encouraged to edit articles about yourself or about someone you know, you can still do it, providing that your edits are neutral, sourced, and follow Wikipedia principles. - Thank you. Where would that box go? Will it be a tiny box in the corner? Remember we are now talking about TWO wiki pages:
- If you add it on my page, you should remove the name Daniel Berrigan.
- If you add it on the page for Daniel Berrigan, maybe it could say, something like, "Updated by John Dear, the literary executor of Daniel Berrigan."
- Meanwhile I want to remove that awful photo of Dan Berrigan on his page, and put in a better one I took, and I've tried every which way and can't.
- Would also like to add a better picture of me for my page. Can you do that? I joined wiki commons, etc. but can't upload it.... JSDSJ (talk) 15:32, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Yes the box is enough, I already include both of pages right there. The notice would be on your user page, not on the articles. You can change the photo easily, especially if you take the picture by yourself. What is your issue during the upload? SunDawntalk 15:48, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- thank you. I don't know what the user page is. I can't find the box you've added to my wiki age...
- When I add the photo and upload it, and go to publish the page, the photo doesn't appear, but a little box with the caption, and when I click on it it says permission error.... There are tons of photos of me in google; all public domain, no big deal....
- Sorry for all these questions! JSDSJ (talk) 16:10, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- You can see you user page on this link. As for the images, Wikipedia rules on copyright is pretty strict, and I do not know much about it, but suffice to say that most pictures on Google are copyrighted and cannot be used, even though it may depicts you! The safest kind of picture is the one that you took by yourself. SunDawntalk 01:52, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- ok, Thank you very much! Now I understand! You've been a big help, all the best to you,

Per WP:COISELF, you should not edit John Dear if you are the subject of the article. Please read the instructions at this link. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:35, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
