LOW DISTORTION UNIT is a french industrial band / sound designers group from France created by Thierry Th Desseaux in 2001 during the making of the video game "alone in the dark : the new nightmare". LOW DISTORTION UNIT specialized for a long time in the realization of soundtracks. Its music and sound design have appeared in short-films and video games, such as "alone in the dark : the new nightmare" (2001), "cold fear" (2005)... LOW DISTORTION UNIT actually consists of Thierry Th Desseaux and Lucas_a (Lucas Albert). Sources MUSIC OF THE GAME ALONE IN THE DARK : THE NEW NIGHTMARE (43 tracks available on the band website) EDGE - February 2000 - England - (PS One / Dreamcast versions) Like all horror games, audio is a crucial role in Alone in the dark IV and the final stop on Edge's exploration of Darkworks is the music and sound effects department. Early versions of the soundtrack are somewhat surprising - despite the game's almost gothic milieu, it veers from the expected choral chants to industrial guitars redolent of Nine Inch Nails. The composers point to movies such as The Matrix, Scream, Nikita and Fight Club - all using non-symphonic backdrops to good effect. It's testament to the power of sound that where a monster mauling Edward in an out-of-context animation snippet merely provokes nods of admiration, the equivalent audio file has everyone recoiling in horror. All the samples are newly captured from the real world, wich the wide variety of locations in the game make especially difficult. Imagine recording enough samples for the hero's footsteps to cater for the wide variety of terrain. It must prove exhausting. JOYPAD - April 2000 - France - (PS One version) An extreme quality characterises the sound environment. "One of our goals was to create a totally original sound environment" says Thierry Desseaux (sound designer). Unusually, the sound staff didn't use any soundbank. With a DAT and two microphones, Thierry and Jean-Sébastien travelled to real locations with the same mood as used in the game. "It was a bit scary to find ourselves recording at moonlight in a cemetery, an old mortuary site or in a cave" confesses Thierry. The same technique has been used to simulate the weapons. Screams of different monsters were done through the mixing of real animal screams and human screams ! That part of the process took them six month to create all the in-game sound including something like 63 footsteps. You can't say that of Code Veronica ! Concerning the music, Thierry and Jean-Sébastien chose a renowned composer to add the sound track to the FMV and they kept the in-game tracks for their own. Our sound-designers opted for an industrial-gothic mix very oppressive, which recalls Nine Inch Nails. But again they avoided the easy-noisy-boring work (as in Silent Hill) in order to create the good mood in one hand, and in the other hand to keep players awake. It means that the music will be interactive. It will follow the actions of the hero toward the different locations in the game. Lastly, Thierry and Jean-Sébastien were inspired by movies like The Crow, Matrix, Seven, Fight Club… Seems to me that it could have been worse, doesn't it ! As you can feel all the elements have been put together in order to spook you in front of your screen. From the cracking of the lightning or the screaming of deadly creatures, you should have your TV set on high with the curtains closed for the ultimate spooky effect. GAME POWER AUSTRALIA - June 2001 - Australia - (PS One version) The game's audio is brilliant, the ambiance generated by the music is subtle, yet effective. Sound : 8.5 / 10 PS2 FANTASY - February 2002 - USA - (Playstation 2 version) Sounds are surely the best feature of Alone in the dark : the new nightmare. Sounds effects are varied, scary and are a strong support to the weak graphics of the game. From mysterious whispers to sinister groans, the developers created an excellent scary background for the adventure. There are good orchestral themes that fit nicely the atmosphere of the game. The Dumb Monkey the dumb Monkey is an established testing process by which a randomized program "walks" through a path of a program. The dumb monkey randomly traverses a path in the program. After a long time the monkey will "walk" through all possible paths of the program. The benefit of the "dumb" monkey is that it illustrates all possible paths through a program. This can be useful in programs that have complex paths. Monkey Labor The term "monkey labor" refers to testing hours that are completed through simple automation. The term comes from the slang term Code Monkey (which is the person who typically creates the Dumb Monkey). The term monkey labor is used as a joke, it is in fact a positive effect of automated test processes. Monkey Cloud A monkey cloud is a cloud of testing "monkeys" these "monkeys" are then used to test programs across a distributed computing network. He was one of the more notorious brigands of his time raiding the coast of southern Canada and western England for over three years before his capture by Sir John Eliot in 1623. His arrest and conviction caused a scandal in the English court, Nutt having paid Eliot ₤500 pounds in exchange for a pardon, and was eventually released by the Secretary of State George Calvert. Biography Born in Lympstone, England, John Nutt arrived in Newfoundland as a gunner on a Dartmouth ship around 1620. He decided to settle in the area permenantly and moved his family to live in Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador. He soon organized a small crew with whom he siezed a small French fishing boat as well as two other French ships (another account claims the ships were English and Flemmish) during the summer of 1621 before returning to the western coast of England. He would continue using unemployed sailors, patricularly those conscripted to press gangs, and actually lured away a significant number away from the Royal Navy paying regular wages and commissions. He would also offer his services to protect French and English settlements including the Colony of Avalon then under the leadership of George Calvert. He would continue raiding shipping both in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Irish Sea for over three years, often avoiding attempts to apprehend him, before he requested a royal pardon from John Eliot, the Vice Admiral of Devon. Eliot agreed in exchange for a ₤500 pound bond, however he was arrested by Eliot and imprisoned once back in England. Tried and convicted for piracy, Nutt was about to be hanged when George Calvert, then Secretary of State, intervened on his behalf having been a friend and associate of his while Nutt and his family were living in the Avalon Colony. Nutt was given his pardon and also granted ₤100 pounds in compensation while Eliot, for his betrayal, was charged with malfeasance in office and imprisoned. Toni Llamaboots, originally from the country of the Dutch, was a world renown jungle ball player. He was the only recorded player to ever have a 7 bagger. Having only a leg to swing his bat with he would spin it quickly around his massive foot and hit double breaking balls off of Satchel Page. When playing defense Toni was forced to throw the ball with his foot that he used for all other daily activities as he had no hands or arms. When playing with the Aztecs he discovered that a tree was necessary to throw behind as the natives were quite fond of trying to hit Toni. Overview Guardia Lamblia is a disease linked to a single-celled intestinal parasite, generally contracted through the drinking of river or well-water that is contaminated by animal droppings. In early stages, it can cause gas. Untreated, it can cause severe diarrhea or malabsorption of nutrients. These can lead to dehydration or starvation deaths in extreme cases. One popular rumor has it that actress Heather O'Rourke who played the young girl from Poltergeist died from Guardia Lamblia. This is not the case. Actually, she died from the toxicity released by a bowel obstruction caused by another kind of intestinal ailment called Crohn's Disease. Chill is recognized as an undeniable and unstoppable pioneer in the Philippine’s music scene. Her resume and reputation speak for themselves, as well as, fully justify her crowning as the, “Queen of Filipino Hip Hop". Early on, Chill learned -first hand- about the frustrations and challenges of trying to attract attention from A&R reps and earn the respect of major record companies in Manila. She was constantly hammered with negative responses, mostly along the lines of, “There is no place for a female Filipina rapper in this industry.” Rather than be discouraged, Chill used this feedback to fuel her motivation. And if only to prove these critics wrong, she refused to give up and decided failure was not an option. While guesting on nearly every artist’s album and stage show, Chill also showcased her skills and proved that she was a talented artist in her own right. With all of this success, she established herself in the hip-hop scene as a player who could no longer be ignored. The same major labels who had shot her down, were now knocking on her door. Following negotiations with several labels, Chill decided to further her existing relationship with Sony and she signed on with them as an artist under the Sony umbrella. Once again the Sony partnership proved rewarding. Her albums dropped and sold in record breaking numbers. Career (1978 / 81) While working as an Hospital Orderly in the late 1970's, Nick was discovered playing by ex-Animal Chas Chandler, who sent him on a tour of Poland as support for Slade. Nick was only 18 when sent on the road. He recalls "I went with a kazoo and an acoustic guitar and opened for Slade in amphitheatres in front of 18,000 people. I went down as a storm and had the loudest kazoo in Europe, because Slade took their own PA on the road!" His career continued with tours supporting headliners like David Essex, Hot Chocolate and Alan Price... During that time, Nick released 3 solo singles between 1978/79 which none of them charted in the UK. Rock 'n' Roll Fool b/w Ounce Of Sense All Or Nothing b/w Hold On To Your Heart I Only Want To Be Number One b/w Dicing All were issued by Barn records and are pretty hard to find these days. The Drivers (1981 / 83) However there was always the desire for his own band. he formed The Drivers with friends Mac Norman & Steve Boorer. The Drivers seemed for a while to be that band, and in the early eighties, they signed with a record label in Canada. Things were looking good for The Drivers as they had a couple of hits in Canada (Tears On Your Anorak, Talk All Night), an album (Short Cuts) and were very popular on tour in Canada & the UK (Despite not getting a UK Deal). So much so that they had a support band of their own, Fast Forward who's line up included guitarist Kevin MacMichael. Nick was so impressed with Kevin's guitar playing that he asked him to form a new band with him however he could not commit at that time due to being in his current band. After a final single release with The Drivers (Things, a Bobby Darin cover version), The Drivers split in 1983. Cutting Crew (1985 / 1992) A twist of fate would strike as Kevin Macmichael while with Fast Forward were involved in an auto accident which left all of the members except Kevin MacMichael unable to continue touring. Ready to begin working together, Kevin moved to London with Nick as their home base, Van Eede and Macmichael gave themselves one year to sign a recording contract, and recruited drummer Martin "Frosty" Beedle, previously a member of the cabaret band on the QE2, and bass player Colin Farley, a session musician living in Spain. Van Eede came up with the band's name after reading an article in the British rock publication Sounds, which described the band Queen as a "cutting crew," which means when the band didn't gig & instead stayed in the studio recording new songs. In 1985, Cutting Crew staged a showcase at a London recording studio for representatives from numerous labels, and won a contract with Siren Records, part of Virgin Records. The first single to be released by the band was (I Just) Died In Your Arms b/w For The Longest Time released in the UK in August 1986. After an apperance on Top Of The Pops & the song being regularly played on the radio & music video shown on TV, the single shot up to number 4 in the UK charts (Number 1 in most other European Countries). This would be their biggest hit single. Nick came up with the title and concept for "(I Just) Died In Your Arms" after making love with his (at the time)girlfriend. "I actually remember saying that," he admitted, and promptly jotted a note on a pad he always kept close at hand. The next single, I've Been In Love Before b/w Life In A Dangerous Time failed to break into the Top 75 in the UK on it's first release in November 1986 but was quickly released again to reach 50 in the charts. This was manly down to the fact that radio stations were not playing the song. The album Broadcast was released shortly after which reached 41 in the UK Album charts. After successful touring across Europe, the band were ready for new success. Virgin Records decided to release (I Just) Died In Your Arms in America under the Virgin Records label instead of Siren Records. (I Just) Died In Your Arms" became Virgin's first Number 1 single in America; it reached the top spot on 2 May 1987, and remained there for two weeks. This now meant that the song went to Number 1 in 19 Countries. One For The Mockingbird b/w Mirror & A Blade was the next single released from Broadcast which reached Number 52 in the UK & Number 38 in America. The music video for the song caused controversy as due to it's very fast flashing images which could cause epilepsy, MTV USA would not show the video till after 10PM. I've Been In Love Before was finally re-released again for a third time in the UK which finally peaked at Number 24 & in America where it reached an impressive Number 9 & stayed in the charts for 3 months. The final single to be released from Broadcast was Any Colour b/w Fear Of Falling which failed to set the chart alight reaching Number 83 in the UK Charts. Also in 1987, Cutting Crew were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Newcomer which they lost to Jodi Whatley. Two of their songs were used in movies, One For The Mocking-Bird (Can't Buy Me Love) & Life In A Dangerous Time (White Water Summer). After being delayed by their record label to release their next album, The Scattering was finally released in 1989 where it reached a disapointing 150 in the US Album charts. This was manly down to Virgin's lack of promotion for the band due to the album not having "Any AOR hits". The band released the first single from the album, (Between A) Rock & A Hard Place b/w Card House (Number 66, UK & Number 77, US) which the band wrote & made fun about the record company due to their disappointment in the way they were treated. 2 more singles were released from the album, The Scattering b/w Christians (Number 96, UK) & Everything But My Pride b/w Contact High (Number 4, US AOR Chart). At this point in time, the band were most successful in America & Germany & not the UK. After the release of The Scattering album, Colin Farley & Martin Beedle left the group which left Nick & Kevin as a duo. The final album to be released by Virgin was Compus Mentus, which was released in 1992. One single was released from it, If That's The Way You Want It b/w Been In Luv 92, which failed to chart. The album & single were released the day that EMI brought Virgin & the album was only available roughly for a week in the UK & many other countries. Because of this, Nick & Kevin decided to call it a day with Cutting Crew. Genesis Audition (1996) During the time after Cutting Crew ended, Nick went on to write & produce for other artists including the original demo of Cher's monster hit Believe. In 1996, he auditioned for the job as the new lead singer of progessive rock band Genesis. After Phil Collins departure, Nick auditioned along with numeous other vocalists. After impressing both Tony Banks & Mike Rutherford in earlier auditions, it came down to the last two vocalists. One was Nick Van Eede & the other was former Stiltskin singer Ray Wilson. Eventually the job went to Ray Wilson. The Return Of Cutting Crew (2005) In 2002, Kevin MacMichael died of cancer. Three years later, Nick writes & records a new album originally titled Capture by Grinning Souls but later re-issued as Grinning Souls by Cutting Crew. He also appears on ITV show Hit Me Baby One More Time in which he performed (I Just) Died In Your Arms & a cover of Macy Gray's hit I Try. He then embarked on tour with his new lineup, Gareth Moulton on Guitar, Sam Flynn on Keyboards, Dominic Finley on Bass & Tom Arnold on Drums. They have toured in the UK (which included the successful Here & Now 2008 Tour), Germany, Trinidad & will be touring in America in the next few months. Other Information (I Just) Died In Your Arms has been used in lots of thing in the last 10 years. The films Never Been Kissed & Hot Rod The video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City & elements of the song were used by Mika in the song Relax, Take It Easy. The NSPCC will be using Cutting Crew's new song Mother's Little Angel in future advertisments.
