Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Expert attention

Maps for the world

Sain uu? Some of you may already know this, but it was a new discovery for me: Maps for the world gives interactive access to various scanned maps. Among others, there are Russian army maps, where the 1:100k scale (1cm = 1km) covers almost all of Mongolia. I've found it extremely useful to verify the path of rivers and other geographic features. Names are sometimes given in Mongolian and sometimes in Russian, so it's probably not a reliable source for spellings, but it's a perfect source for geo-coordinates. I don't expect the material there to be public domain though, so we can't just copy the maps, just refer to them. (Actually, they might even be PD as government works, but that would need careful verification.) --Latebird (talk) 16:11, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Hello,
Please note that History of Mongolia, which is within this project's scope, has been selected as one of Today's articles for improvement. The article was scheduled to appear on Wikipedia's Community portal in the "Today's articles for improvement" section for one week, beginning today. Everyone is encouraged to collaborate to improve the article. Thanks, and happy editing!

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Solve the problems

As revealed by comments of G Purevdorj et al in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject_Mongols/Members and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject_Mongols/Archive_2#There_is_a_problem, there currently still exist problems within this project (or its relationship with its predecessor, the Mongolia work group). Since the renaming action was done in the middle of the discussion and the renaming itself was never really agreed by its former members by a fair vote or so, shall we revert to the original title and continue the discussion? I would not revert the WikiProject by myself however because there are already newcomers who join this project after the renaming action. As the leader of the Mongolia work group, I would expect G Purevdorj to lead the discussion and the vote. --Evecurid (talk) 22:09, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Given my currently overall very low activity on Wikipedia (which is not bound to change), I don't feel any immediate need to restart this discussion now. If there was a circle of people who worked on Greater Mongolia or Mongols (at any rate not just the Mongolian state), I would still be glad to be part of it. But unless such a group comes into existence and starts working together irrespective of the precise letter of the constitution of this group, there's no point in refining the project description. I haven't seen anything akin to what might have existed around 2007 yet. G Purevdorj (talk) 05:21, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

Massive deletion of useful contents

Chinese User:Ogress deleting huge amount of useful contents and replacing with trash. This is old version of Rouran. The Rouran was a khaganate, not khanate. This is time to shutting down this shameful site!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.160.3.227 (talk) 13:58, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Its governance is a khanate; there's no difference between the two except that one is a redirect. Unreliable sources and a terrible lede needed simplification to make it legible. The "Mongolian reconstruction" had a completely tail-chasing cite that didn't appear to exist and appears to be obvious nationalistic OR. Everything else you complain about is me removing Wall of Blue, fixing wikilinks and grammar, and changing a not very good chart into a useful list. Ogress smash! 21:36, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Judging from the previous involvement of Ancientsteppe sockpuppets, this IP is most likely Ancientsteppe logged out. Blanket reverts[1] + accusations of vandalism directed at editors[2] + outright lies concerning the actions of other editors[3] + canvassing other editors in a language other than English[4][5] + use of multiple IPs to hide their actions[6][7][8][9] + uploading pictures added by Khiruge(sockpuppet of Ancientsteppe[10])[11][12] = Ancientsteppe modus operandi. --Kansas Bear (talk) 22:37, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
He's canvassing in Mongolian and he mentions User:Cartakes. (Oh, and me.) I can't read much else. Ogress smash! 23:59, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
I think he is definitely a sockpuppet. For example, he (just like User:Ancientsteppe) claimed ALL groups of peoples before Genghis Khan, including the Xiongnu, Xianbei, Rouran, Khitans etc were Mongols or Mongolic peoples. What he wrote really made little sense (for instance, he claimed "outsiders" are destroying pages and urged to revert them). User:Ancientsteppe was already confirmed to operate over 50 different Wiki accounts and was thus blocked, what the IPs are doing now is indeed Ancientsteppe modus operandi as mentioned above. --Cartakes (talk) 00:29, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

absurd article

This non-academic article needs to deletion. Wikipedia is not proganda tool. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.72.192.145 (talk) 12:36, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

As with the above section named "#Massive deletion of useful contents", I believe this IP must be a sockpuppet. He is simply trying to label other users in a non-Wiki way, such as labeling others as "Chinese" in Talk:Rouran Khaganate#Chinese User:Ogress vandalised the article. As for the article itself, I already reasoned it in its talk page, but this IP seems to never listen. --Cartakes (talk) 12:57, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

This article is example how china /and some people/ falsifying other's history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.72.192.145 (talk) 13:01, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

This IP never listened to other's comment even though I did explained in its talk page. He basically considers the whole Mongol Empire/Yuan dynasty to be "Mongolia", which I have found to not be supported by academic sources. For example, according to the book "Mongolian Nomadic Society: A Reconstruction of the 'Medieval' History of Mongolia" by Bat-Ochir Bold, p91, "Mongolia was one of the 12 provinces (including the central province) of the Yuan dynasty. Just like other provinces, Mongolia was governed from the provincial chancellery (hsing zhongshusheng), which was located in Kara-Korum". --Cartakes (talk) 13:11, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Reasons for the 1242 withdrawal from Hungary

I notice that just about every Mongol-related page, from "Batu Khan" to "Mongol invasion of Europe", blames the withdrawal of Mongol forces from central Europe on the death of Ogedei Khan. He died in December of 1241; the Mongols withdrew from Hungary in March of 1242. Supposedly, Batu had to evacuate from central Europe to participate in the kurultai that had just been called. A lot of historians go with this explanation as well. However, I contend that this explanation doesn't actually fit with the established evidence. An in-depth analysis as to why can be found in the thesis "Deep Ditches and Well-built Walls:", by Lindsay Stephen Pow, from the UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY, on pages 12 to 24. She uses a lot of in-line citations, particularly Rashid al-Din's Successors. But, to sum it up:

  • The only primary source that credits the kurultai as the reason for their withdrawal is Carpini, an outside observer who is proven wrong on several other details of that event (e.g. the assertion that Ogedei was poisoned).
  • Rashid Al-Din, who actually had inside Mongol sources and was working for the Mongols (as a high level minister, no less), states that they didn't even know about Ogedei's death when they started their withdrawal.
  • The official Mongol history, the Yuanshi, states (in Subutai's bio) that the kurultai was called in 1243, not 1242.
  • Rashid and Rogerius both describe the Mongols as moving at a snail's pace rather than rushing back to Mongolia. They took a couple years to wander around their territory, hunt refugees, and put down some rebellions in the Caucasus. Similarly, neither of these chroniclers mention the Mongols talking about Ogedei's death.
  • Military operations continued in the west outside of Hungary. They invade Anatolia from 1241 to 1244. They put down rebels in southern Russia in late 1242. They invaded Syria in 1243. Et cetera. Campaigns were also launched against the Song in 1242 and 1245, again without a khan in charge of the empire. The idea that the Mongols needed to suspend an entire campaign (in this case, their supposed thrust into western Europe) when a new khan needed to be chosen isn't supported by what actually happened.
  • On top of the Mongol sources directly stating that they didn't withdraw because of Ogedei's death, the logistics involved support this idea. A courier would have to be dispatched immediately, and make the journey from Mongolia to western Hungary in just 3 months, in the middle of the winter, through the least developed parts of the Mongol Empire. William of Rubruck, in a Mongol party that changed horses 2 or 3 times a day and rode from day to night as fast as possible, took four months to reach Mongolia from Batu's camp on the Volga (i.e., much closer to Mongolia than western Hungary was). Carpini's party took 5 months to go from Kiev to Mongolia, as well. And they didn't travel in the middle of the winter.

I think the word of Rashid in particular is hard to dispute, especially since the only conflicting primary source is Carpini, who himself just has the word of one unnamed Mongol a few years after the withdrawal.--Nihlus1 (talk) 08:00, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Mongolia or WikiProject Asia / Mongolia

During my edits to or creation of other articles I have found that there currently in fact lacks a wiki project dedicated to Mongolia. When I created new articles related to Mongols and put talk headers in their talk pages, I have put the WikiProject Mongols banner many times in these talk pages, but when it is specific to Mongolia, I have noticed that there in fact lacks something. WikiProject Mongols is broad, which covers the Mongol-related topics from Asia to Europe (e.g. the vast Mongol Empire), instead of specifically either the Mongolian steppe or the modern state of Mongolia. So I think it would be a good idea to have a separate WikiProject Mongolia or WikiProject Asia / Mongolia to specifically cover Mongolia-related topics. The existing WikiProject Mongols will mostly be used to cover the Mongols as an ethnic group, which I think should probably fall under the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic groups. It will also cover historical Mongol-related topics such as various Mongol khanates like the Dzungar Khanate and Khoshut Khanate, but some topics such as the Mandarin Chinese may not necessarily be covered by WP Mongols, even though it is one of the official languages of Inner Mongolia. On the other hand, WikiProject Mongolia may fall under both WP Asia and WP Mongols, as Mongolia is a Mongol-majority country. Thanks for consideration. --Cartakes (talk) 16:27, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Guidance for a Draft Article: Gobi Corporation

Hi there! I am a Wikipedia beginner. Visited Mongolia a few times for business and leisure and got excited with the Mongolian culture and way of life. I started thinking how I could contribute to the Mongolian culture on Wikipedia and was reading the Wikipedia article on the Economy of Mongolia [[13]]. I noticed a mention of the Gobi Cashmere Company as being a major subject of the Mongolian Economy but found not such article on the Wikipedia. I decided this is a great way subject to cover and start my Wikipedia contribution. So I created this Draft article. As you will see I was first advised to add more links and citations, which I did, although I might still miss the standards of correct formatting Wikipedia articles. Then after I re-submitted the article draft, it was nominated for Speedy deletion without any discussion and shortly after deleted. So I decided to address the WikiProjectMongols in search of support to this article: Do you believe this is an important subject to cover and link it to the Economy of Mongolia? If you do so, can we collaborate so that I will edit the article (guidance appreciated) and the article will ultimately be published? Yudmik (talk) 18:28, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Mongolian wrestlers

Hi, I'm from Russian Wikipedia and I want to solve one problem.

There is Mongolian wrestler Chimedbazaryn Damdinsharav, he won the bronze medal in the men's Freestyle Flyweight at Olympic-1968. This name, for example: here. But in official report of Olympic-1968 he is named like Sukhbaatar, Surenjav, in data at unitedworldwrestling.com Suchebator, Surenjav. It seems like some mistake. Who is Sukhbaatar, Surenjav (Suchebator, Surenjav)? Why this error had been happened? Someone who has name S.Surenjav is noted in this article, but I do not understand what link is between Chimedbazaryn Damdinsharav with S.Surenjav. And something is here, maybe there is any explanation? I have tried Google-translator, maybe Suchebator, Surenjav was an eligible athlete, but Chimedbazaryn Damdinsharav substituted him?

But moreover! Identical problem is Tömöriin Artag, he won the bronze medal in the men's Freestyle Welterweight at Olympic-1968. At unitedworldwrestling.com there is Purev, Dagvasuren, alike in official report. More confusion: One Püreviin Dagvasüren is named as Mongolian judoka. Here is something about this problem.

Has someone any explanation to this?

Thank you beforehand --Шнапс (talk) 05:11, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:59, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Help with a Mongolia-related article

Hello guys. As explained also here I recently improved the article Yuan Dynasty by adding three reliable sources to compensate for a bsn template. The sources are reliable, otherwise I would not have used them to fulfill such template. One's publisher is the Social Sciences Literature Press, another's is Zhongzhou Ancient Books Publishing House. The third is from the People's Daily Publishing House, which in this case (assessment of a 14th-century stone bridge's construction) I would consider reliable too. So I can't understand why an User has claimed the sources are unreliable and undid my edit. I came here after trying to discuss it at the talk page 1 and then asking them to discuss the matter a second time 2. What should I do? Can someone look into the sources and intervene? Thanks--93.71.139.50 (talk) 12:11, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Mongol military tactics and organization

Help sought, from anyone who has access to texts in the extensive bibliography at Mongol military tactics and organization, to find sources which could verify material I've blanked from the article and justify its being restored. Thanks, Meticulo (talk) 08:53, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

See Mongolian name. Mongolian names are in a state of flux—different people follow different customs in the confusing post-1990 sociocultural context. As with everything else, we should go with what reliable sources say. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 13:23, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

Hello WikiProject Mongols:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Quality of Mongolian media sources

This maybe an odd ask, but would it be possible to gather a list of what are considered "reliable sources" for various Mongolian media outlets, that could be used by this bot [14]? This would help editors assess quality in various articles here. Oaktree b (talk) 23:57, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
